Bob & Julie Schimerowski took over the long established resort in 2017 and did a complete renovation. There are six well-cared for cabins that accommodate from two to six bedrooms. The cabins come well equipped with kitchen supplies and are air conditioned. The resort is super kid friendly (but no pets), has the perfect swimming area for kids, as well as a pristine lake. There is an abundance of fish that can be caught from the many docks. There are several pontoon boats that can be rented by the half-day, full day, or week. All other boats and equipment can be used for free. These include peddle boats, canoes, kyacks, peddle bikes, and a water slide, as well as life jackets, paddles, etc. They also have many land games from badminton to corn hole, as well as many others. There is a central lodge with many additional games, as well as ice cream, and a washer dryer (the washer/drier have small charges to use). Bob and Julie add new amenities every year. I really appreciate their responsiveness to any issue, question, or request. They are very friendly, as well as professional. This place deserves six out of five stars!

Cabin F was secluded with trees and just grassy area across the road. The campground was ok. I thought the sites were on the small side. The actual lake with beach area was far from the campground. You would want to drive there. The bath/shower house was in need of a good cleaning or remodel. Overall, a one night stay was just fine.

We have visited Big Kanuna annually for over six years. They have go-carts, bumper boats, and a…read moreminiature golf course. We were last there a few days ago, the week before the 4th of July (2026). We did all three activities. The price for ten tickets (one ticket per ride) is $70. It costs more for ride tickets to buy individually. The go-carts are my favorite (there is a height limit, but there are two cars for a passenger who is under the height limit). The miniature golf course is good, but the bumper boat ride this year was under-filled with water and the was putrid green. The central fountain was turned off. The staff were extreme friendy, but they had only two people for all of the rides (inadequate). Inside, I saw no people in the restaurant and one person selling tickets and managing the ice cream and indoor games. The place seemed to be heading for decline compared to previous years with too few employees and dirty water for the boats. Also, it would be nice for them to offer standard flavors of ice cream (chocolate and vanilla) in addition to the other flavors.

Our MN PGA card brought us here and we really enjoyed it. The forward tees were just under 5100…read moreyards which is a good distance. The front nine was longer and more open and back nine shorter and tighter. A significant amount of rain has hit MN this summer but despite that, the course only had a couple squishy spots. Lots of workers on the course ensuring it was well maintained. The fairways and tee boxes were in good shape. The greens had a nice, true roll. Sand traps were a bit soggy and holding water in some cases (good thing I avoided those). Beautiful flower beds were found throughout. Nice views of the nearby lakes greeted us on some holes. We played in just under 3.5 hours despite having to wait on most of the back nine holes. It was a nice pace. Golf carts did not have GPS. Some of the holes had a golf club holder near the green (first course I've seen that on). Staff was helpful. So glad we found this course.

Fun, quality course. You get what you would expect. The front nine is pretty wide open (not really…read morea fan) but the back nine is beautifully crafted into the woods. The greens are fast and well maintained. The fairways are decent. The clubhouse is small but pretty well-stocked and the restaurant above is some of the best eating in the Willmar area. This club is definitely worth a try, although it can be a bit pricey, particularly on the weekends.

Monson Lake State Park is one of the smaller state parks we've visited. There is a one mile-ish…read morehike between Lake Monson and Lake Sunburg. It's quite wooded and you can't really see either lake from the trail but it does open up in one area to see Lake Monson. On our visit, there had been recent rain and it was quite buggy so bring spray. There was a worker grooming the trail which was nice to see. The bathroom was clean and had sanitizer. Not a ton to do here but we knocked another park off our list.

The kids are paired with an older student to learn the fundamentals. Family night of golfing was a blast especially when most of the adults hadn't ever played!
