It did NOT disappoint! I had a soup here tonight called "Kuy Kub" with the most amaaaaaaazing rich, chocolate brown* pork broth, bits of pork cracking and offal... yep, offal. I'm not really a girl that goes for offal... well hardly ever. But a few years ago I accidentally ate tripe and exclaimed "what kind of seafood is this?"... and ever since then I have decided maybe I can be a little more open-minded about offal since I liked the strange "seafood", lol. The offal in this soup was really good. I tried to just enjoy the flavours without thinking too much about what I was eating, in the interests of having an authentic Thai dish, haha! We also shared a very spicy, lime-intensive seafood salad which was deee-licious! They also serve all the usual suspects you find in western restaurants, pad thai, green curry, etc. But they also have this menu of traditional items that sets them apart, if that is what you're looking for. This place is not trendy. It isn't chi-chi. It's not even shabby chic or "cool" in anyway whatsoever. It's a little run down hole in the wall that serves really delicious authentic Thai street food, so if that is what you're after, this is it, 100%. * it's blood!

For 15 years I've been enjoying that feeling of having a special place thats pretty much perfect. Where the guys knew me and the food was way above the rest. Makoto was the best Sushi Train I'd ever been to and it was fully 1 minutes walk down the road. So I went a lot, I mean at least 800 times. The value was there. My favourites were the tempura king prawn hand roll, the king prawn and omelette hand roll and the most basic of all, the salmon sushi. Thing was, all the offerings were fresh generous and delicious. Last year a new owner came in. You don't need to read anymore if you, like me, know what that always means. The first to go was James who had been there from the start. Most of the staff went because they put in the ubiquitous computer screen ordering system. Then they removed all the old prawn dishes. All of them. Now you are lucky if you get a pre prepared frozen crumbed prawn covered in a mayo mess. Then they reduced the sizes of every dish on the train so the salmon was much smaller. All my favourites disappeared or were scrimped. Then they put all the prices up. The next thing to go was the queue, then the regulars stopped going. Now there's barely anyone there at 12 noon when there used to be a wait for ten to fifteen minutes. I'll still go now and then because its still fresh and its still close. The really sad thing is that I see people there who never saw what it used to be - they probably think that this is a pretty good place, they don't know what it was like. Sigh. Update October 2018 The tempura king prawns hand rolls are back!!!! The other day they had the old cooked prawn and mayonnaise gunkan on the train, its not back full time but at least it made an appearance! The salmon sashimi is no longer scrimped upon. Its back to its old size. Back to 5 stars for the prawn hand rolls alone. Thank you God, I really missed those things. And they are still on the blue plates, which have been bumped from $3.60 to $3.80 - so what - 20c!! Two words - yaa. hoo.

However this does come at a price and you will certainly be paying for it. They have great Salmon sashimi but my favourites come off the menu, not the train and they are the omelette and king prawn hand roll and fisherman's soup. The Agedashi tofu ain't bad either ! I only wish less people knew how good this place is as sometimes the queue is pretty long.

The sushi rolls on the menu looked appetizing so decided to go for Spicy Waka Roll (assorted sashimi, shallots, spicy sesame sauce). Food was prepared pretty quickly. More people started coming in as soon as my dish arrived. The combination of salad (mix of green and red leaves) and sashimi are amazing. The sashimi were fresh and the portion was pretty good even though it might seemed small when it is rolled over and cut into 8 pieces. The greens were crunchy and fresh making the whole dish chewy. Besides that the spicy sesame sauce, mayonnaise on the side and sprinkles of red peppers were a good combination. It has tangy aftertaste and I skipped the wasabi to have a better taste of the sauces. Price wise it was on the moderate level. At least the 8 pieces of sushi were pretty filling as the sushi master included quite a bit of rice. From the waiters conversation, it was pretty clear that they are Japanese and I did confirm with them. This place might be small but it definitely provided some authentic sushis.

The salmon was expertly presented, melt-in-your-mouth delicious, bathed in its citrus marinade and topped with generous portions of crunchy green onions and greens. The beef carpaccio looked amazing, too, although we did not get a chance to try it. We also had the decent scallops and the mediocre Waka roll, neither of which I particularly recommend, but the salmon carpaccio... You must make the trek to this restaurant if you're in Manly -- it may be the best dish I had during my 8-day trip to Sydney.

In these days it's me taking my mum around for food - how times and roles have changed. Ozeki Sushi in Hurstville has both the sushi train and hot pot train although i'm 94.7% sure they closed the latter down (don't ask me where the remaining 5.3% went ...) Fresh fish, great variety, awesome location, friendly staff, optional fresh wasabi and thriving atmosphere is what you'd get if you dine here. Thursdays nights and weekends are the worst times to dine as you'll need to wait at least 10-15mins before a seat. But otherwise it aint too bad on the other days. Do yourself a favour if you're around the area and try em out!

I specifically had the scallop hotate and prawn ebi. Both were very good. Seafood was cooked nicely. Tasty rice. We also had the soft shell crab uramaki - inside out roll - fried soft shell crab, spicy tobiko jalapeno mayonnaise. This was delicious. Nice crab flavor, tasty mayo, not too spicy. We finished with the king prawn tempura - saffron rouille, shellfish salt. Nice flavor batter, crispy but tender shrimp. Service was a bit spotty and the music was too loud but the food made up for that. Definitely an interesting dining experience.
