I can't believe so many people eat here. We figured the bad reviews were exaggerating, but they were not. The place is so filthy. When my husband pulled my chair out, he got something sticky on his hand. There were grease a food spots slung all over the walls, chairs, etc. The plates were also filthy. They had some hard film/coating that I could scratch off with my fingernail. The place is kept extremely dark. I guess to hide the grime. It was so gross even my 10 yr old noticed and asked to leave. We did not have reservations but went on a Monday evening, so no issue with seating grill-side. The chef's shtick at the beginning is very hibatchi-familiar, but the food was delicious and abundant. Service was excellent. The pricing was fair. Parking was ample. Will definitely return. read more

Y'ALL! This is the place to go for hibachi in Venice. The service was phenomenal, the food was even more amazing, and it's so clean inside (that's a biggie for me). My friend and I decided to head to Shogun for my 40th birthday dinner because we both love hibachi. I ordered the lobster and he had the steak/chicken. When I say that he wiped his plate clean, I mean he left zero crumbs. Lol. I was wishing my stomach was larger because my plate was so delicious. Cannot recommend enough. read more

Walked in, it was empty and smelled like an old restaurant. Room was dark, menu unreadable. Food was bland, chefs jokes and tricks felt rote and fell flat. Service was ok. Price was steep. None of us 4 would go back. SW Florida isn't known for epicurean Asian cuisine but there must be better choices for so we'll keep looking read more

Just pretty all around gross. Place is very dirty, the waiter kept sweating and wiping his towel across his face to soak up the sweat. Then he used that same towel to wipe down the knives he was using to make out food. Wall was literally fuzzy from dirt. Food was not great. Super chewy chicken and although we ordered teriyaki chicken we never got any teriyaki sauce. All the bottles he poured the sauce out of were crusted up and looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months anyway. They served some of us with meat first and a huge wait for rice and veggies and then others had rice and veggies and waited for meat. Ok. Good service, ok food, great prices. Good for families. Ambiance need upgrade and serious scrubbing.

We visited at 4pm after making reservations on a Thursday evening. Early bird specials are available from 4-6pm, making each main meat option approximately $16-20. We were the only guests in our corner of the restaurant, which made us feel more at ease as we had our masks off while eating. Our table easily sat our party of 7 adults and 2 kids. The server who took our order and brought our drinks was funny, making jokes about how the youngest person in our party was going to foot the bill. His sense of humor was a great touch to the kind service he provided. Our meal started with a perfect onion broth in a cup, with a mushroom slice and fresh green onions in it. It was so good! My toddler loved it. Then we were each served a salad of iceberg lettuce and carrots with a sweet dressing. Our chef was kind and more lively than the server. His initial entertainment was making a sort of drum beat with his knives as he flipped a few in the air. Then he briefly lit the whole grill on fire. Our poor toddler was quite terrified and closed his eyes for the rest of the show, wanting it to be done. I think that caused our chef to play it safe for the rest of the show. He didn't engage in too much talking, and other guests in our party said that their chef on a previous visit did more entertainment, like throwing shrimp tails into his hat. I appreciate that the chef took our toddler's feelings into consideration. All this to say, if your kids need some prep before eating here, let them know that the first thing will be a giant blaze right before their eyes. The chef cracked and fried eggs (after throwing an egg into his hat) and added them to rice. He also cooked zucchini, onions, and mushrooms, cutting them skillfully with the sharpest knives I've ever seen. You couldn't hear the knives sliding on the grill either, which was amazing. They slid through veggies and meat like soft butter. We ordered sirloin steak and chicken and shrimp. The chef easily remembered how everyone preferred their steak to be cooked (from medium-rare to well-done in our party), and as each steak reached that perfect point, he chopped it up and served it. Both the chicken and shrimp got covered in a delicious sauce that made them so flavorful. Each person also got a little dish of two sauces that formed a yin-yang shape; one sauce was tangy and the other was creamy. It offered an additional taste sensation to accompany the meat and veggies, but honestly the food was so well-seasoned that it didn't need it. We were there to celebrate two of our guests' birthdays, and the employees wished them happy birthday many times. I wish they had offered a complimentary birthday treat or sang happy birthday, to contribute to the celebration. As for Covid precautions, the employees wore masks when they served us. I did see employees walking around other parts of the empty restaurant without masks on though. This was a fun experience, the sauces really highlighted each of the foods, and I'd come back again for the early bird pricing. read more

We have been going to Shoguns for over 30 years now. Have never had anything wrong with our food or service! Food is always delicious with Chef Steve, and we have grown up on it. Better than any chain hibachi restaurant; homemade seafood and vegetable sauces are amazing. Don't listen to negative reviews. BEWARE, I do deliveries here and if customers seen the back room you would NOT eat here! IT IS THE NASTIEST place I've ever seen. I had a problem with my Lobster which I felt was spoiled so instead of offering to replace or not charge me they decided to charge me $15 for the rice and soup I did eat. Pretty typical for a Japanese Steak House/Hibachi (where you sit at a table surrounding a stove and the chef cooks right in front of you). I sort of feel that if you've been to one Hibachi, you've been to them all... The chefs make the same jokes/do the same tricks - egg roll, the flaming onion tower, etc. - the food is consistently the same, and good. It's good at Shogun, but not amazing. Everyone in my group got the chicken (teryiaki??), which comes with Miso soup (I actually liked it here, as opposed to at other places), salad (LOVE the ginger dressing), fried rice (I would have preferred brown rice or noodles), veggies and I think bean sprouts. It's a LOT of food, but I ate it all up! The main meal comes with 2 different sauces - one for the meat and one for the veggies, but I mixed them around. I read the reviews before I went and decided to ignore them thinking the few bad ones had to be exaggerated. Nope they weren't. This place is terrible. Our cook was a guy from Virginia. He was too good for his job or... so he thought. He basically watched everything except what he is doing. He used the same exact script at each table. Food was too salty and my husbands chicken was tough. The yum yum sauce wasn't good either and to me that's the most important part. I would skip this place. Came here for early bird with my 1 and 3 year old and the staff and the chef did an amazing job. The chef went above and beyond for us: cutting smaller portions for the baby and the toddler and putting on a great show for them. We are so appreciative because going anywhere with kids is hard! We recently visited Shogun Japanese Steakhouse in Florida while on vacation. My family is a big lover of Japanese Steakhouses and we have been to many different locations across the country. This place was definitely unique, as their "Yum Yum" sauce is unlike any other that we've experienced, and I am telling you that's a good thing!! The chef was very personable and funny. He said that only the owner knows the recipe for the sauce and it's a big secret like the Coca Cola recipe. The food was prepared extremely well, and my only deduction is for the slow service. We sat for almost 30 minutes in a mostly empty restaurant before we ordered, and that's no fun with three little kids. Drink refills had to be asked for, as well. Thankfully, the quality of the meal outweighed the slow service. We will definitely return next summer. read more

I've been to plenty of Japanese steakhouses, but this was the only one I've ever been to where the chef was not Japanese, but a white Florida cracker. It's Venice so I get it. Anyway I don't think the redneck chef likes fat people because every time there was extra food, he would dish it out to everyone but me, and the food I paid for he would ask me if it was ok to give some to other people, putting me on the spot. If I said no then I guess I'm the asshole greedy fat guy. It was blatant and I left a minuscule tip and I won't be back. Oh! And instead of fried noodles like every other Japanese steak house gives, they substituted cheap bean sprouts. read more

This restaurant overall was average compared to most teppan restaurants I've been to. The location is convenient, in a shopping center off of hwy 41. There's plenty of parking in front and we were seated fairly quickly. The food was typical teppan nothing fancy and only average tasting, but they had a great cook named Stevie who was absolutely hilarious and very entertaining. I'm not going to be running back to eat here any time soon, but if I do it will be for the entertaining chef. He's a great employee the owner should give him a raise! Four words: I love this restaurant. I grew up eating at Shogun (the same family has owned it since the late eighties), and I have to say I think I love it even more now at 31 than I did as an 8-year-old in awe of the giant fire. I live in Atlanta, but every time my family and I visit my parents in Venice we prioritize eating at Shogun. Over the last week and a half we have eaten there three times! The service is friendly and efficient. Steve, one of the chefs, is a real trip, and adds a dry wit normally found only in comedy clubs. As for the decor, no, it's not the Ritz-Carlton, but it's charming in its own way (my kids love the pond with real fish). Which brings me to my main point: what sets Shogun apart from other hibachi restaurants is, of course, the FOOD. The soup is a simple "shoyu" onion soup (not miso as another reviewer stated), and the green salad comes with a ginger dressing that is just perfect--savory with a hint of wasabi, it avoids the cloying sweetness I find of the dressing at other hibachis. I always order shrimp for my main course: they are succulent, juicy, and pair perfectly with Shogun's delectable mustard-based seafood sauce, again a welcome departure from the overly-sweet white sauce found at most hibachis. Dinner is accompanied by a vegetable medley, beansprouts, and fried rice, which is included for no additional cost. I slather the ginger sauce on pretty much everything--so yummy with hints of orange juice, sesame, garlic, and of course the zesty ginger. Now that I've typed this I am craving Shogun and bummed that I'm now 500 miles away and can't eat there again until Christmas. If you have the chance to go, don't hesitate--go enjoy the deliciousness! I'll try not to be jealous. read more

We sat around the open kitchen, while a very talented young man from New Jersey cooked, talked, and entertained us nonstop from the beginning until our meal was ready. Get your camera out and ready to take pictures of flames, pacman, and other cool feats you can do with hibachi ingredients.
