What a beautiful place to have a wedding venue! I was surprised on how small it looks in the front, but walking around the back, this place is big, gorgeous and amazing! We came here for a wedding last month and we had an amazing time. It was an outdoor ceremony followed by a cocktail hour in another building, and the reception in another building. Each building was well taken care of and was perfect for the wedded couple. I was taken away by the ambiance of the three different facilities we used and how they were coinciding with each other very well. I would recommend this spot to anyone who's looking for an event venue or a place to get married, very cool! read more

I wanted to share this because the treatment and service was incredible from start to finish. I work for renewal by Anderson and we were there sharing what we do while they had the NW Chamber of Commerce today. Allie Aden was the first person I met when I arrived and she was incredible her professionalism and caring was impeccable as well as Sandy Barton was so very nice when I introduced myself. We had an amazing wedding at Shirley Acres. Every employee we encountered was kind and helpful. Kristie was our wedding planner and made sure that everything I asked for was heard. All of our guests are still commenting on how beautiful it was and how every little detail was perfection. The grounds are beautiful and the Garden Room has been updated with gorgeous chandeliers. Having the guesthouse on the property made it super easy for the guys to get ready close by and super easy to go back to after the reception. Only a couple of very, very small things could have been improved, but overall everything was just wonderful. The a/c in the bridal suite needs some help. It was stiflingly warm back where all the ladies were getting their makeup and hair done; not good when you're already trying not to melt in the September heat. Other than that, the mattress in the master suite at the guest house could definitely use replacing. Like I said though, small things. read more

I can't say enough about the staff and grounds at Shirley Acres. My wedding was a dream thanks to the lovely team there. Bob and Allie were my contacts - Allie is next level fantastic. Over the years I have attend a variety of events as Shirley Acres. Recently I attended a Gala in the Garden Room. I am always struck with how impressive this room is and how it can be decorated to make any event a special event. At this event I was the winning bid for a donated dinner sponsored by Shirley Acres. I used the dinner to have a formal dinner party with family and friends. All I had to do was set the table. The dinner was Chef Felipe's fabulous chicken marcella, sauteed vegetables and pasta. The pasta was so tasty I could have served it as a meal by itself. Shirley Acres was generous with all the portions. None of my guest were disappointed. Bob, Felipe and the staff were helpful with detailed instructions on preparing the meat at my home. Thank you, Shirley Acres, for helping me have a fabulous event at my home. And yes, if I am at another event and have the opportunity to bid on a meal provided by Shirley Acres I WILL. read more

I'm getting married at Shirley Acres in June. We have come here a few times as the wedding date nears and have always had a pleasant experience. The staff is always super friendly and nice. Every time I come they have couples and groups of families visiting and are always extremely helpful. They answer all questions regarding pricings and what is/is not included in their packages. They are open to suggestions and do not have final say on what you can or cannot do during your ceremony or reception; they will work with you to make your wedding day really be the nitght/day that you dreamed up (if you have ever planned a wedding, you'll know how important this is). On this particular visit, we went to have the food tasting for our selected menu; Chicken Marsala and carved beef. We scheduled the tasting ahead of time, they called us to confirm a day before, also asked us the number of people that would be coming to the tasting. The four of us (Mom, Dad, Fiancee and I) went to the tasting expecting sample portions of everything, when we got there, and got there a bit late, our wedding coordinator sat us at a table, brought us water and told us the meal was coming. First came the salad. 3 out of 5. It was good, nothing impressive, yet flavorful enough that I remember being satisfied. The bread, 5 out of 5. Garlic bread rolls that are baked to a light golden brown with enough crisp to be crunchy yet soft enough to not break your teeths. The flavor was awesome. The chicken marsala. 4 out of 5. I would have given it five stars but my Dad thoght it was a tad salty, maybe it had a little too much wine, though overall I thought it was excellent. The beef, 4 out of 5. The peppered gravy created a great contrast to the chicken. The flavor worked really well. Veggies. 5 out of 5. Rarely do you find someone who can cook green beans to the perfect soft/crunchy point. The green beans tasted amazing. The mashed potatos was equally good. There's almost nothing as good a fresh mashed potatos that did not come from a flaky base. They top it with sour cream, cheese and bacon bits, so it's almost like you're eating a baked potato. In all, we tasted all of the menu that will be served at the wedding. The portions look like the are big enough to satisfy our guests and the buffet style (manned by SA staff) is preffered to the self-serve options other wedding venues offered us. The staff were extremely mindful of their customer service. The chef took our recomendations without feeling insulted, telling us that he can cook to fit our tastebuds. Mr. Shirley is always there with a smile greets everyone as if it's their first time touring the venue. He and the rest of the staff are always ready to answer questions to better fit our needs. I attended a wedding as a guest here just a few weeks ago and was blown away by by the beauty, class, and efficiency of the whole staff. An early-September event in Houston means rain is always on the table and it did get served up--right before the ceremony! The Shirley Acres staff didn't bat an eye. They snapped to action as soon as the deluge stopped, wiping down chairs quickly and smoothly. I could tell Charity, the event planner, was rolling with the punches and working hard behind the scenes to keep the bride and groom happy, even through the unexpected! And she totally succeeded. Breaking down the event afterward went very quickly, too, with Charity giving orders to me and other family members in a controlled, professional way. And when I realized I'd left my sunglasses at the event space, Charity worked with me to get them back to the east coast in one piece! Everyone went above and beyond to make this a special, memorable day for everyone involved. read more

The BEST wedding venue hands down. Bob and his team are soooo incredibly kind, accommodating, and hard working. They practically take care of everything so your day and the time leading up to it, are stress free and pleasant. We had to reschedule our date less than a week out and Bob was so unbelievably understand and generous to us. We felt like his first priority the entire time. Overall, our wedding was absolutely beautiful and we had a great experience. Coming into it, we knew there would be hiccups along the way (as every wedding will), but we feel the venue has some areas of improvement. Our ceremony and reception were extremely stressful since we felt we had to coordinate everything ourselves, and throughout the whole experience, no one communicated with us about what needed to happen or what was expected from us. Our wedding party, guests and family were not taken care of, the dinner had to be corrected, and I had to initiate every communication. To start, we always had to initiate contact with the coordinator (April). I think this led to some miscommunication with things we thought would be taken care of. One example is at rehearsal. There was confusion with the actual ceremony because things were not adequately explained at rehearsal. Our wedding party and family commented that "rehearsal was nothing like the ceremony and we didn't know what to do." When we spoke with the coordinator about what we wanted, we thought she would execute them the day of, but it turned out we had to give a lot more attention to details and communication to our guests than we thought. Additionally, despite me giving a schedule of events (that I had to make) and confirming with the venue multiple times that we can take pictures outside at a certain time, at one point we had to relocate because another event needed the space. This was irritating because if we knew, we would have set up somewhere else to begin with. Another issue was with seating. Our family was not told where to sit, and this resulted in some immediate family sitting in the back of the room during the reception. The tables for family were reserved at the front, but that was never communicated to the guests, and we had non-family sitting at those tables. It was heartbreaking to see our grandparents seated at the back of the room. The package deal was a lifesaver, and really helped to ease stress. They were very flexible with putting together the package and wedding that we wanted. I also love that I was able to drop some things off the week before. Part of the package deal was that the meal would accommodate the many allergies of our family. We were explicitly promised by the owner that this would be the case. This promise is one of the main reasons why we picked the venue. Despite the confirmation call the week of, the night of the wedding, we were served a plate of food that did not reflect what we talked about, and had all of the allergies mentioned. It was quickly corrected, but it made us anxious about the food our guests were being served- we had many guests with severe allergies. Despite being assured the allergies would be accounted for, being served the wrong plate made us concerned. The food was delicious, no doubt, but we thought our guests would have the same allergy friendly options we had, and we spent quite a bit of time at dinner double checking the food and making sure our guests were okay. One of the biggest things we did not appreciate was that my matron of honor served our party their drinks and dinner. April was very attentive to serve the bride and groom, but our wedding party was completely ignored. In short, it seemed all the attention of the staff was on the bride and groom and this resulted in neither our family nor our wedding party being taken care of. This hurt our hearts, as the burden of taking care of them fell on us and was actually impossible for us to do. I think all of this could have been resolved if there was more clear communication between the venue, the staff and the guests. Maybe we misunderstood what a coordinator is, but we were expecting someone to take charge the day of the wedding and make sure things ran smoothly. It turned out that we had to worry about and run things we didn't expect to. At the end of the day, I would use Shirley Acres again. I just want other brides to know what they are getting into. If you want someone to actually help, guide you, and run the show, hire extra support. I will say though, April was the perfect blend of calm and excited. Every time I talked with her, I felt like I could take a deep breath. She was a great emotional support! read more

I've been to multiple events at Shirley Acres over a number of years. They've always been banquets or awards dinners and never a wedding, so I can't comment on what it would be like to host or attend a wedding here. But I have watched this facility emerge, grow and evolve and I believe they still have much growth to do before they are a prime facility. Nestled within the trees and down a "country road" of what was a quiet section of the county, Shirley Acres offers a glorious setting. That is, provided that you don't arrive right before the event starts and it isn't raining. Parking: We all arrive by car, don't we? Park. Park? Where? The parking facilities are abysmal here, unless you like parking on grass and gravel and in between pine trees with virtually no lights to guide you when you leave. Twisty-turny little one-way paved roadways that have no perceivable direction are littered in a contrasting and contradicting pattern. Leave your heels at home, for once you exit your car after you park, your heel with descend into the earth below. One of the main reasons I dread coming to events here is that I do not own a truck with 4 X 4 capabilities, which would be so instrumental for parking if I'm not one of the first 30 people to arrive. The room: An adequately-sized room with an outdoor area available that is quite lovely for afternoon or early evening events. Minimal decorations seem to be provided by Shirley Acres: string lights and greenery. Everything else is apparently up to the group that is hosting the event. Each event I've attended has been beautifully decorated, so it's apparent that they are very accommodating to the contracting party. Dance floor is very, very small. Extensions may be available for weddings (I would hope), for it's clear that no more than 4-6 couples could comfortably dance on that floor without knocking someone over onto the carpet space. Food: The quality of the food has improved in the last several years. The latest event I attended served an adequate salad (mainly iceberg lettuce with a few other nondescript mix ins) with two choices of dressing; roast beef slices that were sliced well, cooked beautifully and very tasty and tender; chicken breast pieces that I did not taste (they appeared to be braised in some sort of sauce); potatoes and a green bean/veggie mix. The potatoes were actually quite good; the green beans/veggies were limp and overcooked, however. I was pleased with my meal, since this was a vast improvement over what I'd eaten previously at Shirley Acres. Drinks, you ask? This was a non-alcoholic affair, and I got there right before the event began, so I immediately found my seat and waited to grab my water, iced tea, lemonade choice for after the introductions. By the time I did that, dinner was being served and they had run out of glasses -- so I got an iced tea in a small plastic cup, similar to what you'd get at a local ball game. Elegant? Me thinks not. Serving of the food: This is where Shirley Acres needs to rethink their strategy. Their facility isn't large enough to accommodate a buffet line -- oh my! Lines twisting and turning throughout with people waiting WAY too long to go through -- half of the guests were finished eating before the other half had even been served! Frankly, it's no better when they've used individual service, either, since I've seen them utilize that, too. Too few servers for too many people. People get frustrated and fidgety when they're hungry, and the time management of food delivery here is absolutely, poitively pathetic. There is a roomy stage area for presentations. Sound is good and electronic equipment capabilities are also good. Rest rooms are adequate: neither great nor terrible. Shirley Acres is conveniently located for those of us that live in this part of the county. It's not a huge facility and it's not ostentatious, either. It is what it is. I'd like it a whole lot more if their parking didn't suck and I knew I was going to eat before 9 PM when the even started at 6:30 PM, though. I am giving them 3 stars because they have improved a whole lot since they first opened. That, in and of itself, should say a whole lot. read more

My name is Nolan Conley and I'm a commercial wedding photographer with over 26 years full time photography experience and I've been to just about every reception facility in Houston. I'm on Shirley Acres as well as numerous other facilities recommended service list. We've found Shirley Acres to have nice and helpful staff that really care about what you want and will help you achieve the look you desire for your event. The food is excellent and as good an an location in Houston. The chicken isn't dry, the seafood is to die for and the flavor is excellent! Shirley Acres has recently updated their facilities with artwork, chandeliers and increased the space in the Garden Room. It's a very nice venue. One reviewer noted that Shirley Acres was prone to flooding... I personally have been doing weddings there off and on for over 24 years and the only time the Pavilion (closest to the creek) ever flooded was during Allison 2001. But then half of Houston also flooded during that storm. There are other nice facilities in Houston who do a great job with weddings and Shirley Acres is among the best of them that really care about you and your special day. read more

Venue is beautiful. Staff is great. Everything is wonderful but the DJ. This is the second wedding I've attended and the DJ is very loud and obnoxious, music was so loud you could barely hear anyone speaking to you. We got married here about two years ago and had a good experience. The staff were friendly and the price was reasonable. This venue included everything but the flowers we carried/wore (floral table centerpieces were included) and the photographer, which was a big factor in why we chose it. At the time we got married, they didn't have a liquor license but we brought in booze for an open bar and paid a licensed bartender friend to serve drinks. There were a wide variety of tasty menu options to choose for the buffet. Some of my guests complained that the food was put away too quickly so grab all you want while you can! They made to-go boxes for both of us to take, which was awesome when we got back to the hotel and realized how hungry we were from all that dancing! My wedding coordinator made sure there was a drink in my hand whenever I wanted one = yes please! We had the smaller room and we liked how quaint and country it felt although that may not be for everyone. read more

I had my wedding yesterday and I will say the venue was beautiful! We had a garden wedding and reception in the garden room. It was decorated beautifully and our DJ was awesome. BUT our coordinator Sheila completely let us down. She was nowhere to be found during the majority of our reception. We gave her a schedule of how we wanted our wedding to go, but when we got delayed with pictures and guests, the whole timeline was ruined and Sheila was not communicating with us about what we needed to happen. My mother in law asked her to cut the cake several times but Sheila just disregarded it. When we needed to talk to Sheila, we would look around and she would be way across the room or nowhere in sight. Our reception was extremely stressful since we felt we had to coordinate everything ourselves. Very sad and disappointing. Hopefully they address this with Sheila since our wedding was once in a lifetime and we will never get to recreate those memories. read more

From a Husband's perspective: This place is simply amazing. We had three venues in mind in Houston my now-wife and I were looking at. We stopped here first, checked it out, talked to Bob (this guys is amazing), and ended up not even checking out other venues. We fell in love immediately. First of all, they are priced VERY competitively to a lot of other venues in Houston. It is family business, so I guess they believe in providing a great service at a price that is reasonable. They have so much included in their wedding package, that is made it so easy for my wife. Wedding planning is already so stressful, but them having centerpieces, flexible with flowers, food options, a guest house, and help of the day of the wedding helped my wife be at ease knowing we didn't have to worry. Dirty, dirty, dirty - filthy windows, spider webs, dirty kitchen and marked up floors - nice counrty setting but not parking unless you consider grass a parking spot - they say they have a lake but it is really a very small murky slimy retentiion type small pond. Shirley Acres is beautiful from the outside to the big room for the reception. Even though my wedding ceremony had to be moved inside due to rain, it was still beautiful. The food was great and the decoration was beautiful. On our rehersal night, I brought everything that would be used in our wedding day, our coordinator Christina was labeling all our stuff and when she saw my decoration for the top of the cake she said " wow, that is old!" And I jumped and said to her, that was my mom and dad wedding decor for their cake and I wanted to keep it running in the family. Is the meaning of it and I was really bothered by it. You don't say that, it was completely rude. That was strike one. Strike two: Our wedding was an interfaith ceremony, and in the Jewish traditions you break a glass. I brought that glass among other things and I gave it to my coordinator Christina. Christina comes back and asked "where is the glass? , so I can put it in the table were the unity candle is". Well she lost it and we couldn't find it and she said " I saw it, I am not crazy". So the glass was later found at the end of our wedding, but the meaningful of that special moment was taken away, I trusted her with those things that way I could get ready. Strike three: I had wedding place cards, I set them up on the table.(the coordinator knew I would have those) She comes and asked if she could help and then she asked " how would they know where they are sitting?" So I said well I got numbers for the table, so since you are the expert; how should we do this? And all she could tell me was " I don't know, let them find their name" Sure enough, when my husband and I were getting ready to come in our reception; she comes and tells me, some people cannot find were they are sitting, what should I do!! I was not happy about that, I had to tell her, " they can seat wherever they want!" Strike four: We were told by the owner of Shirley Acres; was that there will be an amount of wine/beer for the wedding, if for whatever reason we need to open another, we will have extra. And the coordinate will come and ask if we need to open. My dad had to look for the coordinator because she was nowhere to be found, finally when he saw her; her asked if we can have more wine? Her answer was " there's no more wine/ beer and we don't have extras. Strike five: We were told by our guest, was that the children had some mimosas. That table with the mimosas fountain was close to the soft drink and it wasn't labeled. We felt horrible. Even though our wedding was nice, I think that those detail could have been prevented. If you get Christina as a coordinator, prepare yourself to do everything and don't count on her, she may loose some of your special props for the wedding and she doesn't know how to guide you. read more

My daughter is getting married at Shirley Acres in April. We shopped many beautiful venues in Houston, but always left with the overwhelming feeling that we were "just another wedding" and she was "just another bride". The staff has been so attentive, patient and accessible. The Open Houses are really helpful and give you the opportunity to actually SEE and TASTE what you're paying for and allow you to make more informed decisions. We've visited several times and the grounds are always beautiful and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. We are confident we've found the perfect place. She walked me through the entire planning process in respect to Shirley Acres portion and made the rehearsal and wedding day a breeze. We got married at Shirley Acres last November. This is a lovely venue with great service. Mr. Shirley and his staff were quite attentive and accommodating. Krystal and Christina were very knowledgeable and communicative in the months preceding the wedding. After hearing friends' day-of coordinator horror stories, I realize how great a job Shirley Acres did. The ceremony and reception events flowed very well. We had decided on the barbecue menu, and we received many a compliment from our guests about the food. The only thing I might have changed is that I would have asked whether the lights could be dimmed once the dancing started, which is really quite a minuscule detail! As with any venue, definitely ask all your questions well in advance so that everyone is on the same page. read more

I have found the best venue ever. Shirley Acres has exceeded my expectations of what I envisioned my wedding to be. The venue is beautiful. It's peaceful, beautiful, open, but also very intimate. I visited and researched several venues and liked all of them, but what I didn't know was all of the hidden costs and fees. They don't have anything like that. It's all straight forward and very affordable. Shirley Acres is all inclusive, which if you have ever planned a wedding you greatly appreciate. I cannot express how much time and stress that takes off of you. The staff has gone above and beyond to make me happy and to cater to my pickiness, and the owner has made me feel like family. One big difference this venue had that the others did not, is they made me feel like I wasn't just another bride. The staff totally customizes the venue in everyway to your likes and needs. I had my wedding reception here back in April. Words cannot describe how amazing everything was. From the planning to the actual reception, the staff at Shirley Acres was on top of it all. The food was top notch, the cakes not only looked EXACTLY like what I wanted, but tasted even better. Everything at SA is all inclusive which saved SO much stress when it came to looking for outside vendors. They provide the DJ, linens, flowers, cakes, food, beer & wine, etc. The only outside vendor I brought in was my photographer and bartender. Krystal and Jennifer worked with me every step of the way to ensure I had my dream wedding. Well, Mary V,, I have hosted a beautiful Christmas party for a women's political group and most recently my daughter's wedding reception at Shirley Acres. It was as much as my daughter and I could have hoped for. In her words...."It was absolutely perfect." When she and her new husband walked in they were taken back at the beauty of the room. Bob, Jane, and Sheila (especially Sheila) worked very hard to keep the cost down and make sure we were happy. They fussed over her flowers and cakes. Responded to her request for "emerald green" uplights. Worked on linens with us until we came up with the winning look. It took weeks! (Mom had tried to do it without daughter and it was all wrong.) The food was great and one person who attended told me she thought it was the best food she had ever had at a wedding. The alfredo sauce on the chicken was incredible. They also brought in the man they felt to be the best DJ for my daughter and new husband. Dancing on their all new wood floors made it seem the dance area was huge. They really had a great time. Additionally, I think our new son-in-law's parents were very honored and that was huge to us. Only constant consideration and lots of patience were our experience there. I don't know how we could have had such an event anywhere else and kept the costs under control as we did at Shirley Acres. read more

Bob and his team are wonderful! They helped us every step along the way with a smile. The venue was beautiful for our outdoors wedding. The food was great (we ate it for 7 more meals since we had so much leftovers). The cake was delicious. Their package includes DJ, cake, flowers (except bouquet and boutonnière), food, and a lot more, which takes out a lot of headache from wedding planning. Our coordinator Charity executed everything very well. Jim (the florist) made beautiful arrangements that pleased everyone. Wonderful location with wonderful people. the only nice part of this place is the outside. everything else is old and worn out (not to mention the odd pungent smell throughout inside the venue!!). the walls, the chairs, their furniture is extremely old and not in a chic/vintage kind of way. their messy office is out in the open for everyone to see and their faded lounge chairs in the brides room are so old the cushions literally sink INTO the chairs completely! what was most shocking was how overly priced they are! there are beautiful places in & around Houston for the same price if not less. I wasted my time driving there to look at the place... dont waste yours! read more

My husband and I got married at Shirley Acres two weeks ago. We had the most wonderful time and it was a dream wedding for us! While I have watched friends with different venues stress out, we were able to enjoy being engaged and Shirley Acres took care of all of the details that are making my friends pull their hair out! Jane, our coordinator, was amazing and so helpful. Jim, the florist was a joy to work with and so passionate about his job. The DJ was great and Bob Shirley always made us feel so comfortable. We used The Element hotel and Jane was great at communicating with them when we needed a larger shuttle. The wine and food were wonderful and the cake was perfect (even though it was not traditional - they made it perfectly!). I cannot say enough about how wonderful, how well priced, how easy and enjoyable the wedding was thanks to Shirley Acres! I am so glad we got married there! read more

I got married here about a week ago and I was very happy. Everyone was very friendly, the price was very reasonable and the service was great. The food and the cakes were amazing. The baker was on point with everything. I even got containers to go with the remainder of the cakes, and lots of food that was left over. They made sure that at the end of the night, my family had everything ready to go and that nothing was forgotten. My wedding was so low maintenance and pretty stress-free because of them. My coordinator handled almost everything. They were very open to suggestions and were willing to work with me. The venue and the grounds were simple, clean and decorated tastefully. Nothing over the top. My wedding was small and accomodated 60 guests easily. It might've even been too big for the amount of guests that attended. But nonetheless, I'd recommend this venue for a small, quick, low maintenance wedding with a bit of a rustic feel. read more
