Not only is Carlingford a beautiful little village filled with flowers, cobbled streets and medieval castles/ architecture, it's also located beside a stunning lough. We booked our accommodation, a mystery cocktail tour and an evening meal through Visit Carlingford. Everything was organised perfectly and this made our trip completely stress free and enjoyable. Brilliant. Customer Service-wise, that's a different matter altogether. It's also a bit difficult to give it a rating in the sense that like most places it's a very narrow experience you go through here - you either sort yourself out with a ticket from the magic ticket-selling box or you pay the driver on the bus. However that narrow face to face experience does totally vary on the driver you get from journey to journey - they're either smiley and cheerful or ignorant a$$hats who barely acknowledge you and leave you happy enough to leave your earbuds in while you do The Exchange and then go get a seat onboard. Sometimes they moan at you for not buying a ticket from the magic ticket-selling box in the waiting room-office-lobby whatever it is, not realising that some people only just arrive to catch their bus within a few minutes or seconds of arriving there. The men who mind the little office could also do with being a bit more Customer Service-y as well - they're not very good at hiding that annoyed/indifferent/frustrated look all over their Chevy Chase when they're busy flicking through their newspaper or playing with their mobile or dragging out a phone call, or toying with their mobile while they're on a phone call. They also like to play hide and seek when their Spidey Sense alerts them to a customer approaching their glassed-in desk, but they only have that spot behind the wall to the side of said glassed-in desk to hide behind. It's not very imaginative, so I don't know why they hide there for so long. It gets old fast waiting for them to stop playing silly buggers when you need to catch a bus in a hurry. The bus station itself is in the heart of the town close to loads of shops and nearby ATMs and services include the very convenient bus to/from Newry up North.

My husband and I both got fish & chips which were great, and the kids got chicken nuggets and chips and pasta, great big portions and everything came very quickly (though we were having a pretty early dinner, around 5 pm). I was impressed that the pasta had a chunky homemade bolognese sauce on it. The beer menu seemed somewhat limited but that could also be due to Covid and how much they're able to supply at the moment. We sat in their outdoor seating area which is OK - they've definitely done their best to try and stay open and meet the restrictions! I think I will enjoy it better when the indoor dining reopens though as it's hard to make a tent attractive. This is a great little off-the-beaten-track place though and I do hope to be back soon.

Walking through the bar I was sure we were going to a seat at the back, away from the windows, but large double doors opened into a bright modern restaurant, with a wonderful view of the sea through windows that run the full length of the the dining area. The food was very nice, and the view and surroundings were pretty spectacular. The sun was shining, and two horses were cantering down the beach. We went for a stroll along the sea front after our meal. Very idyllic.

A second lock down though would be disastrous. I hope now with Covid that the owners will very soon find a plumber to re - introduce hot water in the wash rooms and find an electrician to turn up the heat on the air hand driers. They might even have a word with the lady who dishes out the vegetables to be a little less mean with the portions, particularly with another quid being eked out as she's been tight fisted for a very long time now as I recall noting this in a review a year or more ago. The service was ace especially the staff who tend the tables they are all really a brilliant bunch. The servers make it 5 star, the food quality is three star, the extra £1 hasn't brought about any higher quality and the vegetable portions are two star so about 4 star on balance.
