Most of the time the no one came up to me and said hello or even cared if I ever came back. The Rabbi's never introduced themselves to me. Beth-El is very different! When I first walked in I was taken with the sun shining in from the beautiful stain glass. The women sit on one side and the men sit on the other. When the Torah came around the Rabbi greeted everyone in both the men and women's section! Women aren't ignored in this shul. He welcomed me and invited me to stay for kiddish. The other members of the shul also said hello and wanted to get to know me. Even though people have been going there for years they aren't cliquish at all. There is a book club, movie club and weekly lessons that are always worth coming to. We have a regular group of people who always have interesting opinions. If you're looking to doven at a shul which has a family feel this is the place. There are young people, older people, a mix of black hats and more modern orthodox. Everyone is respectful of each other. There is a full kiddish meal downstairs and people usually stay and talk for a long time afterward. It didn't take long for me to feel at home here, a matter of weeks actually. Within a year I was asked to join the board.

This is a large building along the eastern parkway which functions as a synagogue. I come with my…read moregirlfriend here every week for Jewish heritage class. We are both extremely interested and involved in exploring more about jewish identity and background. The class located on the third floor and is extremely interesting for an outsider like myself. The building itself is very clean and well-maintained and in many different classes going on a different plus. There's also a synagogue on the second floor but I've never seen it use as we come late in the evening. There is food which is brought during every class, and this is very good for a hungry group like us. It's also interesting to see the portraits of all the previous chairs on the second floor. All in all, I would say that this building is an important part of Jewish tradition and heritage in Brooklyn.

They daven Ashkenazi-Sefard, but it is less chassidish than some of the other nearby shuls. The members of Khilah Marine Park are fantastic. When someone has a baby the community cooks and delivers meals every day for a few weeks. A member sponsors a scholar in residence program for the time between Pesach and Shavous. Past speakers include R' Paysach Krohn and R' Rietti. There is a father and son learning program as well as Shabbos parties for girls. R. Baruch Pesach Mendelson is the rabbi and I believe he has shmicha in eruvim so come visit and a backyard eruv may be in your future.

I attended a Saturday morning service and Bat Mitzvah, and was impressed as soon as I walked in the building, I was immediately impressed with how light, bright and open everything was. The rabbi has a great personality - his love really comes through. The cantor has one of the most amazing singing voices I've ever heard - she is phenomenal! This is a reform congregation - and as the reviewer Joel mentioned - everyone is welcome! Gay, interfaith, whatever. It's a very warm and inviting place of community. I don't know that I was touched by the spirit to seek out a religious connection - but if that ever were to happen, I'd really hope I could find a place like BHS to call home. Interfaith and gay families have a home at the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue. There is a great concern for Tzedakah, education and mutual support. BHS has been running a homeless shelter for over 20 years, religious services, educational programs and social events. It is a place that can easily become your home.

If you are not a member of a Jewish synagogue, attending Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur services can be a challenge. Some temples are open only to members and others sell tickets to non-members. One congregation, Kolot Chayeinu, which meets in Park Slope, has always welcomed non-members to their services, at no cost, to a great response--standing room only at most services. We were looking at $1500 for a Saturday night (8pm-1am), then we were comfortable with the contracted $350 security deposit which was to be refunded and $200 cleaning fee, non-refundable. The owner had extremely terrible communication, especially after deposits were taken. During the set-up, he had people (perspective clients) checking out the venue. My partner & I didn't quite mind, but thought it to be unprofessional. The stereo system didn't work. The wall were dirty. (I can't believe we had to clean them) The refrigerator was FILTHY. (We couldn't use it) There were signs and debris from past parties/event stashed everywhere. He was somewhat attentive about the stereo and had someone try to fix it. We were pretty understanding, as we didn't have much time to fret and panic. Guest are starting to arrive and the stereo goes out. ARE YOU SERIOUS? We get it half way back on. Our party is successful, and by successful I mean the man of the hour enjoyed himself. After the crowd of 75 leave the venue, my partner and I clean up all the debris, sweep, etc. We left it better than we found it. Now we depart. After about a dozen calls to this guy, I STILL HAVEN'T RECEIVED MY $350 deposit back. He's dodged all of my calls and has yet to return my calls. My CC company couldn't complete the dispute as they couldn't get in touch with him. HE IS A THIEF. HE IS A CROOK. HIS PRODUCT IS BUSTED. I will do everything in my power to ruin this business.
