We stayed in town for four nights. Ault boast an amazing location with cliffs and cliffwalks to both sides.
Walking along (on) the cliffs was something we did daily. Sometimes only a short section. But one day we walked a bigger section to the west, to the next village.
The walks here are impressive. Of course the cliffs you could see better from the bottom. But from the top of the cliffs you have beautiful views of the town and the ocean.
The hiking trail leading west from Ault starts pretty easy. But from time to time the trail gets quite very steep. Up and down. We caught a rainy and windy day. Without proper hiking shoes it would have been difficult. We've seen some walkers sliding down the trail on their behinds because they didn't have any grip with their sneakers. So be sure to check the weather or bring some good shoes. Luckily we did. There is a flatter, easier way as well, but not as close to the cliffs and the ocean.
The walk is really rewarding. In the middle of the green green nature. It's not really busy here at all. Really only a handful of people we've met over the time of maybe 2-3 hours. It's calm, it's quiet, it's relaxing. And the views breathtaking. Since you cross farmer's land - with the occasional cows - be respectful along the way.
Even in summer the temperature can drop clearly below 10°C and the wind is strong. Just bring the right clothes and you'll be fine. Forget an umbrella though. Bring a waterproof jacket instead in case of rain.
Some days we got sunshine. Which was nice. But also a rainy day was a wonderful experience. The mood, the atmosphere, the sky...it looks all different and is beautiful on its own right on a rainy day.
Since there isn't really anything along the way (that's the point), be sure to bring some snacks or a picnic with you. And liquids.
Ault, the cliffs and the walks have been fantastic. Really a highlight of our Road Trip through France. And unlike other cliffs and walks you almost got this place for yourself. read more
