Many clothes were damaged, and the tag did not mention the damaged item. I understand that items are vintage, but it should be disclosed of the condition of the clothing. The v store was very hot and packed with people. I was unable to look at everything because shoppers kept bumping into me or cutting me off unfortunately. The clothes were not very organized either. It was hard to look through them. If they did crowd control and limit the shoppers inside, I may have had a better experience. This has been the most disappointing shop during my Scotland holiday so far.

Amstrongs has always got ripe vintage pickings. It is one of the most famous vintage stores in the…read morecountry, and was impressed to see the sign on this outlet saying it was founded in 1840. 1840! They were living in a time that everything was vintage (to us, anyway). It makes me wonder why they used to sell! However, despite my praise for the other outlet's glitzy displays, this Armstrong's has a bit less pizzaz. Don't get me wrong, it's still a prime target for rummaging, and I don't tend to surface from the shop for at least half an hour. But today I was let down (like in the other store) by vaguely ignorant customer servicem and by finding a few of my clothes on the rails! A 40s inspired Haiwaiian dress, eh? That may be the case, but what the tag failed to highlight was that it was in H&M last season. Not only that, but a fair few items from my wardrobe turned up in there, to the point I felt like I was in the Truman Show. I have a really horrible jumper I wear in bed that makes me look like a creepy kids TV presenter, and was surprised to say the least when it turned up in here (although perhaps not surprised at why it is unlikely to be purchased anytime soon.) Armstrongs is always fun, but I can't deny I was a bit disappointed. But I'm still going to go back because - well, it's Armstrongs!

It's really not up my street and they try to label most of it as 'vintage' when, really, it's just tack. The stock held here is almost exclusively furniture, so don't come here expecting to find any trinkets or general items of interest smaller than a chair. However, for the items it does stock, it does do rather well. Take one of the sideboards on offer for example. This was a piece that really caught my eye, simply because it's a fabulous piece of craftsmanship and quite obviously a cut above what you would normally find. Although the side holds a slight defect in the form of a cosmetic crack it's still great value at just under £400. Now I know you're thinking that it's a lot of money, because you can pick up a flat pack sideboard for £250, but consider not only the difference in quality and atmosphere generated by these items, but also the fact that in ten years your flat pack sideboard will be falling apart and worth very little whereas your antique will be a slightly older antique.

There were lots of wardrobes and I imagined stepping inside the intricate designs to find myself in Narnia or buying an old writing desk to find a 100 year old love letter hidden in a secret drawer. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the products on offer and if you're looking to furnish your home then this place is a good shout.

It was very different from the tchotchke shops found on the main strip. I wanted to buy out the store but I had to be practical while traveling. I was very surprised on how reasonable the prices were too. It's very close to the Royal Mile and so worth checking out.

According to everyone who's older than me this is one of the oldest established vintage clothing boutiques in Edinburgh. Lots of animal prints, lots of sequins and polyester, like any second hand shop really. but for some reason Herman Brown seems to be slightly uglier (which as we all know, is a great thing) having never found an excuse to wear a 150kg dress I'm sad to say I've bought NOTHING in the 800 times I've been in but it's still great fun trying stuff on.. There was granny jumpers aplenty, batwing sweaters, suede jackets and a decent selection for the boys. It's not overwhelmingly busy with stock, leaving you free to browse without your brain being bombarded with a ton of information. There is definitely enough to satisfy your vintage cravings however, and loads of accessories for you to dig into your wallets for. There is a good supply of boots, buckles and bangles, not to mention half a ton of gorgeous brooches in a glass cabinet underneath the cash desk. You can always tell vintage suppliers who hire experienced staff, and Herman Brown has that. They are a very approachable bunch who are informative if you want to find out more about an item. Herman Brown is full of goodies, and being established for over twenty years it's safe to say they didn't jump on a bandwagon - they built it!

This place is absolutely fantastic and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it one day when The Man dragged…read moremy hungover bum out the door and for a walk to discover our new neighborhood. We are doing up our house at the moment and, having moved from a flat, are in desperate need for furniture. We'd chosen to visit this part of town to check out the antique stores and happened upon Vintage and Reclaimed. The owner explained that the furniture is all new, but his standard stock is made from reclaimed timbers which gives it a fantastic look. He also stocks furniture made by someone down south (I think??) which has a more finished look to it and is also gorgeous. The best part about this place is that they are willing to make what you want to size. This means that if you fall in love with a piece of furniture they have on the shop floor and devastatingly discover that it won't fit in your house, not a problem! They will make one of the size and colour which you like. On top of this, the prices are SO reasonable. Seriously. The Man and I are looking for a massive wardrobe and the one we found here was a good £700+ cheaper than any other one we liked. After we left here we visited the aforementioned antique stores but just kept saying "it's not as good as Vintage and Reclaimed" so we gave up and decided that once the building work is done, we will scrape together our pennies and spend them all here.

There were loads of ex high street clothing brands for guys and girls, not to mention the usual array of old china, ornaments, photo frames and books. The staff were friendly and this well kept charity shop is for a good cause, so can't complain!

This shop is mostly clothing and bric-a-brac and though it's quite small, there's a lot contained within. Staff are really friendly and the store is usually quite busy at any time of the day. I managed to find myself a cute little romper for £4.50 and a Nine West satchel bag for £7. Very reasonably priced and so worth allowing the time to explore!

On the one hand, it's always great to see local retailers and designers being supported locally. And although I'm no art conoisseur there was some gorgeous stuff on display - mainly paintings and sketches of Scottish scenery - and I was surprised at how reasonably-priced some of it was. However, I did get the impression that in the huge big room of stalls and stands there were only about 3 or 4 different categories of things being sold. If you're the kind of person who loves browsing stall after stall of almost identical-looking glass jewellery or silver-plated chokers with semi-precious stones on them then you'll be in heaven here. Otherwise, you probably won't need to spend mor than 15 minutes or so here. That said, if you're in the area on the first saturday of every month then you should pop in for a browse.

However, some of the sellers are well established and also sell elsewhere in town. There are some lovely homeware and gift items such as art prints, lots of jewellery, knitted crafts, clever wooden items and ttweed purses, cafetieres etc. This market is not well advertised, as like others, I came across it by chance one day. The hall location is good for all weathers and for picking up Morningside foot traffic when the sign is out. However, the downside is that there are so many good home and giftware shops in the Morningside and Bruntsfield area, that they have a lot of competition.
