Dr Barshack is not a therapist and his specialty is pharmacology/med management. Although it's not my choice to use illegal substances or others not prescribed by my doctor, I've seen enough good doctors to understand that they will share the truth with the patient and any research done on the topic including any pros and cons. There are very good reasons for patient confidentiality and I hope one negative review from a parent of a teen who doesn't follow doctor's orders doesn't reflect negatively on such a good professional who saves lives daily. Medication is part of the equation but not the entire picture. She also believes that medication should help fairly quickly (within 2 weeks), otherwise we needed to try something else. This is unlike some other psychiatrists I have had that would tell me I needed to continue to feel miserable for another 6-8 weeks before the meds would help me. She retraumatized me by making me write out my trauma and reread it every day to myself and her while I was currently in an unsafe environment. I can say that this did not alleviate the trauma symptoms and rereading it and reliving it every day only made my symptoms worse which she gaslit me and reassured me that it would subside. The trauma has not subsided and I got fired from my job for having severe symptoms which I experienced alone loosing the ability to afford therapy. This is absolute negligence and comes from a dangerously uninformed non- trauma-informed lens. This approach is not empirically supported and she touts. This experience added to my trauma and I spent an insane amount of money only to be gaslit, retraumatized, and revictimized.
