Birthday? Anniversary? Tuesday date night? Late night gossip sesh? Take me straight to Shojin and nowhere else. Shojin has hands-down the best vegan food in Los Angeles. I can tell that the creators put a ton of thought and love into preparing their rotating menu because every time I return, there's always a new selection that I'm interested in. Shojin also has kind and thoughtful service. My go-to order is the Dynamite Roll and the Shitake Mushroom Miso Soup, but I will usually order something from their seasonal menu as well. We LOVED their Valentines day menu and can't wait to return.

I haven't been to this spot in years and it still has all the charm (and great food) that I remember. As a non-vegan, sometimes plant-based restaurants can be a tough sell for me, but Shojin delivers on all the flavors without cutting corners. The restaurant is quaint, clean, nicely decorated and the service is super attentive and friendly. We went with the mushroom karaage, stuffed mushrooms and truffle california roll this round, and all were delicious. Especially appreciated watching the waiter torch the sushi roll right at the table. The sake list has plenty of options as well. This place is equally great for dates as it is for a night out with a small group of friends. Make sure you make a reservation.

Shojin had been on my "to try" list for SO long. I've been vegan for over a decade and I love vegan sushi! Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed by my experience. My boyfriend and I went for our anniversary and ordered many items off of the menu. Maybe we chose poorly, but I'd like to think that all items on a menu would at least hit the mark of being okay. I don't like food waste, but the leftovers sat in our fridge because neither of us wanted to eat them. Some dishes we weren't pleased with the flavor and some the texture. However, I did enjoy trying the fun blueberry soy milk drink. That was the best item, the only one that was finished & enjoyed! Inside & outdoor seating available. Chairs outside of the restaurant to sit if waiting for them to open. Our server was nice! Street parking is available. Bathroom is available for customers.

I've visited Shojin several times, and each experience is excellent: Ambiance: Warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxed and very romantic meal. Service: The servers are top-notch, attentive, and provide quality service throughout. Food: All the dishes are great. Solo or with 1-2 others, the chef's special 9-course menu is the best way to experience the full range-highlights include Soup, Brussels sprouts, Stuffed mushroom, Crispy rice, Sushi Plate, and Lion's Mane mushroom. The main dish (mushroom) topped it off and after pacing well, I was finally full with some room for dessert. Group visits: With three or more people, the variety and value are even better. Don't miss the Sweet Blue Bailey cream drink-highly recommended. Overall: Whether solo or with a group, Shojin delivers inventive vegan cuisine, exceptional service, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Where do I begin. Such an intimate indoor setting but we sat in the beautiful outdoor patio with heat lamps. And then the food! Vegan sushi may not be on everyone's list but for those that do have it on, Shojin is a must visit! We went with the Omakase and every dish was so flavorful and unique. Good portions as well and obviously a lot of variety. The service was authentic, not rushed and thoughtful. Highly recommend and cannot wait to take other members of my circle that would appreciate such a unique experience.

Everything was delicious here. We got the gyoza, snap peas with plum so delicious and then the spicy ramen which was very earthy. We got 2 rolls one of them had pumpkin and chickpea topping which was interesting. The desserts we ordered was the matcha strawberry cake my boyfriend loved it, for me it was too much coconut flavor, but I loved the caramel sea salt chocolate mousse which was absolutely amazing. The wait staff was very attentive almost a little too much. The woman's bathroom was clean with a nice toilet with heated seat.

We tried their tasting menu and the ambiance was beautiful and their service is incredible. Food was okay for me because I am not a big fan of the mushrooms but the things I really loved were dynamite roll sushi, dragon roll sushi and the crunchy tiger sushi was pretty good. Their gyoza was also delicious. I believe their menu has changed recently in the past few months and maybe there are better options now.

Incredible experience. Service is speedy, kind and attentive. I ordered their tasting menu which had their best selections. (maple glazed brussel sprouts, crunch tiger sushi, lions mane karaage) were my faves. Not pictured... too busy eating lol. The ambiance in the restaurant has a nice cozy vibe. Perfect for a solo dinner, date night or small birthday celebration. Looking for vegan Japanese food done well, look no further!

Tonight was a try-the-whole-menu (OK, almost!) kind of night at Shojin, from the Best of Sushi to hand rolls to ramen & drinks. If you plan to attempt the same, I would recommend a party of 4-5+ -- and we were lucky to have gotten a gift card for the holidays. My top 5 picks: 1. Truffle California Roll - winner of the night! 2. Saturday Night Fever - close 2nd 3. Dragon Roll 4. Baked Scallop Roll 3.0 5. Crunchy Tiger Thanks Shojin for having us! Bonus for the fancy Japanese toilet in the ladies' room!

Absolutely magical!! Could not recommend this place enough. The food is not only delicious but it's all truly an experience. Each dish is clearly made with intention, and their attention to the details is what makes it so special. The staff was lovely and friendly. The entire restaurant is organic, vegan, and gluten free so I was truly in heaven. But whether you're vegan/gluten free or not, you will find that the food is flavorful, high quality and beautifully executed. Everything was great but I especially loved the Black Garlic Ramen and Orange Yuzunade and special shout out to the tempura enoki mushrooms on top of the Ramen: Ramen Revolution 3.1... those were so tasty

DUCK SHOYU RAMEN Slight smoky flavor of the duck, tender, juicy and moist. No weird gamey flavor. So beautifully cooked, I'm still dreaming of it while I write this! Ramen had a wonderful bouncy chew. The broth was satisfyingly rich, very clean in flavor. There was an oil from the chicken broth, yet it was not a slick oil that leaves an oily mouthfeel. But it was a very comforting broth. Loved this ramen experience! Recommend for anyone who wants to try something different and move away from the typical tonkatsu broth ramen. HIBACHI GRILLED CHICKEN DON Got this as a combo meal with the ramen. This was not good. The chicken had char grill marks, which appeared promising, but the char taste overpowered the flavor of the chicken. The rice had a spicy furikake on top, which had spicy flavors, which I did not like. The rice was slightly dry too. They added salmon roe, which was the only highlight of the dish. Did not finish it and I do not recommend this dish. CUSTOMER SERVICE It was okay. Only one server working. She was straight to the point. But was not rude. YOU CAN ORDER VIA QR CODE There's a QR code that can be scanned from your table. You can order and pay from that QR code as well. Haven't tried it, but it seems very convenient. It's a good option if the restaurant is busy and you want to hurry and place your order. INDOOR + OUTDOOR SEATS AVAILABLE Indoor and outdoor seats available. Bar seats, table for 4, smaller tables for 2. Outdoor tables might be able to accommodate larger groups. There was a group of 8 people (coming in and out of the group table) to my left and seated indoors. They looked uncomfortable and crammed together. Best to come in smaller groups or split tables.

It immediately sets the tone for a meal rooted in traditional technique, yet open to a more modern, elevated interpretation. Yakitori here follows a philosophy deeply embedded in Tokyo's top counters, full utilization of the bird, precise binchotan grilling, and a deliberate pacing that emphasizes progression. Within this framework, I explored a more contemporary pairing approach. Elite "Cult" wines into a setting traditionally dominated by beer, sake, and shochu A bottle of Chateau Petrus kicks off the early progression. Its plush plum fruit and silky tannins align with the smoky depth of the grill, particularly alongside lightly charred chicken skewers where restraint in seasoning allows the wine elegance to surface. My approach tonight reflects a growing high end dining trend seen across Tokyo's top yakitori-ya, where prestigious Bordeaux and Napa cult wines are increasingly paired with yakitori. Bringing that perspective to Culver City, the contrast becomes intentional, humble, fire driven cuisine meeting some of the world's most coveted bottles. As the meal progress, the pairing shifts into a high gear, Screaming Eagle alongside Petrus elevates the wagyu into something far beyond traditional yakitori. Both wines concentration and structure cut cleanly through the beef's rendered fat, creating a powerful interplay between richness and precision. Even beef tendon, often seen as a more rustic skewer, takes on a refined dimension here. Against the backdrop of these world class wines, its savory glaze and charcoal kissed exterior provide a compelling contrast to the wines depth and smooth textures. Coming up next are the sake, Fudoh Junmai Daiginjo offers a composed, textural counterpoint. Its rounded umami and gentle fruit sweetness integrate seamlessly with tare-glazed skewers, while a clean finish resets the palate between richer bites and the Tenko 40 Muroka Nama introduces a more expressive, energetic layer. Paired with chawanmushi, sashimi, and lighter preparations, its fresh aromatics and subtle acidity bring lift and contrast, expanding the range of the meal beyond what wine alone could achieve. What I am experimenting here tonight are full of contrast, charcoal and silk, fat and structure, tradition and reinterpretation. Pairing wines like Petrus with yakitori may seem unconventional to a lot of you, but within the context of modern Tokyo dining, it feels increasingly natural. Here in Los Angeles, Gokigen Tori captures a glimpse of that evolution, where even the most traditional skewers meet the world's most prestigious glass. As always, I'll let the photos speak for the rest of the fun.

The yakitori is the best I've tasted in LA so far. It is also the most expensive. I've been to Saijo (not bad but more American palette), Nanbankan (disgusting), and Kappo Miyabi (acceptable). The chicken here tasted so tender and fresh and I could tell the ingredients were top quality. There were some very authentic daily specials on the menu like Sakuradai sashimi, Japanese Spanish mackerel, and firefly squid. Usually the firefly squid I've had were marinated and preserved with a funk to them but these were very fresh! I love that they get fresh fish flown in Japan and the sashimi was cut pretty well, too and served at the right temperature. Nothing worse than veiny hard cold fish. We also ordered the chicken soup and the minced chicken stone pot rice. I don't think the rice was worth it because the wait was too long and didn't have the right texture imo, too soft. The chicken soup was super basic, just meat and broth but wow SO delicious and comforting! The best chicken soup I've ever had. Apps were good, too. I love they had authentic feeling Japanese pickles. The mentaiko however was too salty. Menu said there would be otoshi (cover charge cabbage salad) just like in Japan for $5 but they didn't serve it. Probably because people didn't like the idea you have to opt out since this isn't a thing in America. I appreciated the thought. It adds to the authenticity of the restaurant and brought a bit of nostalgia. I also ordered a glass of sake and the waitress told me to say when to stop but I did not understand stand her and said nothing. She poured until the cup and the box underneath overflowed! Ended up with 3 glasses full. Didn't mean to be shameless but appreciated the authentic generous Japanese hospitality for sure. They have a great sake selection too, many easy izakaya style drinkers such as one of my favorites, Dewazakura Izumi Judan "Tenth Degree". You won't find this sake at fakey fake fusion Japanese places. The only thing I did not like about the restaurant was the wait staff was weird. They were mostly Eastern European women with blonde hair (all working at an authentic Japanese restaurant???) and it was hard to understand our waitress because of her accent. She also had a perpetual frown on her face. She seemed angry to serve us. Not sure what was up with that. I don't really knock any stars off for service though unless it's egregiously bad or non-existent. I would reserve the chef's counter next time to just interact with the chefs as they are definitely Japanese. Update: It was so good, I went back again! I have to say the food that comes out of the back kitchen is better than the yakitori. Presentation and knife skills are top notch. The mini tori chicken ramen is the top 3 I've every had in my life. The broth was so flavorful but light. The noodles were the right texture and the toppings were cooked PERFECTLY. I highly recommend their soups and daily specials! (Ask for the chalk board).

It's a small space but it doesn't feel crammed, it's cozy and really well kept. The quality and freshness of the fish is impossible to beat. The nigiri melts in your mouth. The best part of coming to dinner here is their prefix meal options. When my boyfriend and I come together we never have to strategize what to get. I always order the Uzumaki & he gets the Uzumaki Plus prefix meals & we each get a miso soup. The ceviche sampler leaves you wanting more each time, the edamame starter is the perfect size, and with each bite of the nigiri I'm smiling and nodding my head in disbelief. You get to choose between two cut rolls with the Uzumaki prefix meals, either the crunchy shrimp or spicy tuna -- the shrimp is my favorite. We decided to try the chocolate donut with vanilla ice cream today and it did not disappoint. Now to the service -- we've never had better service. Each employee greets you with a smile, and as soon as your plate is empty or a piece of trash shows up on your table the staff immediately takes it away. I personally love eating the pickled ginger and some places can be stingy, not this place! Immediately they are bringing us more ginger, water, etc whatever it is, without us asking. It's incredible the attention to detail the staff has and they make coming back such a warm and friendly experience. The cherry on top? There's free parking in a structure attached to the building. We recommend parking in the structure over the street as sometimes there can be interesting characters outside. Here's our selects, ranked favorite first. ***Amberjack belly - this was my personal fav. It was thick, umami on instant bite where I could taste that it was coming from the fish itself. So delicious. **Seared toro (+truffle soy) - obviously. Super tender, seared perfectly, and truffle is a perfect match for the butteryness MP was $22. Wish it was a bit thicker, cause I've had it thick at a different omakase and it was unbeatable. It would be worth the extra! ***Seared Gindara - they had sashimi of black cod! It's one of my favorites grilled and loved that I got to try it as a raw nigiri. Flavoring was perfect and having it seared was a nice touch. **Seared salmon belly (+truffle soy) - like the toro, it's buttery and goes great with the truffle pairing. It's super soft and tender. Wish it was a bit thicker on this piece too! *Special Albacore - flavoring was with olive oil. Unique and paired well!! I was lowkey sad when they took the plate away so fast bc any basic roll dipped in olive oil + ponzu tasted so much better haha. Butterfish (daily special) - super soft & tender *Spicy yellowtail hand roll - seems like their spicy rolls are popular! Loved that it had right amount of spiciness, sesame, and not too salty. Tekka salmon hand roll & Salmon & Avocado roll - my bear friend loves his salmon, they're simple and clean, and have a good amount of salmon We also had banana tofu donut with pistachio ice cream! I've always wanted to try healthier Ring baked fonuts made from tofu and I'm glad I got to try it! Soft, just enough sweet. But pistachio ice cream was too icy. Service was super kind and fast. It felt like one of those slow, cozy days where time doesn't rush you…read more I met up with my college friend after what felt like forever, and somehow we both landed on the same craving--ramen. No debate, no hesitation. Just ramen. I had tried this spot at another location before and remembered liking it, so it felt like a safe, comforting choice for a long overdue catch-up. We got there at that in-between hour... not quite lunch, not quite dinner. The kind of time where the restaurant feels like it's just exhaling. It was completely empty except for us, which honestly made everything feel a little more intimate--like the space was ours for the afternoon. We sat down and immediately slipped into conversation, picking up right where we left off after graduation. Life updates, little wins, quiet struggles... the kind of conversation that only comes easy with people who've known you for years. And in between all that, our mouths were busy. The ramen came out hot, comforting, and exactly what we needed. Rich broth, satisfying noodles--one of those meals where you don't even realize how hungry you were until you take the first bite. We kept pausing mid-sentence just to take another bite, then laughing because we couldn't decide what deserved more attention: the food or the conversation. Service was really attentive without being intrusive. They somehow knew when to check in and when to let us just exist in our little bubble. The music was soft, not overpowering, so we never had to raise our voices or repeat ourselves--something I appreciate more and more these days. We stayed longer than we probably planned, but it didn't feel rushed at all. Just two old friends, warm bowls of ramen, and a space that let us slow down for a bit. Definitely one of those simple meals that turns into a really good memory.

I tried some karaage to start. It was two delicious hunks of meat, with a thick and crunchy shell containing a juicy and flavorful interior. It's also kind of hard to mess up fried chicken. For the main deal, I opted for the yuzu shoyu ramen. The bowl is put-together aesthetically, and it has flavorful components. I just couldn't get over this weird sensation coming from the yuzu. Perhaps I've grown too accustomed to rich and savory tonkotsu ramens... Afuri is clear about what it does and it definitely achieves its goal. Whether you'll like it or not is up to you. Nonetheless, I'm glad I tried it.
