However, executive-level decision making was pro-management, and NOT pro-resident. The CEO announced weeks prior that he was closing down skilled nursing at the West campus, and all current residents in skilled nursing would be moved to the East campus about 8 miles down a busy highway. My husband I moved to a CCRC so that we could be TOGETHER as we aged. However, with this new scheme, if one spouse was healthy and the other required skilled nursing, the couple would be separated. Some affected couples no longer were able to drive, making this difficult. Residents could no longer just walk within our campus to visit the other spouse. We decided to move, because if they take away healthcare despite residents' calls to change his mind, what will be next? So I'd caution anyone to do more research and ask the hard questions before signing on the dotted line. And I read that according to US News and World Report, they have gotten some sort of #1 rating, but just know that where we moved to, our healthcare facility continues to have a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. And the ARC is ACTUALLY a CCRC -- independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, in-patient rehab, and memory care -- all available at the same campus. Imagine that!

Driving into the complex there is a gate guard so you have to have a specific purpose or appointment to even enter the premises. As you walk into The Mission, which is the building where my mother is, there are more security measures in place. The doors are always locked and opened by ringing reception. Then you must stop at reception and sign in electronically so you can be issued a pass. You know what there isn't!?! Adult diaper smell! Hospital smell! Old people smell!!! It is set up beautifully with separate halls dedicated to different attend to different issues. The level of care is second to none. EVERYONE is kind and pleasant. I have seen more humanity and patience here than ever before in my life. The level of dignity they treat the patients with is heartwarming. Their attention to detail is such a welcome quality... there are not enough wonderful adjectives to describe my experience with my mother here. I know there is independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehab here.. I think they also offer palliative and hospice care. If you have a loved one that you find yourself needing help with, I highly recommend this facility!!!

BSTE is a Life Plan Community with a full continuum of care; Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, Memory Care, Rehab Services and Hospice Care. This was a big decision that we had been researching and kicking around for several years while trying to make the best choice. After researching/visiting several differing venues (CCRCs, Del Webb, The Villages in Fl., Jimmy Buffet retirement communities, etc.) we settled on BSTE as our forever home. Blue Skies of Texas came out on top because it is both CARF certified and highly rated by Medicare. BSTE is one of only three CARF accredited Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) in the entire state of Texas indicating a very high level certification for care with management looking for continual improvement, which has really shined throughout this unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic. Downsizing appeared challenging until we finally committed to making the move. We decided an estate sale was the best choice for us as it easily eliminated a lot of unnecessary STUFF along with charitable donations because it was time to make new memories! The staff helped make our relocation extremely easy and the move-in amenities ranged from help with unpacking to picture hanging. The interaction between the residents and the staff is an unbelievable plus as all are very caring and friendly. Our neighbors and fellow residents are also extremely friendly, caring and always willing to give a helping hand. One can be as active as desired since the social amenities here are not only envious, but much more fulfilling than our previous lifestyle. As we learned longevity is attributed to 35% genetics and 65% social life, which is indicated by many wonderful BSTE residents. We couldn't have asked for a better place to live because it's like a cruise ship on land. We highly recommend this to all seniors looking for a more fulfilling, happier, and secure lifestyle.

She was there for rehabilitation due to a fall that caused several fractures. Within three hours her blood sugar had spiked to over 400 (I was monitoring it on my own device). I had to make 3 phone calls before someone addressed it. Also she fell while trying to get up to go to the bathroom because nobody answered the call button to take her there. When they called me to tell me she had fallen their story was she was looking for the remote. She was transported back to the hospital where she spent another 5 days!!! Upon arrival to Westover Hills Rehabilitation her bed was not made. She was not given any instructions as to where the bathroom was or where the call button was, we had to provide her with that information. There were mats on the floor that I was told was for her Neighbor that were all around her bed. Do yourself a favor. Find a better facility. If you care about your person at all. Victor was very quick to answer my calls when we were a prospect. Once my parent was admitted and there was an issue I cannot get a returned call from him. It appears he is always away from his desk or out of the office. I did get a call from a director of nursing (3 days later) who was not able to answer or address any of my concerns because she said she was just on her cell phone and did not have access to her computer. Why would a director of nursing make a phone call regarding patient concerns without having access to the patient's file? Please keep in mind that they did not initiate this call, I made several phone calls to them. I'm still waiting for them to call to see how my mother is doing. I won't hold my breath.

In this small facility, the hall smells of urine and of course the "big-overdone production" COVID screening with all the paper work you have to fill out just to visit. My friend was transferred from a 4 month hospital stay to that facility the end of February 2022 so, Monday, March 14th will be two weeks. It's my understanding, he is in quarantine after my visit for another 14 days. After watching my mom in another facility and now my friend, I pray to God that I continue to stay "under-the-radar" because I would rather die than live like this.

Recent as of August 19, 2019. We sat at a meeting with the Administrator to discuss visitation…read morepolicies of the facility. It concerns me the Administrator, Mrs/Ms Billie S. Hartman, LNFA interpretation of Lakeside visitation policy is not in complete compliance with CFR (Code of Federal Regulation), specifically as cited in Title 42, Section 483.10 Resident Rights. Though a lengthy governing citation, I took the liberty to read and compare the citation with the Facility's Policy. Please refer to Electronic Code of Federal at www.ecfr.gov to educate yourself to understand how visitation applies to your loved one. Our personal experience: My mother-in-law, an elderly women currently in hospice care at Lakeside Nursing Home/Facility is visited by my wife between 10:30 p.m. to (depending the condition and attention she receives) latest 2:30 a.m. and has been doing so for the past 6 to 7 months. These are the hours my mother was more alert before her conditioned declined and at my mother-in-laws request she hoped someone would visit at night. My mother-in-law can no longer communicate but she mumbles when she hears my wife's voice; reason enough for us to believe she acknowledges the our presence. Approximately 2 weeks ago, my wife visited on days she typically does not visit and found the following conditions substandard: -11:30 p.m. mother-in-law had a soiled diaper/pamper to midsection of her abdomen. My wife called on staff for assistance, the CNA on duty told my wife it wasn't my mother-in-law's turn to get changed. When the nurse came by to check on my mother-in-law (approximately 1:30 a.m.), my mother-in-law had yet to be attended. My wife refrained from reporting this to avoid the possibilities of retaliation from staff when she doesn't visit. What transpired instead was my wife being called in to hold a meeting with the Administrator to be told she could not visit at those hours due to violation of the roommates privacy rights as governed by Texas Law. (Texas.gov | The Official Website of the State of Texas Texas.gov | The Official Website of the State of Texas Access official, secure online government services and information for the State of Texas. Take it online, Texas! Resident rights; Health and Human Services mirrors CFR). Regulation cites a resident can have a visitor at any time of the the resident's preference, unless there is a clinical reason and/or the roommate places a limitation/request (this situation does not apply at this time). The Administrator further stressed if my wife continued to visit at the same hours, nurses would be instructed to prevent my wife with visitation access to my mother-in-law. I requested the Facility visitors policy from the Administrator and she continued to express our violation of the roommate's privacy in accordance to Texas Law. I requested the policy 3 times and didn't receive it from her, I ended up receiving it from another staff member. -The room's air condition was turned off, extremely humid and uncomfortable. Regulation cites rooms are to have temperature set between 71 and 81 degrees (seasonal settings are to be suggested). -Resident's restroom hand soap were heavily diluted with water. -the roommates wheel chair was away from her reach and she simply wanted to go the restroom. The roommate is mobile to use the restroom with assistance. My wife found it disturbing the CNA neglected to assist her. We have reached out to the Facility's Ombudsman and have been assured our concerns will be addressed. We do not want to take away that 95 percent of the staff are exceptional, but it only takes one downfall to present itself to rate the facility with a one star. Furthermore, we are more troubled how many visitors have been banned to visit their loved ones and for the loved one to feel abandoned (that is; their loved one is a "night" person like my mother-in-law). How many elderly are being neglected when there is no presence of family visiting? If you have been approached with limited visitation access, we suggest you take time to read the visitation policies as governed by Lakeside, Texas.gov and ecfr.gov; or, contact the facility's Ombudsman.
