Joe is a great swim teacher. Actually, a GREAT swim teacher. He is totally tuned into our four-year-old son (and our son is totally attentive to Joe's teaching). It is important to note that we tried other teachers the difference between Joe and his competition is really astounding; Joe is head and shoulders above. In addition, we sent our older son to him several years ago when he was first learning. He also loved Joe and we intend to have both sons learn from him for a lot longer! My two-year-old daughter's happy place has always been in the pool. She has never once cried in the water until our second lesson with Joey. She started crying when he ripped her out of my arms, and while she was crying he put her under water. She came up choking and crying and never calmed down. From that moment, she lost trust in him and became timid in the water during lessons. I had told Joey that it was ok to push her, since she is very confident in the water and I want her to learn new skills. But anyone who works with young children should know that they CAN NOT learn while they are hysterical, and it is so important for toddlers to have a positive experience in the pool so that they do not develop a fear of the water. I decided to give him one more chance since I had purchased a package of lessons. The next week, when he started grabbing my daughter away from me, I asked him not to do that right now and he proceeded to tell me that I should find a new swim school (and then ranted at me for several more minutes - I couldn't believe how unprofessional it was). I brought my 1 year old son here and was immediately put off by Joey telling my son that, "Mommy needed a tan!" I should have walked out immediately, but since you pay in advance, I figured I would stick it out and see how things progressed. My son was very unhappy about being in the water and Joey had no words of wisdom or guidance, just a lot of talk about his life and his problems. The next lesson my Uncle and his gf came to watch and at one point Joey made a comment about them kissing. Pay attention to my child IN THE WATER!! I wish there was a way to do a split review. The owner (Joe I think) was an amazing teacher. When we signed up and for our first lesson we were told he would be the teacher the whole time and we were super excited. You could tell he loved to teach swimming and was really good at it. My kids immediately picked up on his confidence in the water and trusted him from the moment they got in the pool. During the first lesson there was another woman that he was also teaching how to teach the class. You could tell it was her first time with the little ones (there were thee two year olds) and she was not very comfortable with them. For the second lesson however there was someone else teaching the class...It was the woman who JUST was there the last week learning how to teach. She was NOT ready and the kids could tell. My son and daughter as well as the other child went from loving the water to being afraid and not wanting to be let go of. Following this lesson I called and spoke to the owner who assured me that this was a one time deal and that he would be back in the pool the next time for the remainder of the lessons. He was there the next lesson...all great! The following lesson...not so much. The other lady was back and the kids were again freaked out. I have NO problem with people learning and wanting to lead the class but this should NOT be done until the person is ready. If I had known that the owner was not going to teach the classes I would have gone else where to start... read more

Given my daughter was only 2 1/2 when I enrolled her, the "hype" that I was given over the phone was that swim lessons were totally possible for children even younger than she was. Upon payment and some irregular scheduling we came to the first class, it turns out Joey the instructor (who credits himself with a lot of exxperience) does not teach the classes? There is a teenager, maaaaybe a little older, teaching 3 - 4 kids at a time, and the 30 minute lesson is actually divided between each kid. On a weekly basis my daughter probably saw 5 minutes or less of actual instruction. The rest of the time it was on me to work with her, and not to sound crass, but I wouldn't have paid $160 for lessons if I thought I could jump right in and teach her to swim. You are given 30 minutes of water time after your very short lesson to again "work with them". Upon registering I was told scheduling conflicts and makeup classes were no big deal, well when we actually had this occur that was not the case. We had an out of town birthday, we had rsvp'd to blah blah, when I called Joey before (like a month before) he said no prob. The week following this was our last lesson, I asked him when we could make up, and he said he would pro-rate me on another session, for the credit of one class. CLEARLY thats not what I had meant, my daughter learned some basics, but overall this season we will absolutely be going with a more qualified swim school. Oh and the claim to fame here is that Joey taught a 9 month old to swim...after our experience this is something I would much love to see! read more

I have to admit that there was some scheduling issues when we first started at Sharky's but we are so glad we stuck it out. Both of my sons love the water and Joey has helped to teach them safety techniques that go with being water babies. For my husband and I, we like Joey because he pushes our sons (even though they were 7 months and 3 yrs old when we started). Our oldest had lessons at another swim school when he was younger and I felt at times I was wasting money as some instructors were just playing in the water with him. We could do that for free. My three year old can swim unassisted and my 1 yr old can be dropped in the water and knows to grab the wall and hold on by himself which have been hits at family pool parties this summer. read more

I have been with Joey since Water Babies. My daughter started when she was 15 months old and now at 3.5 years she's turning into quite the good little swimmer. Joey is patient and understanding of each child's personal needs. I just started my 15 month old son last month and he is getting very comfortable in the water. Joey goes slow with babies but at the same time encourages water safety and helps them learn how to be in the water. Sharky's offers Private, semi-private or group lessons. Reasonable rates. Great scheduling! The new center is nice. The pool temperature is very warm. Everything is indoors so you don't have to worry about sunscreen. I also look forward to winter and not having to walk outside to the changing room. The locker rooms are great. There are ton's of showers, lockers, big changing area, baby changing station, and private changing area. The Timpany staff is also very friendly. read more

After reading reviews and being referred here by a friend, I enrolled my son for private lessons over the phone. I left a voicemail and a teenager (?) called me back to schedule the lesson. When we showed up for the lesson, Joey was in the water with another child and when he finished, I explained that we had scheduled a lesson over the phone. He was very apologetic and said that my son wasn't on the schedule and that I must have talked to his teenaged nephew and that there had been some miscommunications surrounding his scheduling recently. I was open to hearing this and went ahead and re-scheduled lessons for my son right there, in person, with Joey. I handed him a check and felt good about his customer service. We showed up the next week for the re-scheduled time and my son was again not on the lesson schedule at the sign-in desk. I went into the pool area and could not find Joey, or anyone to speak to about this. I called and left a message at the Sharky's number. I never got a call back, but we showed up the next week at the same scheduled time (the lesson time and date that I had made, in person, with Joey when I handed him my check) and again my son was not on the schedule. I just left at that point, very frustrated that plans for summer swim lessons had been ruined after three weeks of this! No one from Sharky's ever called me back. The only good news is that they didn't cash my check....though I did leave another message requesting that they mail me back my check. Overall, this was a totally disappointing situation...especially after getting my (water-averse) son geared up for swim lessons that never materialized :( read more

I enrolled my boys at Sharky's when they were 3 and 4 yrs of age. I witnessed my son was forced and hand held dunked his head into the swimming pool while he was crying. Both of my boys were traumatized from the bad experience at Sharky's. 4 years later, I finally convinced my boys and agreed to attend a swimming class after that incident. I brought my 2 yo. to Sharky's after reading the reviews on Yelp. Joey's approach was too aggressive for my liking, for example, wanting to dunk him repeatedly on the first day of class. Joey gave me a spiel about how my child is just testing me and I need to push him out of his comfort zone; I went along for a bit and suppressed my parental instincts, but I was not willing to see him so upset. We ended up withdrawing, at my expense, after 3 lessons because my son got to the point where he would cling to me as soon as he saw Joey enter the pool area. I honestly feel that what water confidence I has built with my son at our pool regressed as a result of his negative experiences with Joey. THE BOTTOM LINE: Sharky's was not the right approach for me or my child. Visit any prospective swim school prior to enrolling. read more

I'm not sure what the last review is all about, We love Joey and Sharky's swim school! The new location is great, they have an indoor pool and the parking is much better then waterbabies. We have been seeing Joey since he was at waterbabies and loved him and all his staff there as well (the parking was the only downfall and now at the new place its much better). Sharky's swim school also has huge locker rooms and with indoor pool swim lessons are now year round! He is a great instructor and very involved in the lesson, if you want your child to learn how to swim this is the place to go :) I always tell all my friends and family about this swim school, I LOVE it! read more

Here's my story: After 3 sessions at AVAC my three year old son showed no signs of improvement. They were okay and the facility was nice but he was still sitting in the water in a group of 6-8 kids watching them do the lessons. I had read mixed reviews of Sharky's and thought that we'd be better off at AVAC. But my son was really hesitant and they never pushed him there. After seeing a friend at Sharky's I decided to give it a shot. Joey is a miracle worker. My son, predictably, fought with me putting on his swim suit and screamed the whole way to his first lesson with Joey. I sighed and went along with it...what did I have to lose? Somehow after all this crying and fuss Joey made my three year old laugh by letting him pour water over his teacher's head. This had never happened!! We also were allowed to swim as a family for a little while after his lesson...which seemed to make a bit of a difference...we all had fun in the water without lessons of any kind. The second lesson my son said he didn't want to go to his lesson but didn't put up a fuss upon putting on his suit, getting in the car or getting in the water. I was surprised but assumed it was a fluke. He didn't cry during his lesson but was a bit resistant to go to Joey during the lesson, but we had no crying...no fuss...no problems. By the third lesson my kid put on his own swim suit and walked into the water all by himself. We played a few minutes before the lesson and when Joey called us to our lesson my son jumped on his father's back and said "let's go." I have NO idea how this happened....but THANK YOU JOEY! He did a complete 180! I know it's hard to believe but after one session (6 lessons) my kid loves to go to swim lessons, loves playing in the water and asks teacher Joey if he can go to him, jump off the wall into his arms, practice back floats. Simply amazing. I would describe Joey's approach as straight-forward and no excuses but still a lot of fun. He has never been harsh with my son and I've never heard him be so with any other child there. On the other hand, I don't mind if my son is pushed out of his comfort zone...I have seen what happens if you let him wait until he's ready...NOTHING! If my son doesn't like something, Joey's response is something to the effect of "well, I know you don't like it, but we're going to do it three times and you already did it once so you'll be done soon and then we can go to the monkey crawls and jumping you like." He constantly is telling my son (who is hesitant by nature) that he is proud of him...praising him and encouraging him. I have absolutely no complaints and am happy to drive halfway across town to get taught by Joey at Sharky's. In fact, my son fell into a cold hot-tub the other day and turned around and pulled himself out before I could even walk the three feet that I was away from him (i was RIGHT there). He cried a little and I asked if he was hurt or scared and he replied "I'm mad - that was cold!" He couldn't wait to tell Joey that he had gotten out all by himself and Joey told him that he was proud of him and acted all excited at the news. It doesn't get better than this! In a nutshell: I had my son at AVAC swim school for three sessions and we got nowhere...one session at Sharky's changed his entire swiming experience. I admit that he is a year older now so we can only give Joey 98% of the credit of this improvement - we will consider the remaining 2% my son being older and more confident. read more

We have been with Sharky's since June 2013 (so for almost a year) when my son was almost 6 years old. My son has made great progress over the past year. Prior to Sharky's, he had mostly swam a few feet with superman arms for 3 months at another swim school. I had put him in a few classes outside of that swim school (see my other reviews) and saw how much more he learned from the other places. Anyway, we ended up at Sharky's after a search and stayed because he's making good progress and is happy swimming there. The progress: Started as a boy who was comfortable in the water and can float a few feet. Two months into his lessons, he was swimming freestyle, turning onto his back to breathe. He was doing backstrokes, though his arms weren't going all the way back. This was in just two months there. One year later, his strokes are more refined now and he can do the dolphin. He can tread water, and his instructor Shelby (a great instructor, btw) has him treading for 10s in the deep end before swimming out to her. Scheduling: I think most complaints are about scheduling, rather than about the lessons. Personally, I haven't had problems with scheduling, but this year, I think scheduling should be much better with someone always there at the desk. For me, Sharky's has been very accommodating. Late last summer, I asked if I can do three session a week for 2 weeks, then later 2 sessions a week for a couple more weeks before going back to our once a week sessions. They fit me into the schedule. They've also helped with makeups, where other places did not allow any makeups. read more

I couldn't be any happier with my son (7 yr) and daughter (5) in a semi-private class with Joey. In just three lessons, their confidence and form has improved dramatically. We took group lessons in the past in the Ryland Park pool, but my daughter was always hesitant to put her head in the water. Of course the fact that she is older helps, but also that Joey is so easy going and makes swimming fun. My son was not making much progress in his freestyle and side breathing before we came to Sharky's. But now he swims so much better. I'm impressed that Joey places great emphasis on form and balance and found out today from a lifeguard that he created his own swimming approach and curriculum. I like how he is working on my son's strokes and ability to roll with his head up before introducing side breathing. I found out that Joey has something like 25 years of experience, worked with AVAC in the past, and also teaches adults from beginners who are afraid of the water to triathletes. I wish we started earlier with Joey. The people at the Sharky's office were very kind and enrollment was smooth. If you miss a lesson due to illness, you can make it up on a weekday. I appreciate that sessions are 8 weeks long and they are prorated if you join in late. I never took interest in AVAC where you have to pay a monthly fee and lessons are ongoing until you cancel membership. I also like the fact that the water is at a comfortable room temperature and kids can stay and swim for an additional $3. There is also a family dressing room that we take advantage of. As we were leaving, my son abashedly began to admire some of Joey's Valentine's day cupcakes. Joey was so kind to share them with the kids. read more

I have been taking my boys for lessons with Joey and his instructors for 4 years. One boy started when he was 4 months old, and the other at 6 months old. We stuck with Joey when he left his old location and moved to the new one (Timpany Center). The boys have had lessons with both Joey personally and his instructors. In all cases, they have been pleasant and have adjusted the lessons to focus on the areas that the boys need to work on. The boys have a "semi private" lesson, which means that they form their own group of 2, and the instructor takes turns teaching them over a 20 minute period. We have had numerous cases where we needed to miss a session due to travel or illness, and it has never been a big deal. Joey simply works with us to do a make-up lesson or credit us for the next session. Regarding the results: Both boys have benefitted greatly from these lessons. The older boy knows how to swim, float on his back, dive in, and tread water. The younger boy is working on swimming and floating on his back. Regarding the instructors: Each of the instructors has a slightly different approach when it comes to performing the lesson and motivating the kids. What works well for one kid may not work well for another. In our case, our older boy is very strong willed and responds well to a direct & no nonsense approach, so Joey himself performs our lesson. Bottom line: We are very happy with Joey, his instructors, and the results. We would not have been going there for 4 years otherwise. read more

My 4 yr old son has been attending Sharky's swim school for a couple of months now. My main concern was getting my son to be able to survive if he fell into a pool. He started out quite timid in the water. Joey built his confidence and now my son can float and swim about five feet. Perfect! Now every week my son is improving his stroke and increasing his water treading time. He loves working hard for Joey and swim class is the highlight of his week. Joey's prices are fair. My son has never liked to put his face in the water, or even get splashed in the face, but in his first lesson Joey had him taking a big breath and putting his face in. He has now had 4 lessons, and is gliding while kicking, and floating face-up for the entire alphabet song. Each lesson Joey incorporates a little pool safety too. At my son's age he can have a private or semi-private lesson, which is about the same price as a group lesson elsewhere. The lesson is 20 mins, and then he can play for 10 mins. My oldest daughter started with Joey from 2 1/2 years at Waterbabies. My goal was to have her learn how to swim. Joey is an excellent teacher. He was firm with her when needed and playful when appropriate. We stayed with him for three years and at five years old, my daughter was asked to join our local swim team. She is now eight years old and is one of the best swimmers on her team. I contribute that to Joey and his expertise and support in getting her ready to join the swim team. I now take my twin daughters to Joey's Sharky's Swim School. I want them to have the same opportunity as their older sister. Joey is great with them. He is firm enough to get them to listen and cooperate, yet playful enough that they are excited to see Joey for their weekly swim lessons. If you want your child to learn water safety and how to swim, then I highly recommend Joey. We have had to schedule make-up sessions and it has never been a problem. Joey has returned my calls in a timely manner. I have always viewed Joey as professional and having a true passion for teaching the kids about water safety and getting across the pool with confidence. Joey will not waste your money. Shelby is AMAZING! My four year old daughter absolutely adores her. It took only three lessons with Shelby and she was swimming like a fish. Shelby has exactly the right blend of kindness and pushing a student forwards. She makes everything a game! My friend's son fought tooth and nail to even get in the water, but with Shelby after just a few short weeks she had him happily splashing around her. I have noticed a difference in the administration since we began with Sharky's two years ago. I feel as though there's been some sort of turnover? Regardless of what it was, they now seem to be more organized, responsive, and present during the lessons. Someone always comes along to check on the kids, check in with the parents to make sure all is well, and they stay on top of scheduling. The pool is very warm too, which helps when the lessons are during winter. read more

The only reason I gave Sharkies 1 star is because my daughter does know how to swim now after 2 years of lessons. I started off at Water Babies school and truly enjoyed the lessons. Then Joey took over and moved the school to the Timpany Center. I only stayed as long as I did because my daughter was showing progress in her swimming skills. If you do not care about the level of professionalism displayed and just want your child to learn to swim, Joey will teach your child. I have never met someone as unprofessional as the owner, Joey. I do understand that everyone has bad days, except it seemed that every lesson was a bad day. He was constantly telling me his problems, how he was not feeling well, and how he was lonely. Just a weird situation. I think if I am paying for someone to give my child a lesson, they could at least pretend to be happy for the whole 20 minute time period. Just my opinion. When I pay over $1 per minute for a swim lesson, I expect to have that whole appointment time. Joey was about 5 mins late on multiple occasions and then when the next lesson show up he would take them on time, leaving our appointment to only be 15-17 mins long. On one occasion we arrived at our lesson on time, my daughter waited in the water for Joey for 20 mins. When he never showed I got my daughter out of the water and while she was changing I called him several times with no answer. As we were leaving he walked into the building. He said he just "forgot" about the appointment and apologized. We had to reschedule. Another time a girl called and cancelled our appt because there was an accident in the pool. She could not reschedule my time because Joey had to do it. She told me he would call, never received a call....the following week at our lesson I asked Joey if we could schedule the make up and he said he would call me......never received a call. Once again, I called to schedule the make-up and a boy told me Joey was not around and he would call me back.... We ended up paying for a session that we never made up because Joey never returned my calls. This was our last session with Sharkies. I will tell anyone that is looking for swim lessons the same thing. DO NOT expect any kind of professionalism because you won't find it here. read more

My husband and I LOVE Sharky's swim school! Joey is a fantastic instructor for our daughter. We started with him over at Water Babies when our daughter was 4 mos. old (she is now 13 mos.) . My Husband and I both swam and played water polo, so when we had our baby we couldn't wait to start her on swim lessons. But we want her to be a swimmer. If we wanted a lot of games and songs we would have taken her some where else. We love the atmosphere, structured lessons, and a focus on making our daughter appreciate and be comfortable in the water. We took a vacation recently and we got so many compliments. People were so impressed with her swimming skills that she already has. And when they found out her age they wanted to know when and where we started her swimming. They couldn't believe she was just one! Now that our family has seen her swim, her three cousins have started lessons with SSS and they love it as well! read more

I called and booked a first trial class with Sharky for baby-parent swim class. There was a teenager on the phone. When Friday came, nobody showed up at 4. The receptionist said the instructor is not there and they had no clue when he will come. I tried calling and nobody was answering. I left a VM. After half an hour waiting, we left. I'm very happy with Sharky's Swim School. My 5 year old son had been taking lessons elsewhere for over a year and still hadn't learned to swim. I wish I had moved him here sooner. He was swimming in the FIRST lesson at Sharky's. I kid you not. OK, not like an Olympian or anything ... but able to stay afloat, move forward, on his own for a couple yards. Pretty impressive for just one lesson. He also learned to float in the first lesson. Each lesson I see improvement. The difference, I think, is in the instructor. At some swim schools, the instructor is not an experienced, professional instructor, but often a teenager/college student (nothing wrong with that, but they don't have the same level of expertise when offering instruction). At Sharky's, the instructor has been doing this awhile so he knows what works and what doesn't work, always emphasizing technique and safety. Bottom line: he knows how to teach. And my son really loves going to class. He looks forward to it every week and is always asking if he can go to swim class today. He likes the teacher a lot and really giggles a lot during the goodbye song. Most of all, I think he just loves that he is swimming! :-) read more

My 3 yr old grandson just started with Coach Joey. On his first day, he was fearful of the water, crying for his grandma to "help me, help me". By the third class he was underwater kicking to reach the side of the pool and pulling himself out of the water (a definite life saver ). He floats to Coach Joeys calming sounds of the ABC, and now my grandson volitionally puts his face in the water and comes up smiling. Coach Joey coaches with no-nonsense confidence; his style empowers the kids to overcome their fear of water and to take risks with his support. I think Joe is probably a great instructor, but due to a few unfortunate experiences on his end, we only had the opportunity to have one class with him. His substitute instructors were kind, but inexperienced. I had chosen his program specifically because I believed that his classes would be taught by him. We were not informed prior to each class that he wouldn't be there, so each time we arrived we were disappointed to see that he wasn't going to be our instructor. He did offer a 10% discount on future classes, but I didn't want to lock into another 8 weeks of potentially not having him as our instructor. read more

My son looks forward to going to swim lessons and we really enjoy his teacher Miss Iris. I noticed some of the reviews saying that a teenager is teaching the classes and Iris may look young but she does a wonderful job. She goes over the lesson at the end and tells me what she thinks and how he is improving! I always rec. Sharky's and we love miss Iris no matter how old she is she has knowledge and is a terrific teacher! read more

Joey is awesome. We have been with him for 6 years. He was able to teach my timid son, and bossy daughter. Before Joey all I was paying for was tears. My two neighbors feel the same way and enjoyed their lessons, because Joey teaches child to swim.
