It started out with two appetizers: roll your own rice paper salad rolls and deep fried squid. The first came with so many wonderful ingredients to roll up. Chicken breast and an array of vegetables. Also included was a delicious dipping sauce. The squid, well let me just say that I don't like squid. Never did. I tried it anyway and it was so expertly done that I ate it and like it. The breading was nice and crisp, not at all greasy and the squid itself was nicely seasoned and so tender it was simply amazing. This also came with a delicate dipping sauce. My mains were an Asian chicken salad and a salmon dish. OMG, soooo good. The chicken salad had grilled chicken breast strips, loads of fresh local veggies. And a delightful dressing to pull it all together. The salmon had a caramelized sauce and more fresh veggies. The sweetness of the sauce along with the savory salmon and the veggies made it a feast. And the dessert, oh my. I didn't eat the boba pearls, since I didn't really like their consistency, but the rest was amazing. That ice cream was heavenly and the flan like cream with the sauce, simply heavenly.

Originally, I made dinner reservations for Saturday night through the OpenTable app a month in advance, but ended up changing our reservation to lunch service since we were scheduled to check out of our hotel by 9:00 AM Sunday. Instead of walking from our hotel (Hyatt Regency at Darling Harbour) to the Sydney Opera House, we chose to catch a ferry from the nearby Barangaroo Pier. Also, the ferry route took us directly into Circular Quay, with spectacular views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, in an air-conditioned cabin, since we dressed up and didn't want to ruin our shoes or clothes along the way. The ferry ride cost us only $17.70 AUD, or around $12.50 USD, round-trip per person. I suppose we could've caught a ride-share or another form of public transportation, but the ferries offer a more scenic ride. The ambiance of Bennelong Restaurant was impressive, with its sail-like architectural design by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, and each dish was artistically crafted to complement the UNESCO Heritage Site. Under the direction of Executive Chef Peter Gilmore, Head Chef Rob Cockerill and his fine-tuned kitchen team executed menus (two and three-course prix fixe, à la carte, and bar) which captured the essence of contemporary Australian dining by featuring the finest and freshest seasonal Australian ingredients. We were seated in The Main Dining Room, one of the five distinct dining levels, which offered gorgeous views of Circular Quay. After imbibing cocktails (Burn it Down $36 AUD and Lemon & Melon $22 AUD) along with six sweet, creamy, and slightly briny Sydney Rock Oysters with Lemon Pepper Granita $54 AUD, we selected the 3-course lunch menu (entree, main, sides, and dessert) experience, which cost us $225 AUD per person. We couldn't be more pleased with the exquisite artistry, creativity, flavors, and expert preparation of the dishes. Also, we noticed and appreciated the sophisticated yet not stuffy teamwork, genuineness, and Australian hospitality of all the servers who interacted with us, directly and indirectly, from start to finish. As we were selecting our entrees and mains from the menu, our server pointed out the menu items listing locally and sustainably sourced Australian produce and ingredients from farmers, fishermen, and growers who use sustainable practices. Each dish was stunningly plated and looked too pretty to bite into, but we were informed that, as a couple dining, we had a two-hour limit in the dining room. Our server delivered each course promptly, and we never felt that the service lagged or rushed. In between courses, we could leisurely converse with one another and allow our taste buds to savor everything. Right off the bat, the view and position are probably one of the best in Sydney. We were greeted at the front door by a very friendly and professional gentleman, who proceeded to guid us to our table on the terrace over looking the Marina. We were instantly given water, menus, and then a complementary starter of deep fried dates, which were amazing. Followed by warm fresh bread and yogurt butter with black volcanic ash and sea salt,, I know right??,, but it was devine. After being told the specials, we received our drinks and our entrees arrived soon after. I ordered the Oyster Flight, 3x2 oysters, Pacific, Sydney Rock and Angassi, each paired with a Prosecco, Riesling and Vermentino. Probably one of the best entrees I've had in a long time. Definitely the best pacific oysters. The Calameretti was incredible, extremely lightly and finely crumbed, and cooked to perfection, and my son thoroughly enjoyed them. The duck fat fries were perfect, hand cut and rustic, a great addition for the table. And the pork and veal meatballs (Polpettine) were authentically Italian and delicious. My wife ordered the squid ink pasta, which was almost the size of a main, complete with prawns and scallops, and was very tasty. For mains my son had the Barramundi Fillet, cooked to perfection, and from a 13 year old, that's saying a lot. I had the slow braised lamb shank, which was served on a bed of saffron and leak risotto, again, perfectly cooked and the meat just fell from the bone, highly recommended. My wife had the suckling pig. Again, an incredible portion, which she couldn't finish, but in no way was that a result of the flavour, absolutely tender and tasty. For desert we enjoyed the Tiramisu, Gelato, Affogato and Pistachio Slice. Coffee arrived just before the dessert,, which I love and is a must whenever I'm out, but rarely receive. As a starter drink we ordered Mojitos which we usually love, however on this occasion they were bitter and yuck...! After inquiring with the wait staff I learnt that they made them with Tonic Water and not Soda which is the traditional ingredient. The waiter said it was how they make them in Italy....(Note to self, don't order Mojitos in Italy). The service is best described as Faulty Towers! Anyway what's done is done but I'm not going to be a returning guest.

Checking online now, it looks like they have yuzu cheesecake as another dessert option instead of the black sesame/matcha one we had. I thought the black sesame/matcha dessert was fantastic. If the menu does change, that's also pretty neat. My favorites were the katsu sandwich, tartare, and the seared salmon (?) in the bento box. I personally wasn't as much a fan of the edamame or the okonomiyaki (?), but they fit with the Japanese food theme. Sitting by the windows, we had a really nice view. Drinks service was pretty slow as we waited at the large communal brass topped table but not exceptionally so. Vale Ale is a great drop and pleased to see it on the list, tbh. We got a nice table in the window and proceeded to give the menu a once over. Plenty of old favs here and a few new ones as well, including a Collective Menu for tables of 6 or more, which we decided looked like us. This is a selection of three small plates, two each of chilli quail, tuna tartare and mozzarella with tomatoes. For the main event a lamb shoulder, while snapper and a cous cous dish, plus a side of greens. We added a couple of fries to round it out. The desert was alternate drop of a chocolate mouse cake and a mixture of strawberries and watermelon with strawberry ice cream. The food was all very nice, almost but not quite exceptional, let down a little by the service. I think that was more because they had the busiest day since they opened 6 weeks ago rather than anything else, but we did struggle to get attention a couple of times. Atmosphere/Appearance: Located inside the Park Hyatt is this incredible establishment known as The Dining Room by James Viles. It is elegant, illustrious, warm, intimate and provided amazing views of both the Sydney Harbor Bridge and Opera House. The restaurant is open and the music was soft. We were sat directly in the middle of the restaurant, but it was okay, we had a good 360° view all around us. Service: We were taken care of very well and had no complaints at all. Food: So we were here during Sydney's autumn season as it was heading into winter time and this place serves a very on-brand seasonal tasting menu! Unfortunately, seeing as this was almost 2 years ago and I didn't take any pictures of the menu, all I have are the pictures I took to go off of. Lol. However, I do remember truly enjoying everything I had here. The unique part of this dinner is that everything came out at once! So on the table was a trio of sauces. One of them was a spicy oil, another a sweeter jam of sorts and the last, a more salty concoction. Our next course was this pumpkin sheet, goat cheese, cucumber concoction that fired on all cylinders balancing the sweet, with the savory, crunchy with the creamy. Well done. Next up was a salad sort-of dish similar to the last, but with no pumpkin, instead, still cucumbers, a creamy, mild cheese and a savory broth. Nice. Last, we had a big cut of steak. It was cooked to perfection, soft, tender and crazy-flavorful! I was a big fan. Like I mentioned, everything came out at once, so you could have a little bit of steak, then change things up with the pumpkin or pour one of those sauces on whatever you wanted.
