When I went back for a last time before leaving the next morning there must have been an opera letting out nearby, because the place was thronged with well-dressed 60-somethings ordering enough tropical cocktails to sink Tahiti. The bartender was this sassy gal from Munich I think she said, & she was clearly putting in the paces to keep up, but when it all died down us survivors had some shots of kümmel & I walked off into the nite feeling pretty dang fine. I have also been very late (post-theater) on a Saturday evening and we never made it inside; we had to sit outside. The decor is subtle and classy. Le Lion is the cradle of the gin basil smash (I had never heard of it until I came here but it seems to be a Hamburg thing). You do pay a premium for the drink but it's the original and it's also a good drink. In conclusion: Come early to get inside for the full speakeasy experience. Come late and understand if you have to sit outside. Don't miss the gin basil smash; they invented it.

I told her my typical "go to" bourbon cocktails and she came back with a variant that was very nice. On point! Old Fashioned with maple syrup and peanut accents. Wound up having two. :) For food, I tried their chicken club. So good! Maybe the best club sandwich I've ever had. The chicken was cooked perfectly and it had hard boiled egg and a great sauce. Literally finger lickin' good. The room is very nicely and modernly decorated and the music was perfect, to my liking. Glad I stopped in. Give it a try. :)

What I love is the crowd is a myriad of ages, I swear there was a 90-something-year-old at the bar this visit, which only adds to the character. The bar men are dressed to kill, suspenders and all, and the waiters don't miss a step. The drink menu may take you half the night to read through, but it strings the conversation around the world as you discover a glass of whiskey from such and such island can actually cost that much. Yes, prices are high, but you will leave satisfied. I suggest: try a NEW drink. You can get your good'ol gin*n tonic elsewhere.
