If it's been a while since you've been to the "New" Shanghai Pine Garden, it's time to come back. Never been? It's time to pop in. This is a local institution for over 50 years and it deserves to be on everyone's list. Sure the inside vibe isn't fancy or totally cohesive. But the food stands up and the staff make you feel like home. Beef chow main has great flavor and the don't skimp on the beef. Garlic string beans are cravable. Mu shoo pork comes pre rolled and they don't skimp on the filling. And the sweet and sour shrimp is crispy even under the blanket of sticky sweet electric orange sauce that take you back to the 1970s. Get a table by the window and watch the people walk by with their Balboa bars and frozen bananas. Great value for the money as well. Its no wonder this institution birthed Wahoos Fish tacos. read more

We visited this restaurant for the first time in 40 years. When I lived on the island in the 70s this was a great Chinese restaurant. We moved away and decided to try it again today. Service was fine...there were many menus and choices so it was very hard to decide what to get. We settled on two special plates with two items each...one was lo mein and mu she pork and the other mongolian beef and kung pao chicken. These came with soup, rice, and spring rolls. The food was just OK - nothing among these were spectacular - just so-so. We were hoping for better - it's hard to find your "go-to" Chinese place anymore. We dream of the old days of moo-goo gai pan and egg foo yung. The most striking thing was the price....$47 with tip for two people. Just too expensive and I suspect this was why as we were there during lunch time on Sunday,, with lots of tourists on the street, this restaurant was empty. I have been coming here for 35 years and back when I first started coming here this place was special. They had wonderful red leather booths and great family seating and dimly lit dining room. The food had excellent flavor that made you never want to put down your fork. The service has stayed the same but now since the remodel I have been three times and it's not good. The food is bland and the seats are uncomfortable. It doesn't have the cozy feel it used to. We are back in town for our annual visit and we won't be returning to our once favorite place to grab dinner. read more

Shanghai Pine Gardens has been around for 20+ years. This is the first time we've been since they've changed/updated their menu. They're still super busy on a night with the Newport Beach Boat Parade, but they take reservations and we were able to squeeze our party into a cozy booth. While the food isn't what I would call "authentic", it was decent and we were hungry. The service on such a crowded and busy night was excellent, which is why they received 4 stars! read more

The recipes were probably lost, the way to prepare is probably lost, everything tastes ridiculous. Good hot and sour soup! I also found that there is such a thing as "too much service." We were constantly waited on the whole time, party of 5. The man was super, super nice, but i think theres a middle ground that he can find. Parking will be tough, by the way. Try to get lucky with street parking around the houses. It's actually comical how bad this place is. Ordered a FAMILY MEAL and it said it came with wrapped chicken, wontons, and egg rolls as appetizers. To clarify the appetizers included 1 wonton, 1 egg roll, and 1 wrapped chicken to share. Comes with a 2 cup portion of fried rice. But don't worry, you'll still receive 5 fortune cookies so no need to ration there. FYI: Panda Express is down the street and is available on door dash and Uber Eats AND they deliver. This is sad. Only spot on balboa island for Chinese food and we were not disappointed! Dined in on a quiet weekday and shared a meal with my bf. Everything we picked was delicious and was the perfect amount of food for two people. We started with the fried dumplings and for our main meal, orange chicken and pork fried. We did come about 1.5hr before closing, so wasn't very busy but there was plenty of people picking up orders thought out out 45 mins dining in. Stopped by after the Christmas boat parade and the food was delicious! We had black bean fish, foil Paper chicken, egg flour soup, sizzling rice soup, fried egg rolls, and dumplings. My family and I tend to come here during the holidays before walking around to look at the Christmas lights. This past weekend was the busiest because of the boat parade. We were a group of 6 and had to wait a little while for one of the big tables to open up. I must say that even during the busiest times, their service and hospitality is 10/10! We called the restaurant and reconfirmed the address and order and they assured us that it was on the way but it never came. Incredibly dissappointed. We came in to check this place out. My boyfriend has come here a few times and said he doesn't care for it that much. Which is unfortunate, because it's the only Chinese food place on the island. We ordered the Buddha's feast because I figured this would be on the safe side. You can't mess up that right? It's usually tofu, veggies and rice. Easy enough. At least we thought. So the Buddha feast at this restaurant doesn't include tofu. It's just vegetables and rice. Very plain and bland tasting. Didn't have any heat to it, but also seemed to be lacking flavor. It was just okay. The white rice helped give it something. But overall, we didn't get excited about this entree. Honestly, we got tired of eating bland vegetables. We only ate half of the dish and we shared it. The Orange chicken was not good either. Soggy and gross. Overall this place was a miss. Stay clear. read more

IMHO, the Wonton soup here is the best! The portion is generous, and it is chock full of meat, vegetables, and wontons!

I always eat here whenever I come every so often to run errands, the food is consistent and delicious which is why I come by every time I visit. Recent months I've noticed some changes in the staff, and one of the new servers has such a horrendous attitude. This server did not speak basic English to understand my order, and even when I pointed at certain menu items, I was returned with a rude glance and tone. The server was an Asian lady, seems to be from China in which she did not understand the dining culture of this neighborhood. She was also a bit blunt with her movements, and is very slow and unfamiliar with operations. Don't get me wrong, the food was still delicious as usual, but I do feel like this lady left such a bad taste in my mouth after the last couple of dining experiences here.
