Fantastic food and service. Steak ale pie, lamb's liver with bacon, and cottage pie were all delicious.

A beautiful pub/restaurant in a small well healed village with seriously narrow streets. We arrived for our booking at 12 and were sat in the restaurant, short wait for the daily changing menu to be printed. On arrival the very helpful waitress took us through it detailing the various sections. I chose a delicious lambs tongue in aspic as my starter which I really enjoyed. We ordered mains, my partner ordered the beef fillet and I had the rose veal. She loved her dish and was very complimentary about it. My veal was nice, quite herby, and borderline over seasoned. Our biggest issue was the waitress didnt actually explain the total lack of accompanying vegetables, or we would have ordered some. Desserts were both lovely, chocolate tart and profiteroles but both were more like petit fours size than a dessert. We had the interesting distraction of the quite loud instructions to the brigade in the kitchen the bonus being that we heard when our dishes were coming. The decor was nice the building is of an age so some restrictions in how it can be modernised. Toilets were clean and well appointed. A great experience, a few minor tweaks necessary to make it a real destination venue

Both our pieces of fish were virtually identical in size and shape, the batter wasn't freshly deep-fried, soggy, and definitely not mare in their kitchen, supported by the fact, that the meal was on the table literally five minutes after ordering, suggesting that it was shop bought. The chips weren't fat or deep fried, but skinny shop bought fries and the peas were hard. when asked by the waitress how everything was, I expressed my disappointment and to be fair to her, she did ask if I wanted her to get the manager, to which I declined. However, if I was manager in the hugely competitive hospitality market at the moment and one of my staff mentioned to me that a customer had been disappointed, I would hurry over there before they left and offer some sort of recompense- voucher, free drink etc. we stayed for another 30 minutes after the meal for a drink in the bar, and no sign of him/her. Not a good experience and I won't be going back nor recommending.
