I visited over Valentine's Day weekend with friends, and while the food was once again good, the service and management issues were impossible to ignore. Our server was absolutely busting his butt trying to cover the entire dining room. He told us someone had called out, and it showed. He was taking orders, tending bar, running food, and doing everything he could to keep up. At one point, I even saw the cook dropping off food. We waited over an hour for a very simple breakfast. To make matters worse, their coffee machine wasn't working during brunch, which is kind of a wild miss. I ended up going to the bakery next door just to get coffee. The whole time, there was no manager in sight helping the staff or addressing the situation. I can only hope they were out trying to buy a coffee machine at Target. The bigger issue is that this doesn't feel like a one-off. I've dined here three times in the last two years, and every time I come in expecting it to be slow because staffing and service seem to be an ongoing problem. On a prior visit dining in the evening we were sat upstairs in what appeared to be in cheap event furniture they had rented last minute because they were over sold for the night. At least that is what our server shared and also noted staffing is an issue because the manager is trying to save money. Management really needs to get a handle on that, because the staff that do show up are clearly trying. A couple of notes on the space too: the oversized chairs in the dining room feel unnecessary for the size of the tables, and the tacky soundproof panels do nothing for the aesthetic. The panel nearest our table even looked like it had food splatter on it, which didn't exactly elevate the brunch vibe. Overall, Shorebird has strong food and a nice setting, but the management and operational issues keep dragging the experience down. read more

Elevated yet casual dining. I'm new to Palm Desert and this is the first restaurant I've dined at on El Paseo. It was a wonderful experience and a great way to start off many dining adventures. Located on the corner of El Paseo and the 74, this restaurant has ample parking in the large lot off of Frontage Road, behind Shorebird. My visit was on a Friday, late afternoon at happy hour. We sat at the bar. Seating was easy but as it got later, the crowd grew. The vibe was sophisticated and social with a live musician. The menu was filled with a wonderful selection of coastal-inspired steak and seafood options. We opted for 2 sushi rolls and veggie tacos. Our food was presented in a timely manner, was beautifully plated and in good portion. Everything was delicious and filled with unique flavors. Service was outstanding. The person working behind the bar was helpful and friendly. Prices were reasonable esp during happy hour. I look forward to my next visit. read more

Food was great. Service in the lounge was pretty terrible. I had the deviled eggs, el paseo roll & green chili pork soup. Everything was fantastic, good flavors and portion size. The service just sucked so bad. Initially the bartender came to take our drink order and appetizer order. They were out of the beer my husband wanted. The bartender brought us over a beer that was overflowing & spilling down the sides of the glass. After about 30 minutes passed, someone else came by to see if we "needed anything" but it wasn't clear if our waiters had swapped or what happened - but we still hadn't place our main food order because the bartender never came back after getting our drink order. Our appetizer was nigiri & they brought it out without chopsticks or soy sauce and disappeared for 15 minutes so we couldn't eat it. Overall it was such a weird service experience... Shorebird was everything I wanted it to be and then some. Beautiful decor, stiff drinks, and a stellar menu with some many amazing looking appetizers, raw bar, and mains to choose from. The menu at Shorebird has always been calling to me - I'm a sucker for the classics like deviled eggs and wedge salads but also anything raw like oysters or a solid sushi menu will have me running in. Their mains are also note worthy, from ribeyes, to scallops and risotto - I don't know how you don't come in here and order one of everything. It takes a stellar chef and team to execute such a variety of options and after eating here tonight I can assure you they definitely hit the mark and every bite was fabulous. In true sugar hook fashion, we ordered a lot... I will always start with a Crisp, extra dirty, grey goose martini with blue cheese stuffed olives when it's on the menu. For starters had the: - Loaded Devil Eggs - Wedge Salad with Rotisserie Chicken - Lido Sushi Roll For a main I had to go with their Scallop Dish. * The Lido Roll was one of the best sushi rolls I've had this year. I need this roll on my death bed. Simple in some ways, crab on the inside fresh salmon on the outside, but the heavenly sauce on the outside and the unique seven spiced pineapple on the inside was a game changer * The Butter Based Scallops with mussels, bacon, and a potato chowder sauce was phenomenal. Decadent and awe worthy. I don't get to order scallops often but these made the wait well worth it. This spot is a favorite of mine for a night out with the girls. The food is delicious, the ambiance is inviting, and the service is always top-notch. Cindy, the host is absolutely amazing. She's warm, enthusiastic, and consistently goes above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Her energy truly adds to the experience. I highly recommend the Jay Bird's Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Balboa Roll, both are packed with flavor. The drinks here are fantastic too, Rolando the bartender is the best, his drink recommendations are always spot-on, and everything he makes is absolutely delicious. My wife and I returned from a week in Hawaii to learn that the Shorebird was permanently closed! We had recently found our new favorite dining spot in Palm Desert and are sorely disappointed! The tacos and cocktails were excellent, the service was great, and the prices were very reasonable. Shorebird offers a comfortable, upscale ambiance and very tasty food with menu options likely to satisfy any type of appetite or craving. We enjoyed crab cakes (done nice and crispy on the outside, as requested) and truly delicious Carne Adovado tacos with guacamole and pico de gallo. Also an excellent house Old Fashioned, AND we got to see the Bears win! This was our third visit and Shorebird has earned its place in our regular restaurant rotation. read more

Shorebird is a very upscale restaurant with a luxury feel. We got a window seat on the ground floor. We didn't go upstairs, where we were offered. The skirt steaks were done medium rare, as requested. The potatoes are baked, smashed, and quick fried to perfection. Oh, so good. We split the salad, a wedge salad they chopped and split for us. Delicious. I don't get steaks at restaurants often, so I was delighted that it was done as I requested, medium rare. The bread is served on request only, which my mate overheard at the other table. It was very delicious as well. The waiter was super, recommending items off the menu. I asked "this or that" type questions and listened to the responses. Zing.....We spent our 50th Valentine's day at Shorebird. As expected the place was packed. We waited in the chairs up front while the music banged away. I was thinking "man, i hope they do not seat us up front near the music. I am already deaf ". That was not the case as they called my name and lead us to the stairs. Wait...there are stairs? First time here. Yep there is a whole upstairs. And apparently they have an elevator if you need one. We were seated in a nice cozy seat near the window next to the sushi team. The best news was it quiet. We could talk. We stated with the shrimp appetizer. Really good. We shared the pork chile stew. This was by far the hands down best dish of the meal. My wife is from New Mexico. So she chopped up the wonderfully smoked chile on the side and added it to the stew. This dish is to die for. We never eat or order pork but this time we doubled down. We next shared the pork tacos. Another killer dish. It comes with 4 micro tortillas but do not be fooled. There was a massive amount of pork along with condiments. Way more than you can pile on the tacos. The service was quality but erratic in followup. There would be an onslaught of service followed by an uncomfortable period of time before next contact. I think, quite unsubstantiated that the servers were running up and down the stairs. Maybe they had to stop for an oxygen tank break? I do not know. You tell me. One of the best restaurants on El Paseo, and in the Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage area. Been here twice.... for a birthday and an anniversary and both times the food was excellent. From the crabcakes and scallops to the El Paseo roll .... to the cocktails and the Cubano sandwich. Everything was absolutely delicious. Was a little disappointed that I mentioned that it was our anniversary when I made the reservation and that was ignored. A little piece of cake on a plate would've been a nice touch. I loved the food and the service. I was disappointed however to be seated next to two parties both with dogs. Inside! In the main dining area. I know there are pet friendly restaurants and that is fine on a patio but in a fine dining establishment there should be some standards. The dogs were barking at each other at one point. We noticed this restaurant whenever we drove by El Paseo and we were excited to try it out. I've seen the restaurant out in the OC and excited to try this location close by. The restaurant had lots of seating. It's two stories and we were seated on the second floor. There were two other rooms we passed that had lots of seating as well. It's nice to know they can accommodate larger parties if they needed to. I do think they need to put some felt pads on the bottom of the chairs. When the guests would pull the chairs out to sit or stand up, it would rub against the floor and cause a high pitch sound that is very unpleasant. Food wise, they had plenty of options to choose from. We got the items listed below: Appetizers: -Hokkaido Scallops: the scallops themselves were cooked really good and the mirin butter glaze added to the flavor. -Kurobuta Pork Belly: the actual pork belly was dry and tough. However the picked apple and yuzu marmalade were a good addition. I think if the pork belly was crispy and not dry it would have tasted better. Main Dish: -Faroe Islands Salmon Mignon: The salmon was so delicious. It was flaky and had so much flavor. I loved the cauliflower rosemary sauce. It really brought the dish together. -Filet Mignon: The steak itself was average. The sauce on top was the real show stopper. Dessert: -Valrhona Chocolate Brownie: It's your typical sundae brownie but I did appreciate the salted caramel sauce and walnuts with it. I would recommend it. This place is incredibly expensive, and aggressively mediocre. Rock shrimp appetizer wasn't bad, but $23 for 4 scallops the size of nickels? Scallops were underwhelming, served skewered with wood. The kind of thing you expect at a buffet. My skirt steak was overcooked, my wife's Chilean sea bass was $58 for what looks like a 5oz portion. It was unseasoned. We asked for salt, an empty salt grinder was brought. Had to ask the hostess for another. Fries also unseasoned. Price for 2 apps, 2 enteees and a mock tail - $175. $210 with tip. As a true PD local, I highly doubt this place will be around long. On the positive side, it's nice in there and service is good. $10 for a double Espresso might be the absolute highest price I've ever seen in my life. It's $6 at the Ritz Carlton. As any good Yelper would do, after being invited to dinner at Shorebird by a friend I checked out the Yelp reviews. I took the reviews with a grain of salt and went to dinner with ZERO expectations... this way I wouldn't be disappointed. Although some of the reviews complained about service, atmosphere, and food... Shorebird showed-OUT! Literally EXCEEDED my expectations in all areas! Our dinner reservations were for 6:30 PM. We arrived promptly and we're warmly greeted at the door. Our friend who invited us to dinner here was already waiting for us at the bar that was crowded with lots of people enjoying cocktails and conversation. The restaurant was brightly lit and beautifully decorated in light tones, which I prefer. We were led upstairs and out to the exterior patio, which overlooked El Paseo. Sadly, I failed to take a photograph of the beautiful Vista with the street line trees lit up with twinkly lights. We went on to order our cocktails and sashimi. Michael was our waiter and was Knowledgeable of the menu, was able to answer all of our questions, and took great care of us throughout the night. We had not seen our friend for a while and we lingered over dinner, a second round of cocktails, and then dessert and coffee. By the time the check came and we took care of it. We made our way out to find that the restaurant was completely empty and everyone was in "cleanup mode. We had no idea that we had stayed so long and went on to apologize to the staff. Everyone was absolutely kind and reassured us that it was absolutely their pleasure and that we've not been an inconvenience in anyway. Our friends vehicle that had been parked by valet had already been brought around and was parked in front of the restaurant for her. This experience for me was a good example of the need to take all reviews with the proverbial "grain of salt" and then go on to have your own experience. We had a reservation and showed up a few minutes early. We were asked to sit and wait for our table to be ready. There were no empty tables, but a couple was finishing up. They left, the table was made ready, and we were seated. A server came over and said he would bring us water. When he came back, we placed our cocktail order. Our drinks were delivered by someone other than our server. Our guy didn't come back to take our food order. Eventually a man came over and asked if we had ordered our food yet. Nope! So he took the order. The dining room is small. A sign said 44 was the maximum occupancy. I counted 29 people in there and it was loud! There didn't seem to be anything to absorb any noise. The whole place has a clean, modern look and was missing any kind of warmth. Our food was good, but pricy for what we had. We don't mind spending the money, but we didn't feel the meal was worth the bill we received. If we come back to this area, we wouldn't come back to this restaurant. read more

This was the worst dining experience everyone in my party has ever encountered! First, we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated even though we had reservations. Next, they sat us at an outdoor table that did not have sufficient heaters for the area (so we had to keep our coats on all night). The worse part was the length of time it took to get fed - we waited for our food for over one and a half hours. The service was lacking. An example was I had to ask 5 times to get sugar for my iced tea. Finally, we were in the restaurant for 3hrs 45 minutes to get hamburgers and sandwiches! Terrible, terrible experience. Are few additional comments: the manager not only lied about why there was such a long wait, he didn't seem to care; rather than offer bread, we had to ask for it because we were starving; the hamburgers came out overcooked and almost inedible. In an effort to make more money for Christmas, Shorebirds way overbooked. The irony is, we used to be loyal customers that frequently went there. They have now lost us as customers, as well as the other people in our party. We dined at Shorebird in November with a party of six. We were not verbally informed that an automatic gratuity was included, though it may have been noted somewhere on the menu. My father paid the bill and asked me to add a gratuity for him, not realizing one had already been applied. We discovered the next day, once we had time to review the receipt, that the tip was already included. Since then, we have called four times and emailed the manager, Rodger, but have not received a response or return call. Please be more aware than I was. Delicious! We went for a special occasion and had a lovely dinner. We split the wedge salad (great blue cheese). I had the swordfish taco platter with homemade corn tortillas. Sooo good! My dad had the scallops and said they were good too. His margarita had a rim of homemade cilantro lime salt. Nice touch. Staff was amazing and friendly without being stiffly formal. Tough reviews on here and I'm not sure why. Consider the crowd I guess. Even the table water was delicious. Beautiful atmosphere. Only feedback is I prefer if they put salt and pepper at the table so I don't feel link I'm insulting the kitchen by asking for some. The overstuffed bacon & eggs are, as advertised, very overstuffed deviled eggs. You get four to an order, and it was actually more than two of us needed. There is so much filling and it's very rich, maybe too much cream cheese for my taste. Fun presentation though and worth trying. Would be great for four to share. My cuban sandwich was good. The bread was soft and the roast pork was really juicy so the pork was the main attraction. Reheated well the next day too. The onion rings were AMAZING. Best onion rings I've had in a looong time. The batter was absolutely perfect, so flavorful and exactly the right batter-to-onion ratio. What a treat! Cocktails and sushi menu sound really good, I'll have to go back to try more. read more

The ambiance of service of Shorebird are outstanding. The feel inside is upscale, welcoming and relaxing. They have space downstairs, upstairs and on an outdoor balcony. I've read people upset having to take the stairs to get to the table, rest assured there is an elevator if you need it, just ask where it is. We were seated upstairs on a quiet-ish Monday evening. The acoustics are such that even a half full restaurant can be loud so beware of that. Our server was very friendly, accommodating and on top of his game. So much so that he noticed that my burger was not cooked to my desired temperature as soon as he saw it cut in half on my plate and assured me another was on its way. He was very apologetic but I understand that happens and was fine to wait until the replacement came. A manager delivered the replacement and said they would comp my burger for the inconvenience which I thought was very kind. My burger was good but nothing to rave about. We had the brownie dessert and that was fantastic - definite recommend. I will go back for brunch or lunch to try some of their other menu items. read more
