I heard about this place a lot on social media and reddit, so I decided to check it out for myself. Location-wise, the parking lot is a bit on the worn side. I would've loved to tried more flavors, but unfortunately for my order of 4 wings, I was not allowed to mix-and-match and had to choose just one flavor. I ended up deciding on Spicy Cambodian Dirt and also got some garlic noodles on the side. The service time was very quick. I ate it at my apartment ~5 minutes away. First off, everything smelled sooo good. Opening the box of wings just unleashed a pleasant scent of spices and herbs. I also had to admire the amount of noodles that came in a small size - it's a lot. These noodles can really fill you up for cheap. The garlic noodles were surprising not as a oily as ones I've had in the past. The flavor is also distinctly different. It has the same aroma as the bone soup that gets served on the side at restaurants like Phnom Penh Noodle Shack or Rice String. It's pleasantly fragrant with a hint of sweetness, almost like a kuy teav. The wings were good too. It was not overpowering with the seasoning, but honestly, I would've liked more seasoning because it was really good. It's not spicy up front, but it does sneak up on you. I'm glad that I took this home so I can lick my fingers without being embarrassed in public. The only thing stopping me from licking the inside of the box was that my face didn't fit. My personal favorite was the tamarind tiger. Tamarind is known to have a sour/tangy note, but this sauce was the perfect balance of sweet and tangy without losing the tamarind note. By far my favorite sauce for chicken wings! Yes, even better than Korean soy garlic chicken and my mom's homemade Vietnamese fish sauce wings. (Sorry, mom!) We also tried Cambodian dirt. It is described as lemongrass and pepper, which is pretty much the Asian version of Wing Stop's lemon pepper. I was never a huge fan of lemongrass growing up because of how overwhelming it can be, but they do it just right! It tastes just like a lemon pepper rub with the perfect amount of lemongrass coming through with each bite. We also tried jalapeño MSG, spicy elephant (sister's favorite), dirty Elvis, Pekang (her bf's favorite) and orange habanero. Aside from their delicious food, the staff at Shalp Muan are amazing! They were very patient with us as we debated on what to order and were accommodating each time we bugged them for more soda or napkins. They knew the regulars by name and their orders by memory. It was a very inviting establishment the moment we walked in. I wish I took more photos of the food, but we dug in so fast the moment it was ready. The place didn't have a bathroom and it reminded me of an office building where you would find people making custom printed t shirts at. No disrespect I'm just calling it as I see it. The garlic noodles are basically spaghetti noodles with soy sauce mixed into it. It wasn't edible. 1 out of 5 . The Cambodian dirt wings is not good, it's super sour with a hint of lemon grass it's trying to resemble a krueng sorta paste but it didn't pass. We took one bite and threw it away. 1 out of 5 The dirty Elvis was ok, it just tasted like sweet teriyaki glaze. 2 out of 5 The water buffalo tasted like buffalo wings nothing out of the ordinary. These are some great wings! The spicy Cambodian dirt ones are my new fav. I have tried several of their other flavors and there are some really good ones but something about their take on lemon pepper just has me hooked. The service here is always great and are always there to answer any questions you may have. They are in a small strip mall but there is always plenty of parking. This place makes great wings. The store is in a strip mall with other businesses and a shared parking lot, so there's plenty of parking. I wanted to get all the flavours so when I stepped into the store and up to the counter, I asked everyone behind the counter what the best way to taste all the available flavours was and the owner suggested I get the 48 wings and that'd give me four of every flavour, added an order of Dirty Elvis. Here are the flavours I got - in no particular order: 1. Dirty Elvis 2. Orange habanero 3. Water Buffalo 4. Jalapeño MSG 5. Spicy elephant 6. Sweet & spicy garlic 7. Pekang Wang 8. Spicy Cambodian dirt 9. Cambodian dirt 10. Balut 11. Naked My partner loved - and I mean LOVED - everything and I had to concur with him; we've had food from restaurants where we've liked some dishes and not others, but every single flavour was amazing here. We're definitely coming back. His absolute favourite was the spicy elephant while mine was a tie between orange habanero and water buffalo (because I'm a sucker for spicy food). I forgot the prices, but it was worth every penny - my partner and I found the wings (drums and flats) to be crispy whether it was the sauces or dry seasoning. It even travelled well from when we picked up the food to arriving home - the owner let me know to keep the boxes and plastic bags they were in open to ensure the wings stayed crispy due to the moisture. The inside is spacious with excellent customer service and friendly employees! The ambiance is almost hole-in-the-wall vibes, but lots of seating options, whether you want to sit down or wait while take-out. I'd have loved to sit-down, but with the temperatures being the way they were, I wanted to get back home too. And, since the owner was there, I got to speak Khmer with him and catch up on Cambodia and our backgrounds. Chicken wings? You had me at wings! My wife and I love Asian flavored chicken wings so when she found this place on Yelp, we had to give this place a try. The store is in a small shopping lot with a decent amount of parking. The store is pretty clean and low maintenance and they have about 6 tables for dine in. There is no public restroom unfortunately. The store is run by a very nice family who was hospitable and attentive. We tried 4 flavors and they were all good. My wife's favorite were the sweet spicy garlic wings, which had a good garlic flavor. I liked the dirty Elvis which were sweet and savory, but my favorite were the Cambodian dirt wings. They reminded me of the Lucas candy I had as a kid, sweet, salty, slightly spicy, and savory. The Cambodian dirt and Elvis were crispier than the other two, but we still enjoyed all the wings. My only complaint is that none of the wings were that spicy, even to my wife who is sensitive to spicy food. We also had their Thai tea for $4 and a Durian shake which were both fantastic. I think if you find this place on your own thats great, but its when you bring someone else and share the pleasure of eating something purely delicious that you get to express your love for them. And when you walk into this place its unassuming, like you wouldn't know that you just stumbled into the best chicken shop in your life. And in the case for me, you wouldn't know that it could potentially change your life. For me, it's the small details the owner has taken to make it such a community and culturally driven place. He himself is a character of the restaurant. He welcomes whoever walks through the door, he remembers his customers, while we were there he gave everyone samples of their new Dirty Elvis flavor, he's so cheerful, he makes sure you're full and satisfied when you leave. What a guy! The menu is unpretentious, extremely focused, inspired, and borderline thought-provoking in terms of how well it's curated. It's just chicken and side dishes. Its not muddled in the drama of a large menu that could overpower the simplicity of the fried chicken. Each wing is executed so well that they are really letting the fried chicken speak for itself. The owner takes immense pride in what he does, and he has a right to do so because every wing is that good. The chicken is moist on the inside, perfectly fried on the outside, never greasy, but holds the seasoning, and has the perfect amount of seasoning on the outside, never too salty. Peep the biased cut on the scallions for the garlic noodles, that's not just a skill, that's artistry and craftsmanship. This would also be a great spot for customers who are just getting into Cambodian food. Long Beach has such a large population of Cambodians, yet Cambodian food still struggles to dominate the mainstream food scene due to gentrification and xenophobia. And in that sense, this chicken shop not only delivers good food, but it also provides knowledge that Cambodian food is modern, accessible, and bottom line delicious. The written menu itself is well designed, descriptive, clear and concise. Additionally, the staff are knowledgeable and know how to walk you through your decision making with your order by providing ample descriptions of what you could expect. Each flavor has a word play and cheekily incorporates the flavor profiles that are specific to Cambodia. A lot of times, when restaurants have a Southeast Asian menu, its lumped into a monolith of flavors that provides no nuance to what it means to reference those places. Here, they are providing something that not a lot of restaurants have yet to lean into, which makes this place both nostalgic and innovative. These flavors have always existed but it's done in a way that shows that the menu developer has a strong focused concept, restraint, and sophistication. A wet style wing that incorporates the blended flavors of tangy fish sauce and peanuts named Spicy Elephant is so clever. Cambodian Dirt as a dry rub that just makes sense considering the intense agriculture in Cambodia. Jalapeno MSG boldly brings up past discourses around normalizing the consumption of MSG in Asian restaurants. Dirty Elvis is a fun one and reminds us that someone back there just likes Elvis the same way immigrant parents love one random American music star from the 60s. I also just love the restaurant title because it forces people to sound through Cambodian language and get it into their vernacular. Embrace what this restaurant stands for and has to offer. The Water Buffalo is not fully drenched with buffalo sauce so you can enjoy the crispiness of the wings, and the sauce is not bitter like regular buffalo; it tastes more smooth. For 8 wings they allow you to choose up to two flavors. I ended up getting their Spicy Cambodian Dirt and Sweet Spicy Garlic. I originally wanted to try their Spicy Elephant flavor but sadly they were out. The Spicy Cambodian Dirt was probably the better one of the two. My GF got their fried rice too and she said it was cool but nothing special. We were both really full after finishing our food. Service was cool. You can tell they are doing great when you walk in plus the smell!!!! Wowwwww!!! We truly didn't know which flavors to order since there was a few so we stuck with jalapeño msg and dirty Elvis. I wanted shrimp fried rice but hubs wanted to try their garlic noodles. First, that was a mistake. Garlic noodles was sooooo dry and had no taste! Great place that has the crisp on the chicken wings nailed down to a T! I've been here a few times and most recently got takeout. Happy to say, that even for takeout - they put in special care to not tie the bag to ensure the wings stay crispy. And these wings are easy to reheat in the oven and are just as perfect the next day. As far as sauces and flavors, it's more about personal favorites. I liked the peanut thai sauce one the most with it being a little more saucy, but the dry rubs are generally good as well. Hard to go wrong. I do wish they would experiment with more traditional Buffalo wing flavors, but I get they specialize in Cambodian wings, so maybe that's an unfair expectation of me, but if I found a place that could do wings and blue cheese right in SoCal, I'd be in heaven; but at least so far I found a great wing place.
