Greg A, you reviewed the neighbor bar, Lee House. I assure you that the Shaw House(brick) will not be blown down with a gust of wind.

What a gem find. Don't let the front door scare you. The best meal we've had in the Alleghenies.

Indeed you'll find that a lot of the patrons seem to be stopping by more often to purchase 6 packs to take out. Towne Tavern is basically a beer guzzling dive bar and unfortunately not one of a higher order, but being situated in Clarendon, a remote sort of has been, "seen better days" type of town, one really couldn't expect much more. I've been here a few times over the years, and because of its generally depressing "down on your luck" atmosphere, haven't really got much good to say about it. Though not all that bad looking on the inside, the customers it attracts tend not to be the most savory of characters. The bar and, for that matter the town itself has a reputation for having had plenty of bar room brawls and street frights, but since it is a small town I think that such isn't all that frequent; you just hear about them more often. And if there is a fight, most of those seem to have been between relatives, a that fact may not be too surprising since everyone in Clarendon seems to be related in one way or another. Indeed, though I can't vouch for the factual truth behind it, Clarendon has long had a rumored local reputation for incest even to the point that one of the most commonly told jokes about it is that Clarendon guys look forward attending their annual family reunions as it's one of the best places for them to pick up chicks. If you go here, your best bet is to park in the dirt parking lot along the side of the tavern as on the main street you might be subject to some logging or oil well truck traffic that often have damaging chains either dangling or swinging from their sides. On the good part, and my reason for going two stars instead of one, is that I've always been well treated at Towne Tavern, but then again having grown up nearby, I know most of the people.

Walking in here is like walking into a time warp sending you back at least 60 years. Everything about the place is out of date including the menu items and specials. I had the broiled fish which was served overdone, dusted with a low quality paprika, served in a bowl of what was basically water with no lemon, tartar or other accompaniment except for a creamy coleslaw which, I confess, was rather good but not good enough to offset the horrors of my main course. The service is friendly, polite, but disorganized and confused. My coffee came served in a mug from a nursing home which didn't exactly add to my enjoyment, but from the looks of some of their customers they may well have been on release or refugees from that nursing home.

I usually avoid ordering crab cakes anywhere but where I think they'll be good. I didn't expect excellent crab cakes in Kane, PA but I was wrong. This place makes some of the very best tasting crab cakes I have ever eaten. They were definitely on the small side, making their price a little questionable, but the flavour made it worth it. Not much filler and they were broiled to a perfect brown color. The mashed potatoes were also good (home made) and the salad was just fine. Hubby ordered a steak and the flavor was great. It was cooked a little longer than was requested, but still an enjoyable meal. The best part is that, the next time we come through town, I won't think twice about taking the kids in. There is a restaurant on one side and a bar on the other side (with pool table in the back). I will definitely return..

UN BE LIEVABLE…read more The food, the service, the value, the staff! Hard to put into words how cool this night was at the bar as a solo dude here in PA on business. They had cheese, chicken and steak options on their quesadillas. I asked if they could do grilled shrimp instead. "YEP" It was the largest, chunkiest, tastiest quesadilla I've ever had! They tossed in sour cream, salsa and pico without batting an eye or adding cost to it. I asked the gal that emerged from the kitchen if she was the chef. She was indeed the saint who made my quesadilla, so I was able to let her know I had just consumed the nectar of the Tex/Mex gods in her offering. The bartender/my server was the nicest, most easy going person ever. He could be selling airplanes for Boeing but somehow he's here doing his craft. I've traveled the US and have gone to literally hundreds of sports bars/restaurants etc. It's hard to describe when you don't encounter a negative person or scene in any conversation or request. If I lived around here I'd sleep in the parking lot so I don't miss a meal or drink oppo. If there were 10 stars I'd give it. I've left some harsh reviews so I don't type the above lightly. To the owners of this patch of golden humanity..... THANK YOU! Why? For finding and hiring great people who care about their work, products and guests. If you're reading this and deciding where to grab a drink or quality food, -----stop here and thank me later.
