Shiki Sushi is a solid go-to sushi spot in the Valley! The rolls actually hold their form and don't fall apart.....which, honestly, shouldn't even need to be a compliment, but so many sushi places these days fumble that basic detail. So, bonus points to you, Shiki! The menu is expansive, with plenty of specialty rolls beyond the usual suspects. The fish is fresh, the rice is soft (though I wouldn't mind just a touch more vinegar in the rice), and overall, it's a great spot. Now, the main reason I'm writing this review: the to-go/pick-up situation. I've never dined in, so I can't speak to the sit-down experience, but the takeout process? It's nothing short of a MESS. While the staff is always super friendly and helpful ONCE you're able to talk to someone, it's clear they're either always understaffed or just don't prioritize having someone up front to manage the chaos during busy weekend evenings. I've ordered from this location 5-6 times, and while the actual packing of the orders is fantastic--seriously, they include chopsticks (more on that later), generous soy sauce, plenty of napkins, wasabi, and ginger, it's getting to your food that's the problem. If it's busy and there are people waiting for tables, be prepared to awkwardly squeeze your way to the front and wait... usually around 10-15 minutes just to catch the attention of someone. Sometimes, they'll immediately grab your order, which is great. Other times, they ask you to wait while they seat the next party--even if your food is clearly sitting in plain view, labeled and ready to go. (Don't come at me for not just grabbing my order! The food is kept behind a desk area and it feels wrong to riffle through as if I am an employee!) I get that there's a flow to manage, but when you're just trying to grab takeout, it's frustrating to jump through hoops. If I'm in a hurry, I skip ordering from here because I know it'll be a hassle. And now, back to the chopsticks. These are hands down the best "single-use" chopsticks I've ever gotten from a sushi restaurant. They even come with illustrated instructions on how to use them, which is such a fun touch. Shiki is the OG spot for the people in this community. I've been coming here to eat for over 20 years. Unfortunately, as the years went by, the roll sizes gradually got smaller, the real fun energetic vibe died off and the prices have increased. I've always been a fan of their Rolls Rolls cut roll and I ordered it today and it too, got like 25% smaller than 10 years ago. As customary to me, I replaced the California roll filling with spicy tuna filling. On top, you get tuna chunks with diced tomatoes mixed with their delicious thousand island-esque sauce. The roll withstood the time, the slight shrinkage and the price increase to actually still stay a very delicious roll. Each bite was truly yummy, with a lot of flavors hitting your taste buds for a home-run. The service there was okay, but the ambiance though requires improvement. Its 1 pm and the place inside is pretty dark. Also, didn't love the $31 price tag of the roll after spicy tuna upgrade and after tax and tip. Way too much. For that money, I'd consider something like Katsuya sushi for next time. Rolls Roys Roll though solely as a food item--definitely solid and kicks butt! read more

I used to like this place a lot and would go there with my friends whenever I feel like getting sushi. They had nice and fresh selection of sushi and other dishes that everyone could choose from. Then I moved and found other places for my sushi urges. Yesterday I remembered about this place and offered to go and enjoy our dinner with my family. It was a GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT! I am not sure if they have a new chef, or what... nothing tasted good... My tuna tartare was not fresh, had no taste and consisted of 50% of diced tomatoes. I could not even eat half of it! Sushi rolls were of a good size but tested nothing like before.., overall we left with the feeling that we wasted our money and a nice dinner opportunity. The only good thing was garlic edamame and a friendly service. Sadly, I will never return to this place again. read more

I am a fan. I ordered udon tempura, which is not a dish I often have. It was a big steaming bowl with a load of noodles and a full plate of vegetables and one shrimp. Yes, that would've been enough, but greedy me also ordered the beef gyoza. I usually have pork, but this one was exceptionally flavorful and crispy. A thoroughly enjoyable event, and my partner had an equally pleasant experience with his garlic edamame and a sushi roll that our waiter suggested but I was too busy eating to hear the name. I haven't been here in a while and i have missed this place! Very relaxed ambiance, all the staff are friendly and help you (you don't have a specific waiter that does everything for you, it's more of a team effort). Food was delicious! There were so many options that looked amazing, it was hard to not over order. Shiki has such amazing rolls that for the first time I didn't get any sashimi, nigiri, or hand rolls. Most of the rolls were solid, one was a bit bland. Yelp advertises this place provides free miso soup, though that was not my experience, perhaps because we were at the bar? Not sure. This is like, McDonalds supersize-me sushi. Everything here is quantity over quality. Massively Huge rolls with mushy fish. Lemon on certain rolls I like but these were so thick it's like they expect you to eat the peel.. Every bite is HUGE. Nigiri have massive ball of rice and all of the fish was subpar but for high quality price. The server was very confused when taking our order also.. I had to go over what we ordered 4 or 5 times. She didn't know the difference between types of fish and she kept mixing up Tamago and salmon egg thinking it was the same thing. Salmon egg wasn't fresh and tasted fermented. Overall the price was way too high given the quality of what we got. There's so many other better and cheaper spots to choose from around the area. Also forgot to mention, there were some good things. Yellowtail belly was very tender and salmon belly was good. The spicy tuna crispy rice was good. But everything still so big you could barely fit in your mouth. I'd say this meal was definitely not worth what I paid for it and will not be coming back. read more

I've genuinely been coming to this restaurant for 15 years, and I adore their rolls. They're consistently tasty and have great quality fish. However I'm extremely disappointed with their chef assorted sushi dish. It comes with a tuna roll and different kinds of nigiri. I find it so annoying that they always include the egg as part of the selection and they use genuinely the worst pieces of the fish which are chewy, discoloured, still has parts of the skin etc. I expect higher quality from them than ayce sushi places but it's not.... especially since it's 5+ dollars for one piece! If you want nigiri seriously don't get it from here it's a ripoff and I'm super disappointed. Just stick to the rolls... read more

This review is a long time coming, since I have been going to Shiki Sushi since they opened. I think they have been open for at least 15 years. I know this extensive menu from front to back. Their sushi is always fresh with nice sized cuts of fish. Their fusion rolls are so delicious and creative. Try the caterpillar roll, rolls royce, and the Ventura roll. Even though this is a sushi joint, their cooked Japanese food is just as amazing! I love their curry, yakisoba noodles (with beef or chicken), broiled collars (salmon or yellowtail), tempura, shrimp shu mai, calamari, teriyaki, hot stone options, literally everything is great. I eat or order take out here at least twice a week and never hesitate to take a guest or 20 when the occasion arrives. Big shout out to Riski and staff who always extend top notch service! The ambience is nice with semi outdoor space, sushi bar, or tables. The ambiance is nice for a dinner date or a business lunch. Major props to Shiki Sushi! read more

Though previous recent reviews were a sign, a friend wanted sushi for dinner somewhere other than our usual. Had been here in the past before the change of ownership. Yes it is loud when busy. Conversations just overpower the jazz in the room. Servers nevertheless made their best attempt to communicate as efficiently possible. The menu feels like your average roll house that has one or the other same topping, filling, or sauce, only to a new extreme. Spicy Tuna on crispy cakes was not bad. Not too spicy, not bland. The Baked mussels were ok. In addition to mayo and probably white wine, they have melted cheese which was not horrible but unnecessary. The seafood parts in general just did not taste great. Baby scallops and langostino were chewy and rubbery. Rolls come fat with filling to rice ratio but loosely rolled thus falling apart upon pick up is easy. Rice seasoning tasted ok. The one saving grace of the meal (that the servers either forgot to order from chefs or left waiting at the bar) got a proper tasting order of octopus, the main pieces topped with a strong dab of Yuzu hotsauce on each. Could do with less or none at all when the octopus flavor is good as is. Hot tea was served in large sized handle mugs, my only other positive note. Sadly to sum it up as others mentioned.
