The other couple women who work here are the same, they don't really acknowledge you much. It must come with the territory, creating a hard shelled appearance. The hard liquor selection is pretty good, the prices a couple dollars cheaper than other places. The wine selection is pretty good for a small place, they carry some nice wines from Argentina and most of the popular ones from Canada and the US. Every now and then I find a unique wine here, so far they have all been good! The prices again are decent for the wines, they have cheaper ones from $10 and up. They have a great selection of international beers. They could use a bit more stock in more premium beers in my eyes. They always have tons of Lucky, Budweiser and Canadian, if you are looking for the cheaper options. They also have a great selection of 325ml liquors. They are open late and offer delivery, I am not sure what the charge for this is. Bow Liquor has done me good and is a great local place to get your liquor necessities!

I've generally found the selection to be surprisingly varied and Joe and his staff to be accommodating and friendly though not all that knowledgeable about their products. However, a recent incident has turned me off the store completely. I stopped by on my way home from Safeway (walking) to pick up a rose for dinner with pork at my aunt's request. I realized that I didn't know all that much about rose and while I was there did a little research on my Blackberry. I can honestly say that I took no more than 5 minutes. An older gentleman, a long time fixture at the store asked me what I was doing in a very unpleasant tone and accused me of spending half an hour in the store. I was flabbergasted and explained exactly what I was doing and stated that I had only spent a few minutes in the store. I was challenged on this - and basically called a liar. Since I was on foot and didn't have time to go elsewhere and didn't want to arrive home empty handed, I reluctantly picked up and purchased a rose (without any help). I called the store on my return, spoke to the cashier, and left a message for Joe to phone me back regarding customer service. I left it at that. I never heard back. I don't know if the message was intercepted or not. (I did not speak to the rude guy.) If there was any concern about my apparent loitering (in a store the size of my bedroom, better lit and well staffed) a simple, "Is there something we can help you with?" would have dealt with that in a cordial and inoffensive manner. You can rest assured that will never patronize that store again. I have already shared my experience with several friends and family.

I personally love to try all kinds of cheapo wines as you can often find some real gems. This is a good store for that. The staff are pleasant and efficient, and if you have a big order, they will carry it out to the car for you. Lots of parking out front. Good value here as they often have promotions and specials. Althought the store is predominantly stocked with wine there is also beer and there are spirits too. :)

I checked out the chilled room with all the beer and couldn't believe the selection! They were well stocked with all the usual brands, but had a thorough selection of international beers too! I've never seen so much beer! As I walked though the isles I noticed that they had some good sales on liquor, some were $5-7 off! On my search for a nice red wine I walked along the wine section, taking note of the featured selections. They carried the common wines from the US and Canada but also had a great selection of Italian and French wines. They even had a decent selection of Chilean wines, most of them were ones I had never come across. I chose one that was on feature, then was asked by a guy if I was finding everything okay. I asked him about the wine I had selected, if it was quite dry. He said it was and asked what I was looking for in a wine. I told him and in no hesitation he pointed out a different selection. So I traded my choice for his recommendation. The prices for wines are very decent, most of them ranging from $10-18. There is also a great premium wine selection ranging from $29 and up. I paid $15 for my wine and it was perfect! The selection and stock at Highlander are excellent! Their website is even worth checking out! I will definitely return to Highlander if I am looking for a new wine, or beer, to try!

I politely answered that I did however I was told that meant I could not come into the store. Unfortunately that is a red line for me. I bike everywhere and it is not safe to carry things on a bike without panniers or a back pack. I use both. It is a small contribution to the environment and to my health. I am fine if you want to check my backpack on the way in and out (if you are nice about it). I am also okay if you want to follow me around the store. Please reconsider your policies. Until you do, I encourage all peddlers and pedestrians to take their business elsewhere.

One staff member let me taste a couple of the wines before buying, which was great. Another suggested a very nice wine based on what I was looking for. I am very happy with their knowledge of wines. As for the rest of the store, I think they have a pretty good selection and have better prices than the Liquor Barn by Safeway (on 12 Ave and 8 St). For someone who doesn't have a car, I am glad this store is within walking distance.

He was boasting that people drive distances because of his unique stock. They also have a list highlighting that which is only stored in the cellar. Intriguing, isn't it? He offered to mail me the entire wine list yesterday and I accepted. However, he didn't keep his promise because I don't have it. I won't judge him for it, though.
