Oh my gawd, could we like, BE any more touristy? This place has been going since I was knee-high to a fire bucket, probably even longer, and some of my fondest memories involve accumulating a plethora of deep fried snacks from here. Mmm, battered fish. Mmm, fresh donuts. Mmm, vinegary chunky chips. Oh and not to forget the candy floss. Mmm, dissolvable cotton wool toothrot. And slush puppies. Mmm, blended frozen toothrot. I used to come here regularly with the brunette as frequent readers of my reviews will know (oh get me, 'frequent readers', it's not like I'm Hadley Freeman or Charlie Brooker or something... although I've yet to achieve my lifetime goal of marrying up one of my closest older friends and Mr Brooker so I can hang out with him all the time - it'd probably be too creepy if I married him myself. Not that hanging out with your friend's husband isn't creepy. Where was I again?) and this was the place we brought our motley crew to when we were redecorating her bedroom as teenagers. We made a right hash of it, and replenishing our energy sources with E-number laden goodness didn't do that any favours. Still, there was nothing nicer than to grab a pile of chips, settle down on the pier, enjoy the sunshine and be a complete Southport cliché. Blackpool, you ain't got nothing on the Port. This is an actual restaurant, believe it or not, with a shop adjacent to it selling all the sweeter stuff which also includes ice cream, popcorn, fudge (mmm, yielding sexual toothrot) and that strangest of candies, rock. I defy anybody to get through a stick of rock in one sitting without checking if they've chipped a tooth. That's like trying to eat a fruit pastille without chewing. Irritatingly impossible. Mmm, gum-shredding... I'll stop now, I promise. Back to the restaurant then, and if it's a nice day you'd be mad to take your fish and chips inside, but with the fickle weather of the North West seaside you might want to exercise caution. If you're outside you get to see just what a very strange building this is, an apt emblem of that wonderful balance between tacky and kitsch. If you want the full on traditional seaside Southport experience you could do far worse than this place on the edge of Funland and Pleasureland. read more

Surprise Surprise seaside lovers, yet another traditional fish 'n' chips shop at the Pier of another British promenade. So, what is it that sets Silcock's apart from other chippies? Well, from my first experience at this chippery, it was easy to see why it is based in a prime location. It couldn't be in a better spot than right next to the Pier and Arcade with the fresh sea breeze and hoards of tourists waiting to fill their tummies. Food is a little on the pricey side but no doubt, some of the best fish 'n' chips I've had. Blackpool, eat your heart out because Southport's Silcock's does wonders. Whether it's haddock, plaice, cod or scampi, you're in for great quality fry ups and some traditional sweets afterwards. So a little fish and chip shop. Eat in or take out and enjoy the sun and a view of the boats on the lake. If it's sunny of course and if the boats are sailing. Again foos was ok. I think it has a better reputation than the reality. All food is fresh but potion size is only mediocre and for the price a few extra chips wouldn't go a miss. I mean spuds are dead cheap! We did sit out and enjoy the scenery except for an annoying singer on the marina who was there to entertain but I'm afraid didn't look as if many were entertained. Again it's good for kids but I have learnt with Southport the idea of going is often better than the experience but I do like it as a seaside destination and weather was lovely so can't complain Was a fund day out! read more

This chip shop is in a prime location right on the pier but close enough to shops for grumbly tummys to be satisfied in minutes. But.. it is definitely not the best fish and chips (or mushy peas) I or my partner have had. In fatc, it was disticntly average and we were a little disatisfid considering our hunger and the price- it is EXPENSIVE. The smaller less shiny chip shops down the road are much better, walk that little bit further and be truly satisfied. Silcocks do hve indoor seating which is an dadvantage over some of the smaller shops but, eating fish and chips indoors off a plate goes against the grain a bit doesn't it? read more

To be blunt, Silcock's is a pretty bog-standard chippy in a pretty bog-standard seaside town. Want some deepfried potatoes and battered fish served in polystyrene? Silcock's has it all. A popular stop for bikers and locals, this place has indoor and outdoor seating and is conveniently placed by the shore and just off the main promenade. We had a classic Cod and Chips with Mushy Peas and all were bang on par with just the right amount of crunchy and squidgy. read more

Oh I did have a chuckle wandering down this street at all the proper seaside touristy shops! There were proper rock shops, joke shops, chip shops, a massive amount of amusement arcades, charity shops and so on and so on. I was quite excited (in a cheesy way)! I have never been a big fan of chips but it was all I could smell so we decided to choose the tacky-ist looking seaside chip chop where I could buy a cone of chips for a quid, and here it was. And to be honest they were nothing to write home about but then again I wasn't expecting much! The young chap who served us seemed to be thoroughly bored out of his head and when he splattered vinegar all over his hand he (and I) was quite amused, like this was the funniest thing that had happened all week. Poor thing. Anyway back to the chips, I'm not convinced they had be fried for long enough even though they scalded my mouth. But the big ones weren't really edible. But the experience of munching chips from a cone whilst wandering around a seaside town was fab! :) read more

Trip to Southport today fancied some chips on the promenade so stopped by this place. Rude staff making you feel like they are doing you a massive favour to serve you. Average chips, grey mushy peas. Take a walk further up the road from the seafront for better options. read more

Went here last night with the kids for as we were out with the the family, went in the chippy side of the buisiness where the staff were rude and could not be bothered. Please avoid!!! Very expensive for what you get! COMPLETE RIP OFF !! read more

Well I thought a Nice day out and fish and chips, How wrong could I be. I went to SILCOCKS, ordered my favorite fish Haddock and got something totally different.. When I asked they told me they had given me HAKE by mistake, only £6kg cheaper than Haddock.. Was not impressed and would not go back again.. Shame I bet there are some honest fish and chip shops out there who would love that postion that SILCOCKS have got. The price as well, con of two fronts.. Lets see what trading standards make of it...... read more
