First-Hand Experience: I've been to see them at home a few times and my old friend played for them which I'll tell you about in a minute. I have masses of respect for Barnsley and they have a fantastic support base and a great stadium, but the team itself has always been a little uninspiring to me, and so I'll give them a 3 rather than a 4. I did enjoy seeing them live though, every single time. Formed in 1887, I have a personal connection to this team because my Dad's team (Milan FC based in Oxford) once had a player named Taggart, who smashed the ball so hard off the field one time, that it knocked me off a wall and winded me. That same guy had a brother, who was the captain of Barnsley, and the captain of Northern Ireland. He has gone down in history as one of the greatest Barnsley players ever. He even led them to the promised land of the Premier League, where they performed badly. Now they are down in the third tier of English football, but they have an impressive 23k stadium and hope that they will get back up there at some point. They are known as the Tykes because they go around spreading their seed and having children with as many women as possible. And they play in red and white. They once recently knocked Rafa's Liverpool (my Liverpool) out of the FA Cup. I respect the club a lot and they have a great stadium but as they've never really made their mark on the game, I'm keeping them as a 3.

The majority of the stadium was redeveloped in the 1990's, so has a fresh, but traditional feel to it. This of course is barring the West Stand, which by the looks of it has only recieved new seats in a large number of years! Oakwell also encompasses several smaller venues on the site which form the facilities of the Barnsley FC Academy. These include an indoor training pitch, smaller stadium and several training pitches. As an away fan, you'll be seated in the North Stand, which is the most recent development of the stadium. I believe it houses approximately 6000 fans, but rarely is the full allocation given to most teams. The facilities are good, but nothing out of the ordinary. The usual food and drink options for a football ground are available. Alcohol is served on matchdays, although if you are a local rival or a team known to cause trouble, expect it to not be served on yours! For drinking before the match, the safest place is probably at the Barnsley Metrodome, a few mins walk (up the hill) from the away end. Nice ground compared to many, worth a visit.

They have a large clubhouse/function too, for presentations and its also available for hire with a fully stocked bar and catering if needed. The club is in Top Mossley which means at the top of the hill to you outsiders and the floodlights from the ground can be seen from the rest of the town so there is no chance you can miss it. First-Hand Experience: I'm lucky enough to have seen Sheffield Wednesday live on 6 or 7 occasions, including in the very old days down in Oxford, and of course at their home stadium more recently. Which was very sad for me. This team is a brilliant team that is a giant of the English game. I have to separate them from their stadium which was a death trap and a heartbreaking place for any Liverpool fan. They were formed in 1867 and so are one of the oldest teams in the world. They're currently in the second tier but are a fallen giant, along with Sheffield United, and belong back in the big time as soon as possible. They were originally a cricket club which is kind of boring. The club played only on Wednesdays, hence the name of the team now. They play in boring blue and white. The Arctic Monkeys, Gary Cahill, Paul Carrack, Jarvis Cocker, Michael Palin, Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and Def Leppard all supposedly support the Owls. Yes they're nicknamed the Owls, how adorable. They have won the Premier League 4 times, in 1903, 1904, 1929 and 1930, so some really amazing pedigree there. They won the League Cup as recently as 1991 when they were still a top team, and they won the FA Cup in 1896, 1907 and 1935, so their trophy cabinet is definitely full and impressive. They've spent 66 seasons in the top division, but not since the year 2000, so hopefully they'll be back soon. The reviews here that are for the stadium need to be moved to the new stadium listing. They once beat Geri Halliwell 12-0. I'd rather join her than beat her. Chris Waddle, Des Walker, Marc Degryse, Paolo Di Canio, David Hirst, were a few of the legends here. Sheridan, Harkes, Wegerle too. Americans before Americans were cool. Just don't ever go and watch them on a Tuesday or a Thursday. It'll end badly.

The pitches are state of the art rubber-crumb synthetic grass, which is a revelation in comparison to the older carpet like all weather surfaces. We've never had a problem playing on these in all weathers, rain, baking sun, frost, snow! Providing you have half decent footwear, it's fine whatever the weather. The centre seems very popular for kids parties and often we've seen groups of kids playing on the pitches and their parties being set up in the bar area. The only down side is, you pay for the quality, whilst it isn't too far out of the way (and they sometimes have offers) there are definitely cheaper options out there!
