There's always some interesting beers to try and the selection of 12 constantly rotating taps keeps things interesting. The place is laid back, service friendly and knowledgeable, only downside is that it's not the cheapest place to drink but the quality and variety of beers makes it worth the price. The Alehouse staff are very knowledgeable, as you would expect in a beer nirvana such as this. It gets busy in here, but it's usually quiet enough to have a quick chat with them as you try and decide which one of the delicious beverages on offer you will have. They're more than happy to let you taste test one before you commit to a full glass too. A great choice of beers are on offer and you're bound to find something you like on the rotating taps (the upcoming beers are listed on a wall next to the bar), but if you don't like anything on tap check out the beer fridges or even try one of their beer cocktails! In the front of the bar there are comfy couches along one side, with larger tables on the other side. In the adjoining room is the same setup, though this can be booked for private functions and it's also where the Wednesday night Trivia Night is held. Trivia is free, fun, and prizes include a bar tab, so you really can't go wrong with that. Out the back is a beer garden with a mix of tables and chairs in a variety of shapes and sizes, with a shady tree or two thrown in for good measure. As I mentioned, the food is great here. The first time I popped in the kitchen was being renovated and my order of fries was forgotten, but since then service has been prompt and the food delicious when it has arrived. I've been to Alehouse a few times now and will keep going back. I have managed to resist jumping off the tram to pop in so far, somehow but that won't last long...especially with an all too convenient tram stop right outside!

Thank you for your crinkle cut fries that accompany your burgers. I should mention the chicken burger, surrounded by crumbs; crunchy and tender. Thank you for your cider, from Colonial Brewing, because without you, I would never have known about this crisp, light drop. Thank you for your photo booth and pool table, your movie nights and your staff. But most of all, thank you for your beer garden. Still, one does wonder what is in a name, and the thing is quite a lot. However, that is beside the point because this is one of those great Bruswick pubs that you find scattered along Sydney Road. This place is really flexible, they have a list of about 100 beer styles that you can brew for the novice or if you are a bit more advanced you can do your own recipes or bring your own ingredients. The brewing process itself is really simple. You pick out all your ingredients from a recipe sheet and with the help of a staff member add each ingredient to the kettle when required. Whilst there you can sample some beers that have been brewed and even play a giant jenga! The brewing process takes about an hour, then your brew gets poured into a keg and gets wheeled away into the fridge to ferment. In 2-4 weeks time depending on the beer you brewed you go back to bottle it. Each kettle holds 50 litres, or 6 slabs, but you can just take 3 slabs. The price varies fro around $28-$33 for a slab of beer. You can bring your own bottles or purchase some to pour your beer into. The best part is you can buy $2 cans of beer that people have brewed but didn't take the whole amount. Great way to try out different styles and flavours of beer. The staff there are super relaxed and friendly. It is definitely the way i'm going to be buying beer in the furture. Great value and at least you know what goes into your beer!

We made three brews and divided the results between six people. This stage took around three hours so we had pizza delivered while we were making it.... while we drank more beer. In two to three weeks time, we came back and canned the results. You can bring your own bottles too. Only problem is there are no preservatives so it doesn't last if not refrigerated. Each brew we chose was $120 for around 100x 500mL (big) cans of beer. There were cheaper recipes too. My fave so far is the Hoegaarden clone that had rolled oats in it. Definitely doing this again, but make sure you have a big fridge!
