2 Stars - Scheels is great overall, but not for hockey…read more Scheels is a great store for a lot of sporting goods, but if you're looking for hockey equipment, I would honestly recommend going somewhere else. My son recently started getting into hockey, and we went there hoping to get some help with skates and gear. Unfortunately, it was clear pretty quickly that the hockey department just doesn't have staff with much hockey knowledge. Whether it was skates, sticks, or general equipment questions, there really wasn't anyone who seemed confident or experienced enough to help. The most frustrating experience was when we purchased skates and were told they had been sharpened by the Scheels staff. After my son had a very negative experience on the ice, we took the skates to a rink, and the staff there confirmed the blades had not actually been sharpened. That kind of thing makes a big difference, especially when someone is just starting the sport. If you're serious about hockey equipment, save yourself the frustration and go somewhere that specializes in it. Prices are very competitive elsewhere, and the staff actually care and know what they're doing. Pure Hockey on 72nd is absolutely worth the trip. Scheels does a lot of things well, but hockey just doesn't seem to be one of them.

Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience when I back less than 24 hours later to return items. I was met by a very aggressive woman with glasses and a beanie. She told me she could not do anything for my boots return because I had worn them for one day, despite telling her they were super tight and hurting my ankles. She refused to call her district manager or customer service or anyone to get another opinion. She told me I needed to call customer service myself if I had an issue. She then tried to correlate my attempted return to the same as someone she dealt with prior that was arrested and in jail and tried to return the shoes with an unknown substance on them?? This woman clearly needs retrained and or removed from this position. She had ZERO empathy for my situation and seemed to be worried about a $225 return then making a customer happy. I know I am going to seriously reconsider future shopping at 5.11 because of her horrendous attitude and ability to be flexible and problem solve. I called customer service after I left the store and they immediately processed a return and refund. Wow, see there is an exception to most situations.

After searching around the store for a while, Rick came over to help us, and I'm incredibly glad he did. Rick was remarkably patient and genuinely committed to helping us find the right fit. My daughter tried on nearly a dozen different pairs of cleats, and Rick stayed with us through the entire process without ever making us feel rushed or pressured. Anyone who has shopped for kids' cleats knows how frustrating it can get, but Rick handled everything with professionalism and kindness. After two days of searching at different places, Rick was the one who helped us finally find a pair that fit well and worked for her wide feet. The price was very competitive as well! What impressed me most was how comfortable he made the experience for my daughter. She never felt embarrassed or pressured, and Rick treated the whole situation with patience and encouragement. That kind of service is rare. Rick was absolutely fantastic. I wish more retail employees had the tolerance, patience, and customer care he showed us. There's a wide range of sporting gear and accessories including skate guards, nets, and practice goals. It's a thrift type design, so it does depend on what people bring in to sell, but I've never had a hard time finding what I need. They have blade sharpening if you want to bring in your own skates, or they have a huge variety of hockey skates and some figure skates available to buy. Recently, I went in to look for soccer gear. I found matching adult and child soccer balls for my niece and I, and a pair of little cleats for her. They had a huge selection of kids soccer cleats and a good selection of adult ones, too. Pricing is fair, much lower than you'll find buying new and the quality of items is generally very good. The cleats were $15 for small kids cleats, and they were in great condition.
