Went to try this after 10 years since it's a Washington institution..... and nope. This location is much cleaner than the run down dump in downtown Washington. Walked in to see the usual rif raff that hangs in dirty parts of Washington. I ordered 2 hotdogs with everything and fries with gravy. The hot dogs were sour with cheap ingredients. The fries were ok with descent salty brown gravy. I guess if your from Washington, you wouldn't know the difference between good and bad food so they say it's great because they live here. read more

It's a decent quick lunch, and but frankly not worth what the tab amounted to. The dogs are good, crisp break on them, although a little on the small side. The chili sauce is scant and really flavorless. The fries were good and crisp, but the gravy wasn't really as good as some rave about. They would have been better with ketchup instead of the bland gravy. That being said, I wouldn't go out of my way to go there again. I've eaten here twice. Once back in 2007 before my wife and I moved down south (where I'm from). My wife is from the area and boasted about their food. The first time I had a chicken sandwich, which was obviously a frozen patty between two hamburger buns. The whole 7 years we spent in Arkansas, she talked about how she missed it. We moved back recently and my wife convinced me that I had to try their hot dogs because that's what their known for. So, I decided to give them another chance. I had high hopes that I was going to love this place, seeing as how it's a favorite for the locals. So, I ordered two dogs with everything and fries with gravy on the side and my wife ordered the same. You know, the real Shorty's experience. Upon receiving my food I was extremely skeptical. The chilli, what little of it there was, was very bland and reminded me of canned dog food. Nothing like the hearty chilli we have down south. The onions were chopped to death, some what like the dehydrated onions you would find on a McDonald's burger. The hot dog was edible, the bun, nice and soft. I was extremely confused as to why everyone raved about them. Then the fries. They were cooked nicely. Just the way I liked them so I really wanted to love them. They seemed to have absolutely no flavor. Maybe the gravy would help? Nope. The gravy tasted like it came from a packet, way too salty and just plain sad. I'm not sure if it's just a cultural difference. I really wanted to love this place. I mean absolutely no disrespect, this is just my outsider opinion. I feel like I can make a better dog at home. The prices are cheap and the atmosphere is friendly. It's just not for me. read more

Great family friendly restaurant. Nobody does hotdogs like Shorty's. The gravy fries are great too. Simple good food!
