We stayed in the newest cabin, Cabin 12, which had lovely finishes and an oversized jack-and-jill bathroom and in-unit laundry. Kitchen came with more supplies than we even expected and was perfect for our cooking needs. Each cabin comes with an outdoor grill as well. Beds were comfortable and we loved the fireplace. This was an excellent home base for our Alaska adventure. The driving up there is beautiful, minimal traffic. There is not a whole lot in the immediate surrounding towns to Ninilchik but the views at Soaring Eagle are absolutely breathtaking. Waking up to mountains and ocean in one view just can't be beat.

I felt really good about my choice at first. The first hint that something might go wrong was when I was told to check in with one person before I left my home, but was told to check in with another person when I landed. Didn't think it was a big deal at first, maybe just a mistake. In any event, the check-in process went fine. The second hint that something was off was when I looked at our itinerary for the week. There was an awful lot of "TBD" items on the itinerary. Over half the trip had no information on the meeting places for the fishing trip each day. The accommodations are fine. Nothing fancy, just a decent fishing cabin with an amazing view. The town is great, nice and quiet and an easy drive to two big towns. No complaints at all with the accommodations. The main issue with the trip was the fishing trips themselves. Only one went off without a hitch, one with minor annoyances, and four were disasters. They mainly used one fishing charter company and they were terrible. They have this horrible scheduling and communication computer system that relies on cell phones to communicate the final details of your trip. You can imagine how well that works in Alaska. So why did I pick these guys? I liked the fly out fishing trip, the included fish processing, and the included rental car. The fly out trip was incredible. One of the best days of my life and I will never forget it. The rental car was great. Renting cars in Alaska is pricey and they make the process very smooth. There are plenty of fish processing places in the area and these guys were just not very good. You can hopefully find better. You can give these guys a try, but I'd advise that you ask them not to use Ninilchik Charters for your fishing trips. I probably won't use them again.

If you have a big group, be aware they allow about 6 people at a time on their boats. Coming back, we were scheduled for a 3pm pickup. We ran late due to some issues while rafting and messaged them on our InReach, easily rescheduling for a 7pm pickup. We finished early and with only about 45 minute's notice, they came and got us at 5:45pm instead! The captains have all been friendly. You can sit outside or in their cabin. They're also knowledgeable about the trails in the area; some are not very well maintained and they will give you a head's up on those.

Have you ever wanted to load into an old Cessna airplane, and crash land on an island inhabited by…read morelarge brown bears? Do you wish you could sneak over the fence at the zoo? If so, this tour is for you! Zack expertly flew us out to his secret spot, threading the needle between mountain tops and volcanoes to land us on a remote wilderness. We hiked over to a feeding hole and watched as the bears came in to cool down, fish and play. No one else was there with the visible bears well outnumbering our group 2 to 1. The bears came as close as 50' but Zack and Tim kept us calm. We stayed tight in our group and enjoyed the show. It was fantastic. We hiked back and found the planes and we were airborne before we could say "where is the runway?" Bears aside, it was a beautiful ride and amazing location. I can't wait to do it again.
