We came in from out of town to celebrate my cousin's graduation. A total of three tables were occupied. My aunt called on two separate occasions to make reservations for our larger group. We walked in on the night of my cousin's graduation to celebrate a huge milestone. We walked in and the hostess stated she didn't have our reservation, another lady who was either the owner or manager came up hot and bothered and was EXTREMELY rude. On a hospitality level I give her a -50. She very rudely stated she didn't have our reservation and continued to be awful as we tried to clarify that we had made a reservation. Even if she could have been nice and apologetic about the reservation misunderstanding, I wouldn't have stayed to eat here and support this business. People need to learn how to treat other humans nicely. This lady was NOT nice, one of the rudest restaurant encounters I've ever had. read more

I'm a bit mixed on this place... Food... Great... Service great.... But ate here on a Saturday night and there were only two tables... Each with two people there... Place was virtually empty. I was hungry for prime rib... Looked at the menu and wow... $67!!...and that's just for the entee! ... All sides are extra!.. You have to pay extra for the sides and drink! If someone were to ask me to invent a restaurant I would want in North Missouri, the answer is basically Sebree's. It is a daydream come true (wistful, but more grounded in reality). And Sebree's manages to be better than I could have imagined. Sebree's is the embodiment of what I hope restaurants in this part of the world can be. We have so much to offer, it's a matter of bringing it all together. And they do that so well. They have admirably prioritized relationships with area farmers, showcasing local producers. Where they do go outside the immediate region (seafood), they make a point of keeping the same sort of relationships with small-scale, sustainable producers in those communities. In our visit, the menu was very local - both in content and design. Consisted solely of recognizable dishes folks grew up with here - surf and turf, pasta, bread pudding, there were few surprises. And that's where the surprise was: the execution is on an astounding level. I have seen variations on that menu in so many other places throughout Missouri and beyond. The dish names are the same, but none of them produce like this. So think homestyle food, except in your house you have someone from Greentop who went out and cooked under French and German chefs, then came back for family. Normal stuff. Even something as basic as the bread was excellent, and the honey butter they whipped up for it was ideal. The steak was the best we'd ever had in the area. And the bread pudding was outstanding - I'm still thinking about that caramel. They are passionate about food here and it shows - curious and inventive, evolving the menu throughout the seasons based on what's available. An example of this is their blackberry sorbet. It's lovely. Cindy, the front-of-house side of the wonderful duo who own and operate this place, explained "We ended up with a fantastic crop of blackberries in our garden this year, so I've been figuring out what to do with them ever since. We froze a bunch and I decided to try making a sorbet. So I learned." Fantastic. I love that attitude, and they have the standards and abilities to make special things happen. They pay attention to the quality of details, and it shows. Even the music - the played vintage Uncle Tupelo all through our time there, it was the perfect choice. Maybe that's the metaphor: That combination of heritage and modern craft. Is it perfect? No, of course not. It's very human and honest, and I love that about it. It's making things and tinkering and innovating, and that's much more interesting than the same polished menu with little variation. The citrus slaw was good, but for us it would have worked better as a component in a larger dish - which I think is how it started. The wine list fit in with what's generally available in the region, but it's also an opportunity to raise the level a notch above what you can get at Hy-Vee. Maybe the traffic through the restaurant isn't enough for it, which would totally make sense. Generally speaking, the drink program is fine but doesn't match the level of the food. There is a decent enough looking bar, but they may have been short staffed and this all could be remedied by the time you're reading this. The atmosphere was one of transition, while still good. It and the menu graphic design are sneaky - they don't fully communicate the excellence coming from the kitchen. All of it is completely understandable, and I also would love to see this place playing to its heights. None of these are big deals. We felt comfortable and welcome, and the night was a great time. This place is a conversation with the local community. It makes so much sense. I would love to see that culinary conversation expand to include some of the additional flavors and traditions we have here - Salvadorean pupusas would be a perfect combination with that citrus slaw. It would be fun to see one dish on the menu that steps into more inventive and educational territory - but we've only been once, so they may already be doing that and we just missed it this time. If possible, make reservations - they have a small team, so it's wise to give them a heads up that you're heading their way, right after we got there a table of 12 showed up and I gained an appreciation for Cindy's role as host/air traffic controller. Let's wrap this up: Kirksville is a place that is 3 hours away from the nearest airport, and even though it's just 17,000 people, it's the largest town for a wide radius. It is also a place where you can go from preschool to doctor without leaving the city limits. That's what I love about this area - when people only focus on the limitations, they don't see *us*. And this is what they miss. Sebree's gave me a great meal, but it also feeds a sense of pride and possibility in where we are and who we can be. Maybe that's lofty to say about a surf and turf platter with a house salad, but I defy anyone to come here and walk away with anything but respect. read more

What an unexpected surprise. This place is in the absolute middle of nowhere but nonetheless provides an excellent fine dining experience. What a find! Presuming our son ends up going to Truman, we will be back. To start, the rolls are fresh baked every day and served with local honey butter. They are amazing! Easily the best bread I have ever had. They are a cross between a yeast roll and a biscuit with a hint of sweetness...incredible! My son had the chicken piccata which, though the portion was a bit small, was extremely flavorful. He ate every bit. I had the prime rib sandwich. The portion was large with plenty of provel cheese, onions and mushrooms. It was also delicious. My wife got a giant pile of roast pork served with warm apples and a sweet glaze. The pork was fall apart tender and the glaze added a punch of flavor. All 3 of us had the home fries as the side. These were the crispiest potatoes I have ever had in my life. 10/10. Out waitress/hostess had plenty to do (I think she may have bend doing kitchen prep as well) but she was friendly, welcoming and accommodating. A few tips: the restaurant is very small with few staff (like one person who is the hostess and waitress for the entire place). Reservations strongly recommend. And maybe don't come here if you're in a hurry. Service was not fast but it's clearly because they are taking great care with the food and preparing everything fresh to order. We stopped in late after a track meet at Truman State. They waited on us when otherwise they would have closed early. We are so glad they stayed open for our party of four! This is a nice, very clean, well-decorated restaurant featuring menu items with locally sourced ingredients. The couple who run the restaurant were very gracious and friendly, and we couldn't have asked for a better meal. Try the cheeseburgers, but beware of the pepper jack cheese. It's hot! Sebree's is a humble restaurant with world class food. The service was top notch and the atmosphere is cozy. We stopped in here on our way back from a hunting trip and were pleasantly surprised to find such a gem on a quiet country road. We had the beef bourguignon, the prime rib sandwich and the pork roast. We washed it all down with great beer and a bourbon that hit the spot. The taste and preparation of everything was outstanding. The portions were just right and the service was exceptional. I wish I could remember the name of the young lady who served us that night. She was the queen of hospitality! It was so good, we came back the next night, and had the same meals all over again. We got to meet one of the owners, Cindy that night. She was the hostess with the mostest! I truly enjoyed this place!! One of our nephew and his wife's favorite place in Missouri. They locally most ingredients and participate in a sea to land seafood program. As most places they aren't perfect, but the most all of food was excellent and all that I tasted was amazing. We had reservations but came a little early. They were a little busy for a small place but they got us taken care of. Love the sweet potato chips with homemade honey cream sauce made with locally sourced honey from my nephews bee hives. My mushroom & Swiss Burger was excellent. My father-in-law did care for his meal, he said the prime rib didn't seem like prime rib. It seemed very small compared to a similar pic on yelp. He said the onion rings were over done, I however loved them and ate most of his. One of nephew and his wife's favorite place. Salad-the usual. They have your house, Caesar, and chef salad. Lets just say, you don't come here for salad. Lemonade-"freshly squeezed"? If you like super lemon-y lemonade, this might not be for you. It did taste fresh and it was refreshing, but I wouldn't pay $2.00 for one cup without refills again. Entree-prime rib with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and bread. Meat was seasoned well and cooked beautifully. Potatoes could have used more salt or butter. Bread was pretty good too...you can tell they are fresh. Asparagus could use a little more seasoning but not overlooked. Overall, the food was delicious. The wait staff was a little rushed, but still managed to check up on you frequently enough. Price was fair. Sebree's is the best restaurant within an hour of Kirksville (including AJ's). Every time I've visited has been exemplary. If you're in Kirksville and want an experience a better burger than what McDonalds or Wendys has to offer, this is your only option, and is well worth the 15 minute drive. The burgers are simple- beef, bacon, and some cheese, but it's the quality of the ingredients that sets them apart. The beef is incredibly fresh and juicy and the bacon is cut almost as thick as the burgers. Drink selection is pretty decent. The drafts are usually a Boulevard or Schlafly, plus a few other craft beers. I know they make cocktails and there's a wine list, but I've never sampled either. Besides the burgers, I've had the liver, rabbit, and steak. All were excellent, but pale in comparison to what may be the best burgers I've ever had. The food here is surprisingly good. I went with a group of friends and for appetizers, we had the jalapeno poppers, sweet potato chips, and fried mushrooms. The jalapeno poppers were good. The sweet potato chips were excellent, and I really liked that the dipping sauce wasn't too sweet. The fried mushrooms were really nice. One of the specials of the night was rabbit, which was excellent. The mashed potatoes and zucchini that came with it were also really good. The pork roast had good flavor. The Philly cheesesteak was really good, and the autumn salad was light and fresh. The fettuccine alredo is very rich, but tasty. My husband had a bacon cheeseburger. The bacon is interesting - thick cut and probably smoked. It has a really nice flavor. The french fries are great. The staff is nice and the decor is simple and tasteful. Like others have said, Sebree's is worth the drive from Kirksville, especially if you don't have time to go up to Macon for AJ's and/or The Pear Tree. I'll definitely be back. read more

Love their Sunday brunch!! The breakfast casserole is my favor with soo many goodies and boiled egg in an egg casserole!! Fried chicken is legit, like real country fried chicken with crispy skin and juice meat, I always eat too much of them. Well, we finally made the trip to try this place and I must say we were somewhat disappointed. The food was close to 4 stars but unfortunately the service was horrible. Maybe the waitress was new because it seemed that some of the other waitresses had it together. Ours, not so much. We expected a longer wait time since the food is made from scratch so no complaints about that. We actually enjoy a longer wait to savor our food. The big issue was for sure the service. The waitress dropped our appetizer off and never came back to check on us. My husbands beer sat empty until he managed to flag our waitress down and ask her for one. The main course was served and once again, no check back from the waitress. Oh, and they were far from busy so that was not the issue. Onto the food itself. It was very enjoyable. The portion sizes were perfect. The roasted beets were wonderfully done. The calamari appetizer was very tasty and real. The breading had amazing flavor yet you could still taste the squid. It was a bit chewy but the taste made up for that. The coconut shrimp was very good and a nice surprise in the mid west. My husband had the prime rib sandwich. It was definitely a superior sandwich. Dessert was a disappointment mainly because it was advertised with ice cream. The waitress asked us if we wanted ice cream. Of course we said yes and then it was brought out with no ice cream. We mentioned it and it was brought out in a separate dish. We had serious dessert envy because we saw other tables get the same dessert with ice cream melting in the warm brownie drizzled with chocolate syrup. The food is amazing, the chef does wonders with everything he makes. The blackend catfish out of this world, the pork roast MELTS in your mouth. We were staying over in Kirksville with time to kill on a Friday night so we decided to forgo the chain restaurants in town and try Sebree's. It's a metal building with a cute rustic interior, the steak smell outside was amazing. The menu is made up of standards and a page full of what seen to be rotating seasonal menu items. They seem to be famous for prime rib but the night we were here they only had prime rib sandwich on the menu. We ended up doing chicken piccata and scallops for my husband with a bottle of wine. The server warned us that "a lot of tables came in at once so it will be about 30 minutes, is that ok?" We were game though I was a little surprised because there were only 7 tables with people and the place was 3/4 empty overall, but I guess a rural restaurant doing the farm to table thing has one chef salad it makes sense. Anyway, yes we waited but the server was attentive, the bottle of wine helped, and fresh salads were great. When food came it was delicious. The chicken was not overly breaded, lemon caper sauce perfect, and the sides were an amazing zucchini gratin and a really tender roll that I think was some kind of spoon bread. My husband said his food was great as well. So if you have some time and you're near Kirksville, it's worth the trip a little out of the way. read more

Sebrees opened their doors recently and we have been so pleased by the food and service that we have been there many times in the past several week. All of the food is made from scratch by a chef who obviously takes pride in what he does. They focus on fresh, local foods and cook everything to order. They offer lunch and dinner Wed - Sat. and have a great Brunch buffet on Sudays as well as dinner. My favorite thing is the Rueben sandwhich - totally amazing with homemade sour kraut and corned beef cooked to perfection on a marbled rye toast. The fries are wonderful as well as the sweet potatoe chips and other sides. The service is great, but the wait can be a little long once your order is placed because everyting is made to order. I do wish they offered a pre-meal tidbit while you waited - some rolls, biscuits, or anything else would be very welcome. It is kind of out of the way, but worth the trip - better then anything else in a 2 hour radius. read more
