Centrally located in South Augusta, this facility is amazing. From the moment you arrive, the team is welcoming and smiling and making you feel like this is a family reunion and suddenly you are now a member. From the exterior it may appear to be nothing of worth, but trust me it is a treasure chest filled with benevolence. There is a weekly grocery pickup service, meals provided, food bank, clothing bank, community services mediation, and more. The facility is two stories and a basketball court-sized gym area. The team is collaborative in focus, which is what brought about my involvement with them, and always seeking to come alongside their neighbors. "We provide quality food and groceries to hungry individuals across our 30 county service area. Since 1982, we've distributed more than 250 million pounds of food and fed more than 14 million people." So why am I talking about them? Because I recently had the privilege of volunteering at their food bank. "Bank" should honestly be replaced with "warehouse" because that is exactly what it is. They have boxes for food and drinks coming in (by the pallet) and boxes ready to sort then boxes that have been packed up and ready to ship across the region. And this place is systemic. You have a job and they show you how to do that job as well as be available for questions. I have served at and taken groups to a number of food warehouses and soup kitchens throughout my life. This, by far, is one of the best organized ones I have encountered. The instructions will tell you, but let me say it again. Wear comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes. Prepare to sweat and know that you may have to lift up to 20 pounds. Feeding people isn't always easy, but it is always worth it. Find a way to support. *Insider's Tip -Volunteer either at the Food Bank or the Master's Table (a once-a-day meal providing location downtown). A very good organization that services Aiken and the entire Central Savannah River Area (CSRA)…read more They operate completely off of donations from area businesses and citizens and supply many of our local food banks and other charities, such as ACTS and the St Vincent Du Paul Society - all to help get food to people who might otherwise go without. They receive food donations from local and regional manufacturers and purchase food and other items directly from area distributors, then make sure that our local charities all get a share of what they can give out. At ACTS, where I volunteer quite a bit, much of the food they get from Golden Harvest goes out to hundreds of families in desperate need of it. And Golden Harvest supplies a lot of the donations that are handed out on the 3rd Saturday of each month at ACTS for what they call 'Senior Saturday', which delivers much needed food to our local senior citizens each month. Last week alone, they provided supplies for over 360 senior citizens in need! Please consider donating to this very worthy charity, as it is the source of food supplies for many of our other local charities who all work together to try to feed the hungry here in Aiken and the greater CSRA.
