Lock chin moo - Steamed Pork Balls and chilli dip
    Laura F.

After two unsuccessful attempts to try Siam Smiles, I finally managed to get a table here yesterday! Hurrah. Just off George St in the heart of China Town is Siam Smiles Supermarket. It's a small door with an even smaller sign, so it's incredibly easy to walk past if you're not looking for it. Siam Smiles noodle bar is situated inside this Supermarket - no more than 10 tables are set up next to the isles of food, which is why it's been so difficult to get a table in the past. It's small, compact and you're surrounded by people popping in for their groceries, which I find really cool. The setup is very basic, but that is what I liked about it. It's nothing like being in a fancy Thai restaurant, but more like the type of eatery that you would actually find in Thailand - very authentic and I loved it. The menu is quite large and I could have eaten or tried most things, so after taking a while to decide we decided to order 2 dishes each and 1 to share. I went for the Kaow Moo Dang: Steamed rice with BBQ roast pork and topped with red BBQ pork sauce and the Kow Pad Talay - Fried rice with seafood and vegetables. Both were superb!!! The squid in the seafood fried rice was cooked perfectly!! I persevered with my chopsticks but had to use a fork in the end to get to all of my rice. Neil C. went for the Kaow Moo Grob: Steamed rice with crispy pork belly and the Kuai Tiew Ped: Yellow noodles with duck soup - he liked them both. I tried some of the pork belly and it was cooked amazingly well. And we went for the Lock chin moo - Steamed Pork Balls and chilli dip to share between us. This was MORE than enough food for two and we left feeling full and also smiling! Despite the food being cooked by 1 chef in the tiny kitchen at the back of the supermarket, it was served very quickly! I also found it to be very good value with most dishes ranging from £6 - £8. They don't serve alcohol here, which is to be expected I guess and with it being a supermarket it was quite cold inside - so bring a jumper. I can't fault this place, the food or the service. 5*

TL;DR - Hidden gem serving fantastic Thai and other east Asian dishes. Well this was a nice surprise! In Chinatown you'll find this place if you look carefully - it's down a flight of stairs, located in a basement. About half of the unit is an east-Asian supermarket, but the other half is laid out with tables and chairs. From the outside you'd assume they may do a couple of dishes, but the menu is surprisingly extensive offering all kinds of amazing things. We both had bowls of noodles (one egg, one glass). I can't recall the names of the dishes, but everything on the menu has a code and ours were SN2 and SN5... and they were delicious! Prices are very reasonable and everything is cooked fresh to order. There were plenty of other people coming in who were clearly regulars. An absolute delight and we will definitely, definitely be back very soon.

This place came up on our radar when Marina O' Laughlin dropped that review on the Guardian. We had one of those unlikely Sunday when a few of us were free for some food and drink action in town which provided a perfect excuse to try out Siam. Glad we did, the food was delicious. There are a few "traps" so to speak as the food is so authentic you may not have had it before. One of us ordered the Thai sausages with ginger and cabbage.... And that's exactly what it was. Droplets of juicy and flavoursome sausages, slices of raw ginger, whole bird eye chillis and bits of white cabbage. I'm sure we missed a trick but aside from the sausages we weren't sure what we were supposed to do with the rest, pardon our ignorance. The other dishes we chose were super good though, pork perfectly cooked, duck curry seasoned and perfumed fantastically. All coming with strange fruits and vegetables I've never seen before. The concept and lay out might be confusing at first as it is an Asian grocery shop with a few tables. The drinks are made by the same person manning the till and there's only one "chef". Which means when the 4 of us ordered all at the same time, the dishes arrived one by one, as they were cooked and the by the time the 3rd dish arrived, the first of us who got served had finished. But since you're supposed to share the food it should not be a problem. I strongly recommend the Kow Pad Moo Grob, pork belly with fried rice and all sorts, bloody good stuff. Also try their Thai cold teas and other drinks.

I heard good things about this place from MEN being cheap and delicious but for the price you paid for it isn't really. The price was average £8.50/£9.00 but from that I could go somewhere decent like busaba for a nice rice dish, especially 50% off Monday. I've ordered number 2 - rice noodles with meat balls and pork and husband ordered number 21 roast meat with rice. Both dishes looks like left over from what was sold night before. The pork was dried. Broth was nice but I've been given mostly stalks from choi sum rather the actual choi sum. Also it took me 2 mouthful ( roughly 3tbsp) of noodles in the bowl. You are only given really small pieces of pork. I really expected more, really disappointed with this place.

Kuai Tiew Ped – yellow noodles with duck and duck soup with coriander and morning glory

On a cold and windy day (it doesn't seem to be any different in this Manchester), I descended on Chinatown to see if I could finally break my Siam Smiles virginity (due to lack of tables previously). I ventured to the door, looked down the steps...and lo-and-behold, there was literally nobody else in there! Not sure if it was something I said or smelt of) but I took my (rather basic and very orange) seat and perused the small and uncomplicated menu. As the menu explains they recommend not ordering 'traditional' starters and mains etc, but to order a number of dishes to share and eat as-and-when they arrive freshly-cooked at the table. So...I opted for 3 dishes for that I was admittedly reluctant to share but did. The first dish I chose was the Kuai Tiew Ped - yellow noodles with duck and duck soup with coriander and morning glory. What a dish. Savoury, salty, fragrant, aromatic, with a little heat (as I added some dried chillies from the on-table condiments), and full of depth. I could devour bowl upon bowl of this stuff. The duck was beautifully flavoursome as well with a little crispy skin still remaining in tact. I also ordered the kaow moo grob - steamed rice with crispy pork belly and homemade chilli sauce. Another great dish. The pork was cooked perfectly; soft and moist meat with a heavenly crispy fatty skin on top. When dipped in the hot chilli sauce and combined with the well-cooked white rice it was a fantastic explosion of flavours and textures. The 3rd dish I went for was the lock chin moo - steamed pork balls and chilli dip. I found them...interesting. Not entirely what I was expecting but delicious nonetheless with an intense pork flavour that married well with the very spicy chilli dip. The (slightly) rubbery texture was a little off-putting but I had no issues consuming all but one of them! Overall, Siam Smiles is a rare find and deserving of the praise it has garnered from bloggers around Manchester, and critics nationwide. It's inexpensive (less than £20 for 3 courses and a drink), simple, authentic, but most of all incredibly delicious. So much so in fact, that we have already paid them a return visit, and I'm sure it won't be long before we're there again!

A little gem in Chinatown, it is a unique cafe/supermarket hybrid setting which I have never encountered before, but the food is amazing. Best Thai food in Manchester so far. It tastes like food that I can get on the streets of Bangkok. I have to drop a star because it is not the prettiest place and I believe the price can be a couple of quid cheaper for such a small portion.

We had such a nice evening and dinner was delicious. I ordered the Chicken Sateh for appetizer followed by the Green Curry with Prawns and side of sticky rice for my main meal. The Green Curry was especially tasty and had just enough spice/heat, but nothing too overpowering for me. Highly recommend and I definitely hope to return soon. The prawn crackers here are to die for and I tend to go for the pad thai, veg or chicken as a main. This dish is huge so I usually don't get anything else as I can barely finish the pad thai. The food is delicious, fresh and full of flavour. I've had the curries here before and they've not disappointed either. I can't see myself tiring of this place anytime soon :)

I had never been to 1846 before but looking at photos, a lot of the decor is still the same. It was one of those very warm days in Manchester we had in July - remember them! Actually its apparently a heatwave this weekend! Anyway, arrived at Thai Kitchen and we had a table near-ish the front door - which was open wide to get whatever breeze there was through. I was looking forward to going to Thai Kitchen No.6 after hearing it was a family run business and things are homemade. I heard about it when it was mentioned by chef/restaurateur Gary Usher - Thai Kitchen No.6 is pretty much next door to his restaurant Kala. As I looked through the menu for what food I wanted, the most important at that moment was to see what cold drink they had. Ordered a beer - helped me cool down! For starter, we sort of shared. So I tried some of the Esan Sausage (deep fried Thai sour pork sausage) and the Paw Pia Tod - crispy spring rolls. Both tasted good. Never had Esan Sausage before but tasted good. For the main, I went for the Pineapple prawn fried rice. It tasted good but unfortunately I did not realise it had currants in it - not really a fan of currants (or raisins) so had to pick around the currants - although I did eat some and tasted OK. Maybe absorbed flavour of the fried rice. The pineapple was nice and sweet and fried rice tasty. I should have realised though that it was never going to be a "massive" portion because its served in a pineapple and pineapples are not that big. Next time I go, I think I will go for Hainanese Chicken and Rice - which I almost ordered.

Sadly, they have only had one review since 2016 so perhaps things have changed since then, as my experience wasn't that impressive. On the positive side, I loved the decor, it felt authentic, with an open kitchen towards the back, and Thai themed decor including a map that shown Thailand on the wall. It just felt pretty cool and authentic. The only major problem I had was how cold the restaurant was inside, it was freezing cold, unlike anywhere else in Manchester that day, I was wearing my fully zipped up coat and shivering, despite it being July - which is supposed to be Summer! I was unimpressed with the service, I was not offered a drink upon sitting down, my waiter just sat me down and left me to it, he didn't explain the concept or even ask about my allergies. Another big negative for me was I didn't feel my allergy was taken seriously, I did advise my server I was gluten-free and I explained I had scanned the QR code on the menu for allergy information, she didn't mention anything regarding their allergy policy, nor do anything to give me confidence eating there, I originally wondered if she even heard me mention I had an allergy. I also found it hard to get a staff member's attention when I needed it, such as to request a takeaway box, or even request some more water or the bill. I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai, it looked pretty impressive, but I found the taste to just be OK, I do think the noodles were very heavy and there was nothing to balance it out, there wasn't too much chicken and some of the chicken was chewy (I did enjoy some of the chicken though). I found the sauce to be a little too sweet too, especially towards the bottom of the dish, it became too overpowering and a little sickly, it needed something a little bit more acidic to give it a kick for sure. The food menu was reasonably priced compared to nearby competitions such as Wagamama, combined with a number of promotional offers including a 20% student discount and a 30% discount for NHS healthcare workers. I also didn't like how they added a service charge onto the bill of 10%, this was stated in the small print of the menu, the staff member didn't seem too happy about removing it, they refused to even acknowledge me, even to say "Cheerio" after that. I did also notice a charity fee of £1 added onto the bill, this also annoyed me as I should be able to judge which charities I donate to and when, let alone having it added onto my bill without any mention of who the charity is, or what they do (Unlike the service charge the charity charge was NOT stated on the menu!) 2* - It feels authentic but in many ways, I was let down, if you consider the optional charges they add onto everyone's bill, it is one of the cheaper places for Thai food in town, but I really wouldn't advise going somewhere else.
