Mais au delà de l'ambiance (irlandaise) fidèlement restituée, il convient de noter que ce pub est le point de ralliement des étudiants Erasmus et que ce bar, normalement très anglophone devient en quelques heures une tour de Babel au cœur de Rennes. De plus, fidèle à la réputation de l'établissement qui occupait ces murs autrefois, le O'connell's s'efforce d'assurer un service de restauration avec un mot d'ordre simple : copieux. Des salades aux menus en passant par les sandwiches, l'objectif semble être de rassasier la clientèle et de lui faire apprécier son café ("Illy", les connaisseurs apprécieront). Lucky for us after a relatively short walk, we came across Matt Murphy's Irish Pub. I can't say how happy I was to see a pub style establishment that was open as it was pretty late. The food, beer, service was excellent and the owner behind the bar was extremely friendly and helpful as well. They appreciated my speaking and ordering in French; however, they were very cool and spoke to us in English as well with none of the stereotype attitudes we have all heard about. We kept it simple and had a cheeseburger, fries and the fish and chips. Overall the menu has a little for everyone with all the typical items you would expect to see at a pub. Comfort food for the perfect end to a perfect day. I mean we are in France!! C'est magnifique! Most of the kids from my program went here very often, as it was about two blocks away from our school, on rue Bressigny, which is a great street full of restaurants, kabobs, and patisseries we also frequented. We organized a thanksgiving party, concerts, and even a beer pong tournament here! The bar is often full of foreigners, so you should keep this in mind when considering your mood. And it's definitely nothing fancy. But the beer is cheap (sometimes cheaper for students) and you can get ten half pints in long box called a meter for a crowd! Also, bring memorabilia from your hometown or school and they'll hang it on their wall!

It's a classic French bar that skews younger than some of the pubs. I loved that they had charcuterie and the beers were priced very fairly. Pubs line the streets throughout Angers, so you have options. The reason this one was a good option was mainly that it wasn't far from Université-Catholique-de-l'ouest. It's also a bit brighter and livelier than some of the Irish themed pubs.
