First of all New Hampshire is a beautiful state. I received a coupon to play the Shattuck for only $35 w/cart when I played Maynard Golf Course. I was also told that it is the 43rd hardest golf course in America, the 5th most scenic in New England and also in great shape - all (3) are correct. I had 13 pars, 2 birdies shot 80 and lost 5 golf balls from the back tees. The scenery is off the charts, the double burger and cold beer were awesome. In fact they have a deal there, whatever you shoot is the price of your first 16oz draft - so 80 cents it was. Call the pro-shop and ask them about that coupon, I bet they give you that price - worth the 80 minute drive from downtown Boston. read more

I decided to play here at the Shattuck golf club because I had a free pass. I was not disappointed. It is in pretty good shape with only a few rough spots. The course is definitely tough with many difficult and challenging shots however it is entertaining. Be prepared to shoot a high number. read more

Service was out of the ordinary because COVID regulations but the staff was available none the less. Got a delicious Ahi tuna bowl (that wasn't over priced). My friends were happy with their meals too. The bar area is nice and open with cathedral ceilings and the deck gives you direct views of mount monadnock. Beautiful spot. So far, so good! We'll update in November after the wedding. The Shattuck is a gorgeous location at the foot of Mt. Monadnock. We're getting married here in early November. The price is right, the place is gorgeous, and we're pretty excited. Their standard package includes a served buffet with plenty of choices. The reception hall has a gorgeous, wooden cathedral ceiling. Warm ivory walls and simple sconces are nice touches. We're hoping for warm weather so we can get married on the stone terrace. Turns out this place used to be a monestary, hence the terrace, and the cathedral ceiling (and the bell on the front of the hall!) 11/28/07 Update We got married here on the 10th and it was great! The staff was all super friendly and helpful, the bartenders upgraded to the better brands upon request at no charge, everyone loved the location. We are so, so happy with it! read more

This review is for golf course only. I played for the first time this fall. The staff is very friendly and the location a scenery is stunning, especially in the fall. The course is in good shape, although some of the tee boxes are a little rough. With all that being said, I would strongly recommend NOT playing here unless you play the course all the time. The problem is that the course is nearly impossible to play unless you know the course. I am a decent player. I shoot mid to low 80's. The problem with this course is that every fairway is impossibly narrow. Then you have a few yards of rough, then woods or water. Once you are in the woods you are done. The greens are all postage stamps and if you miss them you probably won't find your ball. All of this results in a very slow pace of play as well. I really wanted to love this place, but it is comically difficult to play without a solid knowledge of the course. read more

The Shattuck is the ultimate test of your golf game in New England. This course is a gem and if you come with a game plan and an ability to hit all your irons, you will like it too. Nice venue for functions and the food is good. However, if you're there after dark bring a flashlight because the parking lots are not lit.

Let me start by saying everyone we ran into at this course was very nice and accommodating. What I didn't like because they charged us $20 a person for the carts. 40.00 for two players is totally unacceptable. We typically pay $10 $12 at the most for a cart per person. Now to the course, the cart paths are unbearable and have boulders on every stretch of the path, management before we even started playing apologized for the design and the condition of the course. Excessively difficult with very poor hole layout and selection. The greens were excessively fast and everything else was rundown. No markers to clearly indicate the direction of the next hole. I typically lose one or two balls for 18 holes, I lost 20 balls to go to that narrow fairways, tiny greens and excessive brush and mud everywhere. Not a fun place to play, the only thing they have going for them is beautiful scenery. read more

Had a great time at this course. I used a Groupon and the value was great. The course is in pretty good shape, some of the tee boxes could use some TLC, but the greens were very nice. It's considered one of the more difficult courses in the country which I can confirm. The greens are small and the course is tight. I would play here again. While it is a long drive from Boston to get to Shattuck, the views of Mt. Monadnock are worth it. I can confirm that this course is beyond difficult, I lost 2 dozen balls. Almost every tee shot must be perfect, or its out of bounds, in the drink, or lost in the woods forever. Regardless, we had a great time, saw some beautiful views, and played a little golf. When I am more on top of my game, I will be back. BTW, they have five different tees to play, since we had men and women in the group, we all hit from the middle (white) tees. but after the typical women's red tees, they have gold tees, which seem great for kids or beginners. read more

This course was a piece of Shattuck. Yes, my vocabulary has actually changed after playing it. A group of friends and I drove 2 hours to go play this course because we had heard it was challenging (which it was) and really nice (which it DEFINITELY WAS NOT). A large portion of this course was in poor conditions, where some of these parts had broken and running sprinkler heads constantly pouring water onto already waterlogged portions of the course. Many of the fairways were nothing but rock-hard ground and burnt out grass where u couldn't even tell if you were on the fairway or the rough. Sand traps used sand that looked like it was imported straight from the beach, with the large sand granules. This is in addition to every sand trap looking like it hadn't been raked by a grounds crew in ages, with water runoff tracks being present more than I had ever seen on a golf course. Yardages were not clearly or properly marked in most places, and seemed to be inaccurate in others, making it impossible to determine what club should be used. Basically, if you live close, and want a low-quality course to play on, by all means, go play this course. But if you live far away and you want to go play some amazing course or something that you heard was nice, I would find somewhere else to play. Use your money to fund a course where your money will actually be used to maintain it. read more

Two of my friends and I arrived at Shattuck with a supply of scuffed golf balls and, yes, a small degree of anxiety. We'd heard it was a killer course with virtually no forgiveness. Nevertheless, we wanted to give it a shot; we were up for an adventure. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very friendly staff. They gave us helpful and practical advice on how to approach a couple of holes, and how to manage the entire course. Yes, many of the fairways are narrower than they are on most courses. So, if you're used to gripping it and ripping it you'll have to adjust at Shattuck. This course is all about planning ahead, playing within your limits, and thinking about every shot. The greens were in excellent condition. They undulate but reasonably so. The fairways provide a good lie. The roughs are challenging but fair. Check out the course website before playing. It gives you an accurate and helpful perspective on the course and how to play it. The course layout and scenery are impressive. Each fairway is visually isolated so there are no lateral distractions. Mt. Monadnock appears throughout the 18 holes. The best approach to playing Shattuck, and having a good time is to choose the tees that are most appropriate to your skills...and then, perhaps, moving one set forward. Power golf and Shattuck don't fit well. Smart golf, on the other hand, will assure an enjoyable experience. We're in our mid-60s and have handicaps between 16-20. We're decent golfers but not all-stars by any means. We played from the white birch tees, and had a great time. Oh, and each of us lost fewer than 5 golf balls. Play Shattuck with the right attitude, and you'll be pleased with the results. read more

I had such a great time at this course over the weekend. It was visually spectacular with great scenery of Mount Monadnock. I didn't catch his name, but the golf course designer and pro greeted us and spoke with us for almost 20 minutes about how to play the course. It really made us feel at home since it was our first time there. It is a challenging course, in a good way. You can't pull out your driver on every hole and try to bomb it out there. This course relies on strategic play and placement. A very nice balance of skills is needed to do well. I will definitely be back to this course when I return to New Hampshire. read more

If you want beautiful views and abundant wildlife, this is the place for you. As far as the course goes, it was the toughest I've ever played. The fairways were tight with countless natural hazards (swamps, streams, sand traps, bunkers, hills, water in the fairways). Not only were the fairways tight, the landing areas were small and often placed where your next shot was extremely challenging. Any ball hit into the rough was lost due to the heavy vegetation. A ball that just rolled off a sloping fairway into this vegetation more often than not was gone. The greens were coming off a tough winter and still needed a lot of TLC. Three greens were in fact, closed. This is an extremely hilly and long course. Walking 18 holes while negotiating the landscape and distance between holes would be difficult. In summary, Shattuck well deserves it's ranking as one of the 50 toughest courses in the country. However, this was a frustrating course to play for average golfers. Although the scenery was outstanding, the actual golf experience was not fun. Bring a lot of balls and take a cart! read more

If you are looking for a challenge, it's here. Accuracy off the tee is a must. I found myself hitting many hybrids and a few 3 woods off the tees. There were a couple risky drivers hit. Miss the fairway and it's gone. When you find the fairway the challenge continues. the greens are very small and well protected. The fairways and tees were not good. Most fairways had large bare spots. The tee boxes were hairy, bumpy and uneven. The greens on the other hand were excellent. They were about as fast as I would expect given the drought this year. The Shattuck is in the best condition I've ever seen in three years of playing. The course is technically challenging and visually spectacular. It helps that we picked a perfect day to play: Partly cloudy with temps in the high 70's and a light breeze. Golf carts are ... experienced ... which seems appropriate for riding some very rugged cart paths and what I understand is the most linear feet of bridges on any course in the US -- an adventure in itself. The yardage book is a must-have, and well worth the $5. Don't expect to break handicap here; most of the course is green or bust, and the 130 slope off the white tees is an understatement. read more
