It was this Bird's branch that my mother would send me out to every week to pick up a cream cake for each of us. My father's choice would ALWAYS be the vanilla cream slice! It was this very store that opened my eyes to a variety of cream cakes. It was only when I moved away from the Derby area, did I realize it was a regional specialty. For many years I would return and devour a huge selection of their cream cakes to make up for the times there has been a drought. My favourites include their cream bun, trifle, vanilla cream slice, cream meringue and apple puff. They also do confectionary, breads and savoury pasties/pies. Muffin Break is a small chain, operating on a franchise model in most parts and the store did have a feel to it, the staff member working seemed distracted but she did also seem friendly/helpful whenever I wanted to ask a question or make a purchase, so that was okay. The opening hours of the cafe is also puzzling as it closes at 5:30 pm which is much earlier than the rest of the mall, which sometimes stays open until 8 pm: it makes little sense. I chose the last gluten-free muffin of the day, the chocolate and strawberry muffin, it was pretty cheap at £2.40 which was even £0.10 cheaper than their Chester store however I wasn't too impressed, the chocolate chips had a strange taste too and I don't think it went well with the strawberries, while I did like the combination of white and milk chocolate as icing and the regular part of the muffin without the chocolate chips was okay, I wasn't too impressed overall. Better than the Chester store, but that wouldn't be hard. Perhaps with some improvements to ensure staff members don't become sidetracked and making sure every part of the muffin is of sufficient quality this place can become more than the second-best coffee shop in the shopping centre (There isn't that many either so second-best isn't entierly brilliant). 2*

There is a good sized menu for one so small and the prices are really low (90p for a tea). The cafe is very snug and cozy and crammed with cycling ephemera. The staff were friendly and so very helpful. We walked in late Christmas eve afternoon and they put out chairs for us making us feel a little guilty. There is a stock of games and puzzles to pass the time and our dog, or any dog, was welcomed and a water bowl provided. Mum was particularly impressed that the freshly made scones came with real butter.

A selection of different sized tables named after flowers - Poppy, Violet etc, were suitable for different sized parties. The menu was varied and very reasonably priced, from beans on toast to paninis, homemade cakes to breakfasts for the larger or smaller appetite. The breakfasts were cooked to order and looked extremely appetising, with a basket of toast. A good variety of drinks too, including a flavoursome Cappuccino and a very chocolatey Hot Chocolate! They also sold Ice Cream too, Lemon Meringue and Sticky Toffee amongst the flavours. The Flower Cafe also sells plants, offers a garden design service and has themed evenings like 'Pudding Night' - whose menu looked very tempting!
