Beware hidden charges. My family stayed here just a few days ago and we were yelled at across the parking lot by one of the cleaning professionals and the young woman working the front desk. Absolutely humiliating experience. They charged an extra 50 dollar fee to my mother in law's credit card (she had booked the holiday for us as a gift) because my 11 month old son left lots of cracker crumbs on the carpet. They claimed that the carpet would need professional cleaning, but I don't see how that's possible since the only problem was dry crumbs from teething wafers.
Not only did they not allow us to at least pay the fee ourselves so my mother in law wouldn't be charged but they told us that the day before when they cleaned they saw the cracker crumbs and it was a problem then. I don't understand why if they noticed it the day before they didn't just tell us so we could be more careful. We asked if there was anything else we did wrong and they said we made the trash bin too full and we should have switched out the bag. I have just never experienced this kind of treatment at a motel, ever. If we had been told upon checking in that we should take out our own trash trash out and sweep the carpet we would have done so. In fact when we checked out my husband apologized for leaving the place messy and the receptionist told him it was fine but that people usually rinse and stack the dishes before they check out, so I went back immediately and did so without complaint, not a problem at all. While I was cleaning up the receptionist burst in and kicked me out even though it wasn't yet ten (checkout time) and I was trying to do as she asked.
It really wasn't the fee that troubled us so much, it was the behavior of the staff. They treated us so rudely and made us feel completely embarrassed and ashamed. The housekeeper said she has three kids and is "much cleaner than you people" and the receptionist said that "anyone with any common sense would know to have cleaned up".
Worst experience in any hotel I've ever stayed in, in any country. Completely soured our trip to Hanmer and made us feel about one inch tall. Aside from that confrontation we didn't enjoy the room. It was so so tiny and the television only had about ten channels and the heater was positioned to blow right in your face if you're sitting at the table. Uncomfortable and unpleasant on many levels. read more
