I called around to multiple bakeries in the Boulder/Denver area, looking for someone who could make a custom birthday cake based on a lemon meringue pie, and every shop made a huge fuss about making a cake with meringue. But not Shamane's! The ordering process was done over email and so smooth. Rebecca answered my many question thoroughly and with grace. They were able to accommodate all my requests. I am a repeat customer at Shamane's as I send my boss a cake for her birthday from here every year. This year, they call me to tell me I was expected to pick up a cake at 10AM (it's 4PM MST at this point) when I have always explicitly done a delivery. My issue is not necessarily with the mistake that they didn't catch that the address was not on the request (apparently, although I can't believe that I would put delivery and then not enter in the address) but the way that I was spoken to by Linda and how she handled the interaction. She called me 6 hours past when the cake was to be delivered, was condescending and rude, had zero customer service acumen, proceeded to blame everything on me (blaming the customer is totally the way to go with customer service) and then proceeded to blame me yet again in the invoice she sent over for paying extra for the delivery. Why did they accept a delivery order and not catch there was no address earlier? I ordered this almost a month ago. But putting that aside, which really isn't that big of a deal in of itself, Linda calls me 6 hours late and treats me in a way that ensures I will find another bakery in Boulder going forward. No carrot cake is worth being treated as a customer like she treated me. read more

We love Shamanes! Years ago, Shamane baked our wedding cake. The cake was beyond fabulous. The entire experience was terrific; Shamane listened to us at the tasting and made a perfect cake for both my wife and me. Now, whenever we are in Boulder, we try to stop in for lunch or treats. We did so again the day before Thanksgiving. Even though the shop was busy, meeting the holiday pie orders, every employee was friendly and fantastic. We tried the breakfast pasties for the first time and they were awesome. The light flaky crust was heaven. We also often order quiches when we are entertaining. There are not enough good things to say about Shamane's Bakery and Café. It is a special treat and always worth the drive from Denver. read more

My boyfriend surprised me with their "breakfast in Paris" take home box for Valentine's Day...INCREDIBLE. AMAZING. WOW. First of all their croissants are ACTUALLY as good as Parisian croissants. I was sadly disappointed in Shamane's. We were looking specifically for a cupcake baker for our wedding, who could also make us a cake for the ceremony. I read on the website that shamane was on the board for the famers market, so I had very high hopes for quality as well as her comitment to the community and the environment. We pre-ordered a box of cupcakes to taste, but what we received was not what we ordered (included red velvet, which we specifically did not want). We also bought two additional cupcake flavors when we were there, but that caused us to get a duplicate, the red velvet - of course. :( The sample box itself was made of plastic (as were the individual cupcake containers) instead of biodegradable or compostable materials. We are particularly sensitive to this since we are trying to have a green wedding. :( We didn't schedule a meeting since shamane said she was busy, but she came out to talk to us when we were there. :) We asked about doing something pumpkin flavored out of season, and instead of just saying no, she offered to use canned or frozen pumpkin :( I bet she was just trying to give us options in case we absolutely had to have pumpkin at our wedding, but I would have preferred that a baker try to talk us out of doing something that might not live up to their standard of quality. The cupcakes themselves were also not great. They weren't bad, but they didn't live up to our expectations. We had everyone in my fiances family help us with tasting, but no one was very impressed. The chocolate chocolate one was very dense and heavy. There was so much cocoa in the cupcake part it tasted almost bitter like dark chocolate, but the frosting wasn't sweet enough to balance it out. On its own the chocolate frosting was also light on chocolate. Everyone disliked this one, but for different reasons. The lemon cupcake was okay, there was a nice sour center of lemon curd or the like. I thought it could be more sour, but another of the wedding party thought it was almost too sour. Though this was several peoples favorite, we were all talking about the lemon in the middle, no one noticed the cupcake or the frosting. The red velvet (as previously stated, bride and groom's least favorite flavor) was almost nondescript and didn't leave much of a memory. The one comment I heard was that the cream cheese flavor in the frosting made the frosting a smidge too tart. My favorite was the carrot cake. I love carrot/zucchini/pumpkin/veggies in my baking, so no surprise here. The crowd had the same comment about the cream cheese frosting in the carrot, but I quite liked the cupcake, though I would have preferred more spice. One star for the turkey sandwich we ordered for lunch, which was actually very good. Another star for the lavender rose lemonade, which was fabulous. :) The third star is for the blueberry rhubarb tart we also picked up while there. Toasted in the oven for five minutes after we got it home, it was the whole family's favorite item (too bad we were shopping for cupcakes). As a cafe, I'd recommend this place. But if you are looking for cupcakes, maybe try a cupcake specific baker, we've had better luck with those. read more

I planned my wedding in Estes Park from out of state and Shamane was great and very helpful through the entire process. I got 4 different cakes each a different flavor and the end result was better than I was expecting. The cakes the day of the wedding were just as good as they were during the tasting and she captured my vision perfectly. I got the rose petal and lemon (my personal favorite), coconut, almond and raspberry (my second favorite) and champagne toast as my flavors. Everyone at the wedding was impressed and each of my guests had picked a favorite. If I were to do it all over again I would pick Shamanes bake shoppe in a heart beat. read more

Having moved up here from Miami last year it's been a journey trying to discover new and delicious options and you will not be disappointed by the offerings here. The staff is welcoming, helpful and friendly, had the good fortune to meet Shamane as well this lady is talented! We've tried everything from the chicken pot pie(BEST I'VE EVER HAD) the quiches, ham and cheese croissant, the sweets like a delicious passionfruit mousse cake as well as the coffee. Delicious cakes, pies and sandwiches. Every item has been tasted great and looked fantastic. The reason for 4 stars is that twice I've asked for a specific cake to be produced for birthdays and both times they have missed on the toppings. The first time a butter cream icing was requested and the cake was Ganache'd. The second time a vanilla butter cream icing was requested and there was neither vanilla nor sugar in the icing - tasted like Crisco and butter. I ordered a sugar donut, a cappuccino and a bacon egg and cheese sandwich. It was my 1st time in the shoppe. And I have heard great things over the years from friends so I decided to check It out! The staff members were all very friendly. The atmosphere of the cafe was nice, I just wish the pastries were a bit tastier. The donut looked good, but the dough was a bit chewy, and had an underwhelming taste overall. I also had the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich with a biscuit. The presentation was great! The taste was much better as well; but the biscuit was so so.... The texture was crumbly, but not warm and soft. I am assuming today was a bit of a fluke. I read an article that mentioned Shamane's so it went on my list of places to try in CO and I happened to be in Boulder last Saturday and made my way there with a friend. First of all, it's in a business park which was almost deserted on a Saturday. The gps warned us that the shoppe might be closed when we got there, but we decided to chance it. Boy, am I glad we did! I'm not sure if Shamane was the one who helped us, but she was so friendly and informative. We chose a blackberry galette, a pecan coffee cake muffin, a croissant and a jellied triangle with a french name that was loaded with zingy, sweet/sour flavor and sprinkled with sugar! What an unusual dessert experience. My friend enjoyed his muffin because coffee cake is his favorite. I saved the croissant for the next morning because I had a very early flight home, and the next morning it was still crispy on the outside and fluffy and buttery on the inside. But the highlight for me was the blackberry galette! The pastry was perfectly cooked with no soggy bottom and sweet/sour fruit and a sprinkling of sugar. I couldn't stop myself from eating the whole thing after offering my friend a bite and being thankful that he turned down my offer! The cherry on top was the Bhakti chai with its creamy, spicy goodness. I can't wait to get back to Boulder during the week to try the lunch because the bison pastie was kind of calling my name, but we had eaten lunch already so we made do with some of the best desserts I've ever eaten! read more

Their chocolate brownie is a religious experience - one of the best I've ever tasted in my life. I love flourless chocolate cake, and their brownie is on that level of delicious intensity. It's like being hit in the head with a sledgehammer of chocolate, and hoping the experience will never end. I'm not kidding you. The only other chocolate cake/brownie that even comes close is from a bakery in Amsterdam, but this is way closer. Run, do not walk, if you like chocolate. read more

This is the best place I've ever gotten sweets from! I absolutely adore this little hidden cafe! I always love getting their mocha dacquois and get so excited when it's in the cafe! Their pasties are also super delicious and I have yet to try anything from that cafe that isn't amazing!!! I highly recommend this and the staff is so wonderful and always has a smile on their face! A hidden gem in Boulder! I have only lived in Boulder for 3 years, but I have admittedly gotten into a rut of going to the same places all the time. During Thanksgiving week I was looking for a new bakery to get pies from, to deliver to my clients. I found Shamane's tucked back in a business park off of Foothills and Valmont in Boulder. Once I got there I realized that on top of being a bakery, they have a full coffee bar, lunch menu and ready made pastries. I had the chicken pot pie and a side salad. Good stuff! Our Daughter graduated from CU Boulder and since we're from out-of-state, I wasn't familiar with any of the bakers in the area. I perused Yelp and came across Shamane's Bake Shoppe. Shamane and I talked on the phone about what I wanted for the celebration and she walked me through her bakery options - cakes, cupcakes, mini-cakes, etc. Shamane then sent me photos of cake decor I might like but told me she was completely open to other ideas as well. The cake, cupcakes and mini-cake were ordered and paid for - sight (and cake tasting) unseen! Imagine my surprise when my husband walked through the door with a cake that exceeded my expectations! Not only was it BEAUTIFUL...it was delicious! Shamane's chocolate cinnamon cake was the perfect dessert to punctuate the most amazing day! We also ordered cupcakes and a mini-cake for a friend. A friend recommended Shamane's when I was in the neighborhood awhile back, and explained how to get there. It is artfully hidden away in the Wilderness (name of street) office/industrial area. I have been there several times since! The first thing one sees is a welcoming facade bedecked with well-arranged trees and flowering plants (in the warmer months...) Of course, as you can see, their specialty is wedding cakes. They are a "bake shoppe" after all. However, they do very well in the sandwich department also. I believe all sandwiches are the same price: $5.95. Compared to all other sandwich-serving establishments in Boulder that I have tried, they are one of the best. Bread is always fresh. The selection of sandwiches is good. I like the tuna wrap best. But someone who was dining at one of their outdoor cafe tables had a roast beef sandwich that looked excellent and she said that's what she usually orders. I don't eat red meat so can't try it myself, but it looked marvelous. And of course they have cupcakes of various kinds available. I tried a pecan one with a nutty cream cheese frosting and it was so delicious! Shamane's is very much worth finding...and right across from one of Boulder's beer breweries, if that makes it any easier. I'm pretty sure they close at 2pm though so keep that in mind. read more
