It's quite a large place once inside, and as we walked in at a front counter we were right next to a display of their rather expensive pastries and they looked delicious. The seats were comfy and the staff were a friendly bunch and they were super efficient. This place is on Belfast's Lisburn road, and although we had arrived just before 11am on a Monday morning we found on street pay car parking space very challenging to find indeed. I keep reminding myself that we are supposed to be in austerity yet the coffee bars are full and on street parking is at an expensive premium - seems austerity is only for the poorest and hammering down on our public services like the NHS, education and on and on. Think I'd rather pay fair taxation. It's become a much crazier world. As I write I hear Mr Trump on the radio claim he hasn't a racist bone in his body. I never thought I'd agree with him; he hasn't. The racism is evidently in his brain alone.

Although the sandwich was tasty and a lite messy due to the coleslaw and rocket the beef was not rare. There was also quite a bit of fat around the edges of the beef. Opted for a watercess, feta, beetroot and quinoa Salad as a side order. For 3.50 this salad was huge but a bit salty. Unfortunately didn't have room for dessert but took a look at all the lovely treats on offer for future reference. Great to see they are licensed as well, I will be back to try out the dinner menu along with some cocktails.

I then got a chocolate brownie and a small coffee to take out. The brownie was moist in the middle and had a salted caramel glaze on top, was one of the nicest brownies I have tasted and was quite big. It…read morewas the board outside Indigo advertising 3 flavours of vegan gelato which caught my attention, this is a rare thing in Northern Ireland! I couldn't resist and was not disappointed. These vegan ice creams are made from coconut milk and are completely dairy free plus they taste fantastic and exactly like a quality homemade ice cream instead of sorbet. I tried all 3 flavours of raspberry, mango and strawberry and enjoyed every morsel. Really luscious ice cream which was absolutely scrumptious and flavoursome. It's also great value for money as three large scoops cost £3 which is much cheaper than similar would cost in one of the many Froyo bars which have popped up in Belfast over the last couple of years. The Gent who served me was extremely helpful and knowledgeable explaining exactly what the vegan gelato was made from and telling me what Indigo offer. The menu is small but delightful offering ice cream, coffee, pastries and soup during cold weather. This little café which is larger inside than it looks outside has lovely bright décor and a relaxed ambience. It's ideal for a sunny day as the small outside seated area is a sun trap. Indigo is the true definition of hidden gem. I plan to return soon for coffee and more ice cream. There's free WiFi too which is always a bonus and beautiful artwork on the walls.

Second visit was also for a glass of wine which weirdly I was told by staff I couldn't order without also ordering food, so I left and went elsewhere, but found this strange as it wasn't the case on my previous visit. My third visit was today, Saturday 7 May 2016, for breakfast. Service today was a bit of a let down. On arrival a waiter showed me to a table which was filthy. No problem with that as he wiped both table and seats down (crumbs everywhere) but left everything soaking. Thus I had to dry off the chair myself with a tissue which I thought poor. I ordered a 'Brisbane Breakfast' which was one slice of sourdough bread topped with mashed avacado and two poached eggs. There was supposedly vegemite, feta and mint in it but I didn't really get those flavours coming through. Initially it tasted a bit bland so I added salt and black pepper which helped enhance the flavour. A nice enough dish once seasoned but nothing special and extremely extortionate at a cost of £8.50. I've had similar and more flavourful elsewhere for much less money. Additionally I ordered a large Americano (£2.40) and was horrified at the tiny cup of coffee I received. It was only when I paid my bill at the end of my breakfast that I realised they'd served me a small Americano (£2.20) in error. So in total my coffee and breakfast cost £10.70 which it really wasn't worth. Ultimately not a very enjoyable or relaxing visit. As well as feeling the food was grossly overpriced I found General Merchants to be uncomfortably packed with people and thus noisy and cramped. Waiting staff didn't bother to ask if my food was okay either while I was at my table nor when I went to the counter to pay for my meal. Overall very disappointing as I was happy to see this cafe open on Ormeau Road and initially loved the look of the menu, decor and ambience. However sadly it doesn't live up to my expectations and I now think of General Merchants as more style over substance. I won't be rushing back.

On the plus side it's hipster, looks lovely and the service is spectacular! But on the negative it's very expensive. My malt loaf toast with butter and a mini pot of jam set me back £2! But it came on a nice wooden board and was well presented - I think these days we're paying for that as much as the food itself! As mentioned the service is something special. As soon as I entered I was approached by a chap who was all too happy to help. He even guided me to a plug and brought me some bottled water while I browsed the menu! I got a nice seat by the open windows and watched the world go by! It was a lovely scenic setting for my morning coffee, which as it happens was fantastic. My sweet potato, halloumi and portobello mushroom burger with chips was completely bland. Wine was nice, service lovely and the Artist studio style interior of Cafe Conor ensures it's still one of Belfast's most beautiful restaurants. Unfortunately all this is for nothing if food is a let down. I rated Conor 5 stars over a year ago but now it's a 3. This is not just based on tonight's visit alone, instead in the past year I've had a couple of lunches and dinners here, each flavourless and a bit of a let down. I kept returning because a couple of years ago the food from Cafe Conor was fabulous, tasty and luscious. Their halloumi, green bean and poached egg salad would have topped my list of all time favourite dishes. Sadly this dish is no longer offered. I hoped on each visit over the last year that I would experience some of the old Conor magic, but that never happened. I don't know why this is.
