I decided to play here at the Shattuck golf club because I had a free pass. I was not disappointed. It is in pretty good shape with only a few rough spots. The course is definitely tough with many difficult and challenging shots however it is entertaining. Be prepared to shoot a high number.

Nice venue for functions and the food is good. However, if you're there after dark bring a flashlight because the parking lots are not lit.

The clubhouse was a small unassuming building with (surprise) nice locker rooms for use. The pro shop had all the standard items such as clubs, balls, and other golf paraphanelia for sale. The price for two of us for a round with a cart was 46 dollars, not bad at all. The course was well kept and had a few challenging holes, at least for this newbie to the sport. The greens were consistent throughout and the fairways were wide and rolling. Did I mention I hardly saw anybody else out on the course? No one hurrying us along. The closest group were three holes behind us. That's nice on a sunny saturday afternoon. It's too far out of the way to go for just the day, but if I'm ever in the area, I'll definitely be back.

The course is beautiful, with a manageable front and long back 9 (6500 yrs) from the middle tees. The course is open and even high handicap golfers will not lose many balls; there are really only a few spots on the course that are truly out of bounds. The staff is typically very friendly, Jeremy who manages the bag room is particularly nice. The pros are all great too. The whole place is well maintained, as they do host PGA (junior/womens) events from time to time. The greens play very fast towards the end of summer, and some of them slope in ways that will really frustrate anyone. Price-wise, the place is on the upper end if you have no college affiliation (about 140 or so) but is exceptionally cheap for students (35 dollars) so definitely a place to visit if you are in the area and still in school. The course truly cannot be recommended enough, and it offers some exceptional views of both the Williams College campus and the surrounding areas.

You could play it the rest of your life and never tire of it. The club is so extremely welcoming. They make you feel like a member. The locker room, the grill, the patio are all wonderful. I didn't expect much so I was even more surprised at the quality of the course and the country club feel. It's a bit more manicured and open than I thought it would be given the location in rural western MA. The 11th is very picturesque, with a winding brook framing the right side and then cutting across in front of the green. The 15th was also very pretty but a good bit more challenging. The closing 18th is a bit of an odd hole where I had to fight through geese and their legions of droppings but somehow fisted a wedge onto the green and made birdie (it was the only hole where the fairway wasn't in good condition). Looking at satellite images, I guess the course had some serious burnout issues at some point but everything looks good now and was quite lush and consistent when I played.

I have played Canterbury a number of times but on July 10, 2018 when I checked for our 2:00 pm tee time I asked about the forecasted thunderstorms. I was told there were no storms expected. My phone app disagreed and we stayed alert. Around 5:15 when we were finishing #12 we could see storms rolling in from the west. On 13 we heard the first thunder clap. My phone weather app indicated lightning only 6 miles away. No warning horns. We played 14 and before heading to 15 and the way back the thunder was on us and my weather app told us seek shelter lightning was only 2 miles away. We immediately started back for the clubhouse passing other groups who were still playing. Still no warning horns. As we came in by the tee on #2 a foursome was teeing off and still no warning horns. By the time we got to our cars it was clear that this was a microburst. The sky exploded with tropical winds breaking tree limbs and throwing debris everywhere. One staff member was securing carts but no one in the pro shop was doing anything to help get players off the course. The storm was so severe that trees were down on the access road and 93N was at a standstill. It looked like winter with an inch of hail on the highway.
