We had a vast grassy area all to ourselves, with plenty of large trees to provide shade. Our puppy ran around in peace, with a semi-defined border to ensure she didn't run too far. Sticks as well to play with. Trash can nearby. Easy parking. Clean. Will be missing this park.

If you can add this in with your travels, you won't be upset. I wouldn't go way out of my way to visit, but if you can add it to your itinerary with a less than annoying drive deviation, it is fantastic. Side note, it was raining the day I went. I drove up to the top but couldn't see the view due to the weather. But, I could tell, on a nice day, it would be amazing. Lots of history here. Enjoy!

Call Your Bluff…read more Protected National Monument site that's over 3k-acres and is situated west of Gering, Nebraska. We visited here almost eight years ago on our epic road trip across the US, and I can't believe I forgot to review this place. The Good: *The bluff is an important landmark on the Oregon Trail and there's an Oregon Trail Museum at the base of the bluff. *There's a windy 1.6-mile drive up the Summit Rd to get to the top of Scotts Bluff. There were quite a few cars (the park draws in 100k visitors a year) in front of us, if I remember correctly. But I don't think it took that long to get to the top, because even if it did there some superb views along the way up. *Leashed pets are OK on trails *Free! The Meh: *Only four miles of hikable trails The Ugly: *I wish we had more time to explore and hike the trails, but we had a schedule to keep. Next time, Gadget! Conclusion: Great park that's worth a 1hr detour if you're headed along on this stretch of 80.

This one also supposedly has a pool or something there as well, but this was a stopover point for the kid to play on the equipment and for us to have lunch. Unfortunately, neither the town nor the kid cooperated much in the lunch endeavor, so we had to take it on the road, but this seems like a pretty good park with a very solid range. It also was pretty well maintained, so good on them with that note. Not that I ever will be again by choice, but if you happen to Kimball and need a place to rest for a hot minute and/or let the kid(s) play, this is a pretty good choice.

It's not far at all off I-80, which makes it super convenient, but once you're there it feels like a whole escape. The views are absolutely beautiful -- wide open skies, calming water, and just that tranquil energy that makes you slow down and breathe a little deeper. If you're up for a tiny adventure, there's a slight climb down where you can access the caves and get closer to the water. It's such a cool experience and definitely worth it if you don't mind a little exploring. Whether you're looking for a quiet moment, a scenic drive stop, or a mini adventure, Lake Mac delivers. I'll definitely be back.

Also, it's important to note that this location is about 200yards from a major railway crossing. This equates to high-decible train horns about every 15 minutes day and night. To top that off, the neighboring community (about 100 feet from the edge of the campground sites) have some enthusiastic roosters.

I'm talkings swarms! we camp everywhere, but we left within 12 hours due to the bugs and wind.
