While I initially had a brief moment of pause regarding the cost--especially being on a retirement budget--the exceptional quality of the work and the sheer convenience of the service quickly put those concerns to rest. I actually put the value to the test. A friend mentioned he had his knives sharpened for a fraction of the price at a local hardware store. To see if there was a real difference, I invited him over for dinner and asked him to bring one of his high-quality, expensive Japanese blades that had been serviced there. There was simply no contest. A retail sales clerk who has been "trained" in knife sharpening in no way can match the expertise and precision of this mobile service. My knives, even a month later, are still cutting like razor blades, while his did not meet that cutting ability whatsoever. Beyond the sharpening itself, the maintenance tips I received were greatly appreciated. In my opinion, this service is a great value--the kind of thing we don't get much of anymore. It's a combination of expert skill, convenience, and a finished product that lasts. Being a busy deli restaurant our knives tend to get beat up. Ive tried my best to keep up but truthfully when you're self employed and are the chef there just isn't enough hours in the day. I booked an appointment with Scott not knowing what to expect. Years ago there was a knife sharpening company and the went belly up. Scott's process was streight forward. The appointment was booked and confirmed. I gave him my store knives as well as my high end personal chefs knives. I really appreciated his attention to detail. The very concerns i had he already noticed. I must also mention he double checked the angle degree for higher end knives. Granted he took a while but I also gave him about thirty knives. He didn't rush. You can tell he cares and he's passionate about what he does. He deserves every one of those five stars! read more

I've now had my knives sharpened at Sharpening House, Knifewear Vancouver, and most recently, by Scott at Sharpen Up. Knifewear was easily the worst- most expensive and I swear they forgot to sharpen them, I noticed almost no difference in my knives. Sharpening House and Sharpen Up both did great jobs on my mediocre knives, making them punch above their weight class. Both had great prices. But Sharpen Up came to my house. No drop off, no pick up, no parking, no hassle. I mean, how great is that? His truck folds down into a cool work bench and he just got to work in my driveway. Once our appointment was confirmed, Scott sent us a very clear email about what to expect when he arrived. I had questions and his response was prompt and succinct. He arrived within the predicted window and was very efficient and super friendly. Once finished, Scott demonstrated proper honing technique and gave me cleaning instructions to keep the knives in good shape for as long as possible (there are further care and storage guides on his website). After years of being disappointed that the only option for getting our knives sharpened seemed to be dropping them off at House of Knives for a week (why can't they just tell us when they would be sharpening the knives?! Scott is not quite a living national treasure ( he is Australian after all) but he has the heart and skill of a tradesman dedicated to his craft, a superb mobile set up and if you use him , I suggest you bring out more than less knives, axes etc .
