I accidentally walked past Shokuiku. When my friend suggested we meet for a raw vegan lunch I was expecting something full of incense and second-hand furniture. I realised my error and circled back. Inside Shokuiku is contemporary and minimalist; understated but clearly cared for. It feels almost scientific, which is appropriate because the food here explores something new rather than once again walking the well worn path of typical vegan food.
This difference is apparent in the lunchtime menu. There are two options: large plate (~$15) and small plate (~$10). The plates apparently change everyday, but when we went we were served a couple of Japanese inspired salads (one seaweed based, one carrot based) dehydrated biscuits, and this really amazing cashew dip. There are also lots of smoothies and other raw elixirs. The elixirs we tried sounded like medicine on the menu - too healthy to taste good - but they were actually delicious. I can't even describe the taste because I have tasted nothing like it previously.
Shokuiku isn't going to satisfy everyone. If you want eggs benedict and a chicken parma, you won't find it here. But if you are looking for some tasty, healthy, well priced, and avant-garde food, I would highly recommend Shokuiku. I expect this place will become an institution. read more
