I have to come right out the gate in awe at a $6 footlong sandwich still being available in this economy, I think the 1/2 was only a tad over $3. The portion and flavor is both excellent for their Pork sammy, which is what I got. Their beef version is a little more pricey, but the quality and flavor is delicious. You don't come here to stay and eat, you come to get a delicious sammy to go. The bread is fresh and the meat is high quality and well flavored. And of course, the fresh vegetables are bright and crisp as all Banh mis should be. Did I mention the price already? For that alone, this place is worth a visit.

On Sunday (6/21), I ordered four sandwiches and ate half of one right away. I actually remember thinking to myself, "This is really good." I saved another sandwich for Monday, and as I was getting toward the end of it, it started falling apart on my plate. That's when I noticed a piece of hair inside. Needless to say, I was completely disgusted. Finding hair in food is one of those things that's hard to get past, especially when you're almost finished eating and realize you've already consumed most of it. It's incredibly disappointing because I had just started to become a regular customer and was genuinely enjoying their sandwiches. Unfortunately, this experience has completely turned me off, and I don't think I'll be coming back.

While most people know them for their famous bánh mì sandwiches, I don't think their hot food gets nearly enough attention and that's a shame because it's absolutely worth the visit. My go to order is the broken rice combination plate. It comes loaded with a pork chop, egg meatloaf (chả trứng), shredded pork, fresh salad, pickled vegetables, and a side of soup. The pork chop is always tender and flavorful, and the portions are incredibly generous for the price. Every component of the plate feels thoughtfully prepared, making it a satisfying and well-balanced meal. Beyond the food, the service has always been friendly and efficient. Even during busy times, the staff keeps things moving while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere. The value here is hard to beat, especially considering the quality and portion sizes. Huong Lan is one of those true hole-in-the-wall gems that many people overlook. If you've only stopped by for a sandwich, you're missing out on some of their best offerings. For anyone looking for authentic Vietnamese comfort food at a reasonable price, this place is an easy recommendation. I'll definitely keep coming back for that broken rice plate. Highly recommended!

I stopped going there about a year ago and was getting my son his banh mi across the street at Duc Huong. Well, the line at Duc Huong was soooo long today and I hadn't eaten anything all day and it was probably almost 1pm by that point. We went to the Filipino Fiesta of Sacramento this AM to watch the live entertainment but I didn't want to wait in line for any of the trucks. I got one bánh giầy - $2.75; two fried spring rolls - the ones fried in rice paper - $.95/each; one regular egg roll - traditional kind filled with cabbage and pork - $1.50; and, for my son, a bbq pork bánh mì - no butter, extra onion - $5.75. I know the coffee drinks there are too sweet for me so we headed to the Starbucks down the street for me to get my drink there so I could sweeten with Stevia. I liked everything except for the regular egg roll. The filling was very salty. The bread for the sandwich was a great texture (from what I sampled) and the filling was ample. My son seemed to like it. Huong Lan's is the only place I know that puts onion in the sandwich. I liked the simplicity of the one bánh giầy. It's just mochi and pork. Mini-sammich with the fried rice paper spring rolls is a nice combo of taste and textures. :) Duc Huong was my first choice because I like the bread and they really are generous with the filling - so the price is ok considering - but in a pinch Huong Lan works.

The deli sandwiches is where it's at though, and there's always a long line. The sandwiches are so loaded! You get the order sheet to the left side of the deli and put your form in the basket. Then walk around the store and pick up delicious cheeses, charcuterie meats, snacks, and fresh pasta. Their ravioli is pretty famous and reminds me of an upgraded version of the nostalgic soft, square beef raviolis that I grew up eating. If you don't want to commit to the entire box of take-home ravioli, you can buy it by smaller tubs from the deli. After 20-30 mins, your sandwich should be ready for pickup. The workers there are so friendly and provide great service. They genuinely seem to like their jobs. We got one guy helping us out from one end of the deli to the other end and he was so patient and happy the entire time. There was a sweet lady handing out cheese samples as well. Everything I tried was so delicious. I especially loved how thin they slice the charcuterie meats where they are translucent when held up to the light. Can't wait to go back for their fresh pastas and homemade sauces.

The employee had told me that he thought it was the best sandwich he's ever made and was not wrong. I tore it the hell up. My to-go order is the Hornet on a Dutch crunch roll with everything on it except mustard. Make it a combo with chips and a drink, and you'll have an incredible lunch. The ambiance is different from other sandwich spots in midtown. The chairs and tables are older and worn, and it's small inside, but it's also inside an old house that was converted into a restaurant. That alone makes this place unique. People hang out inside or outside with friends and enjoy the vibes. There's a real sense of community that the Sandwich Spot brings along with uniquely crafted sandwiches. All of the sandwiches are named after people or landmarks in Sacramento. The staff are all friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and will help you with recommendations if you're not sure which sandwich to get. It honestly feels like you're in the company of good friends. The staff joke around and seem to enjoy their job and working together. You won't be disappointed by trying the Sandwich Spot during your next lunch break or on the weekend, hanging out with a friend.
