This is a little restaurant right on the water. It's a bit tucked away and down some stairs, so we had some trouble finding it. The menu was breakfast oriented, and we weren't sure we would all find something we liked. I tried the breakfast poutine, and it was GOOD. The serving was huge! I hardly made a dent in it before I was full. Very yummy. The service was a little slow, but this is a small establishment with a fair amount of tables. So please be patient. Eating at seahorses was like stepping into a little oasis. Time slowed, the weather on the deck was great, the Jack Johnson music made you feel like this is exactly what you should be doing in the moment. I highly suggest you try the poutine with pork added. This restaurant was situated underneath a bridge but overlooking the harbor on a very sunny day. We had the mermaid salad which had avocado, baby shrimp and a crab cake and we also had the pulled pork burger with fries. The food fulfilled our lunch need but the service was much less to be desired. The food was ok...nothing totally eye popping. The meal satisfied our hungry appetites for lunch, however, the food took over 45 minutes to prepare and have served to us. We filled up on so much water and soda that we were drowning in beverages. At some point, we had to ask if they still remembered our meal and they told us it was being prepared. I noticed that other customers only came for beer. I have more then a few food intolerances. They were kind when I asked about ingredients I needed to avoid and even inquired when they were not entirely sure. Everything was rave worthy! Their GF burger was one of the best I've had and topped with a yummy deep fried pickle! My husband thought the crab cakes were sublime and he thoroughly enjoyed the soup! There was no skimping on the crab. We are making thIs place our must stop when ever we come this way. This place is an absolute delight. I will warn you, my review may be biased given the lack of clouds in the sky and the amount of sunshine kissing my skin right now. I am also in the middle of a bike tour, so food and sitting down automatically become way more enjoyable :P I would definitely come back for two reasons. First, the location is prime! The view is unreal and now I am inspired to go kayaking. Second, the service is remarkable. They checked-in a couple times during my meal, and were very relaxed and friendly. The reason I did not give this place five stars is because I think the hollandaise sauce could have used a little lemon zest or something to lighten it a little bit. During covid times where we've only recently been venturing out to local restaurants, Seahorses cafe is a bright and welcoming establishment. We had the crispy 2 piece fish & chips which was satisfying with its freshness. Coleslaw was nice but bigger portion as it was well done would be nice. The best part- real ceramic plates not paper, well presented attractively, ketchup in a small cup and only the salt & pepper were individual. Good job! The supposed waterfront view is subpar...blocked by a bunch of moored vessels and a wooden ferry bridge. It took an hour to get the food to our table after ordering and the place was not at all packed. They must of used lived fish caught at the pier. This the the longest I ever waited for fried food. Bottom line is that if you are hungry or in a hurry and you don't want to suffer or waste your precious vacation time skip to other restaurants nearby. read more

We just pulled into Canada and, after a three hour trip on a ferry without any coffee or food, we needed to make a quick stop for both. We stopped by the water at the Seahorses Cafe. It is in a beautiful location. The outlook across the Sound is simply magnificent. Inside, the cafe is bright and airy and the lady who served us is very friendly, very happy, efficient and helpful. We ordered clam chowder, coffee and tea and the world's best carrot cake. It was a quick stop on the way to the hotel...but, after looking at the menu, we will probably go back tomorrow for breakfast. It's a good place with top tucker! PS. I hate to write negative reviews, but Mother's Day is supposed to be the day for a special outing. Somehow that concept was missed by the management of this establishment. We had reservations for a noon seating. Upon arrival were advised that our table was being prepared... and that the bill came to x-amount. How would you like to pay? Say what!? Oh, and how much would you like to tip? You've gotta be kidding! Off to a bad start. After we had settled in and decided to attack the ridiculously small 'buffet', before everyone else, there was no fresh food to be found. We were expected to clean up from the earlier crowd and what was left looked rather sad, stale, and quite unappetizing. The buffet consisted of: something ugly brown and chunky that was supposed to be potatoes (did not try them, they looked too disgusting), ham, sausage, pancakes, refried banana-bread (I kid you not), and eggs benedict, slightly off recipe with some sort of a mustardy sauce - edible, but not all that good, the whites still runny... 'Desert' was a variety of cut up cakes a la supermarket (definitely low quality store-bought stuff), some already dried out; and a fruit platter, also a la supermarket, served on a supermarket style plastic tray. Not enough serving utensils for the hot food, when there was food. So tongues with potato and sausage bits on them were sitting in the pancake tray. None of the desert food had serving utensils. People were helping themselves with their fingers. Yum! Other than the fruit, there were NO fresh options. A breakfast at Smitty's or Denny's would have been better, if you like that sort of thing. I don't. Certainly not for Mother's Day! Basically the average person could have whipped up something better and much nicer after a visit to Costco, even if you don't know how to cook. The only difference is, that for the price you would have had a much higher quality meal. This 'buffet experience' was just under $19 per person. If I could give zero stars, that would have been too much. I dare not try the food at any other time if they are so careless with their patrons on a day like that. Sad. On the good side, the location is nice, ambience is nice, staff is friendly. Perhaps enough for someone else to try them, prove me wrong, and write about a good experience. read more

We enjoyed lunch here prior to going paddleboarding out on the bay. We ordered the veggie burger with fries, mushroom soup, a house salad, wings, and clam chowder. All of the food came quickly, was hot and tasted good but the service was what made it stand out. The two servers that were working were friendly, attentive, and so polite. They made the experience so memorable. Then as we were leaving and walking to the parking lot we saw an older lady across the street fall and hurt herself. When I ran back to ask them for help they were right there getting ice and making sure she was ok. We will definitely come back next time we are in town! read more

The menu disappointed me, as i didn't know the cafe had changed hands. Gone is the creative and gourmet offerings, replaced by the usual family restaurant suspects of appetizers, salads, burgers, wraps and sandwiches. Boring. But the pricing was fair, and turned out, the food was good. The five of us all enjoyed our meals. My friends said the two-piece cod fish and chips ($16.95) was a hit. My veggie burger ($13.95) came loaded and yam fries were fresh and crisp served with a chipotle aioli ($1 substitute). There were no misses, and the service was good. It's ALL about the secret sauce with these people (no - not talking about the wine list) ... from the loopy calamari to the Thai-style potato chip salad (no joke), this place had me at the dress and dip. The good folks at Seahorses are doing Thai menu nights from now on, but that's not the only treat in store. I had a heavenly home-made hedgehog the other day - huge, served warm and tender ... like a hazelnut pillow, with vanilla ice cream half-melted by the cozy heat it was putting off. I barely had a chance to sip my Earl Grey along with it, so distracted was I by the texture and flavour of this pillowy goodness, but I regretted nothing as I ran for the last ferry licking ice cream from my nose! And speaking of the beverages enjoyed fleetingly: today's indulgence (I commute on the Brentwood Bay ferry, so I'm frequently stranded at their doorstep, appetite in hand) came with a glass of obsession. A wine called Obsession, that is. As if I needed more. It was a little on the full of fruit n' candy side for my taste, but still ... such a happy wine, I couldn't help smiling as I quaffed it down.
