Returned to Silver Diner Cathedral Heights, Washington, DC for dinner on Jan. 4, 2024. Diana was our server; she was efficient, courteous and helpful with the menu specials. She also had a great sense of humor which is much appreciated in this town. We shared a fruit and spinach salad for two which was fresh and delicious. I had a great Impossible Burger with gruyere cheese (not a vegan), rocket greens and special sauce; a nice combination. it came with crispy fries. My husband had the Glazed Salmon which he enjoyed very much. He said the glaze was sweet but not overpowering. A great post-holiday recovery dinner even though we ended it with the special Pecan Pie for two. Oh well. Start counting those calories tomorrow. read more

Absolutely loved my experience at Silver I went there for happy hour. The food was delicious, Nelvin who is a manager was very kind he came over to our table to make sure everything was great love his energy. I visited Silver today with my husband and mother-in-law, and unfortunately, it was a terrible experience from start to finish. First, we were told there would be a 20-minute wait, but it turned into 35 minutes with no notification that our table was ready. I had to approach the host stand to ask how much longer, and only then were we seated. Once at our table, things went from bad to worse. We witnessed the table next to us being asked to leave by their waiter because they had already paid their check and the restaurant was busy. It was incredibly uncomfortable to watch. After placing our order, we noticed the table seated 10 minutes after us received their food well before we did. Our waiter offered no explanation for the delay. Eventually, he came by to apologize, saying we were waiting on fries. When the food finally arrived, it was incomplete--no fries--and the omelets were cold. A few minutes later, the fries showed up, but the experience was already ruined. To top it off, as we were leaving, our waiter started clearing the table and spilled leftover fries all over the floor--and onto my husband. At that point, we just left, completely disappointed. We won't be coming back. Between the disorganized service, the long wait, and the poor handling of our food, this visit was beyond disappointing. read more

Great happy hour options. The ginger beer spiked, wine, sliders, goat cheese bruschetta. The cauliflower steak was good but the curry kale salad that came with it was fantastic. The truffle bison meatloaf was melting in my mouth. It was excellent. Staff was friendly, outdoor seating was perfect on a beautiful night with great weather. But the mom with 2 young kids across from me ruined the evening for me. Her younger kid was very disruptive, escalating behavior, refusing to eat. Her force feeding him resulted in me witness her kid throwing up on to the plate, all over the floor. And never apologizing. I had to try my best to close my eyes... it was a horrible sighting from my dinner table. We had more food coming. Restaurant staff acted like nothing ever happened, trying to seat new customers near the vomit. What? Not the restaurant fault kid throwing up but made me wonder if this is normal sighting at this restaurant. Beautiful restaurant and great food though! read more

We just moved to the neighborhood and casually landed at Silver while strolling. The pickle fried chicken sandwich could very well be the best fried chicken sandwich I have ever had (and I've had a few). The service, however, is incredibly slow and employees seem to be enjoying a relaxing afternoon. Came back the next day (mid-afternoon on a Sunday) and the same happened. This is an amazing spot for brunch. We made a reservation the morning of so we were happy to find a spot that afternoon, and were seated immediately we arrived. The menu has many classics brunch options as well as some options with their own twist. We ordered the "boozy" Peanut Butter Heath Bar Milkshake and our waiter nicely split it up into 2 glasses since we had asked to share it. It was really, really good and I highly recommend it for peanut butter lovers! We also placed an order of their buttermilk pancakes, and their shrimp/grits which came in this amazing tomato sauce. There were multiple options for seating both indoors and outdoors, and there were also heat lamps outside for customers to warm up as they eat. The staff was very nice and helpful throughout our visit. Price options are also comparable to brunch options in the area and with reasonable portions. read more

Amazing family restaurant experience! Went early on a Sunday am and had the place mostly to ourselves. Not only was the service perfect - but the food was delicious! If you have a toddler you know it's always a gamble going to a restaurant. But Silver did it right - got his breakfast out super quickly - and get this - in a divided plate!!!!! My son definitely loves his pancakes and eggs and fruit - but not if they are all touching each other. For $6 he had a wonderful breakfast, supplemented by a tasty side of bacon. I totally enjoyed the bison huevos rancheros and my hubby had the Benedict. We shared beignets at the end - totally unnecessary but yummy. We definitely will be back - maybe even become regulars! read more

From April visit ( when you thought you posted a review months ago only to see it was in preview ) As I was walking from the eye doctor I saw this restaurant a few feet away. Of course I looked at the menu - it looked amazing... Brussel sprouts and spiked cider in April on a gloomy Friday sold! Some of the heaters were on so that was even more of a plus. It took a few minutes to be seated and order outside but all in all it was fine. It's nice to enjoy a meal outside in an area not over flowing with foot traffic. Because it's chilly I requested for the heater nearest me to be turned on and that was done pronto. I enjoyed siping my warm spiked cider and enjoy my meal. I was able to watch a webinar during my meal making it an overall peaceful day. Location is great. Prices were reasonable and it was clean and decorated well both inside and outside. I liked my meal. Not a big pesto person but overall the meal was great! I would definitely go back. read more

COFFEE IS ATROCIOUS We love this place. Their vegan options is just awesome 8/10 and the oat pancakes 8/10. We love their potato fingerlings is "delicious " HOWEVER, the coffee and latte here is atrocious. I truly mean atrocious. I have been here I would say in last 2 years about 12-14 breakfast BUT the coffee kills it for me. You pay so much for what basically is hot water that looks black and the latte is sadly not ven worse. PS: got a standard reply from the manager of the premises. We decided to order for pick up the Family Feast for two. We selected the chimichurri chicken wings, the Cobb salad, the lamb pappardelle and the apple beignets. I completely missed the mark with the time we'd be ready to pick it up, and even after my order was placed made a request to pick it up earlier. They were so kind to comply and had it ready 30 minutes earlier than I had originally requested. Now, for the food. Overall, the amounts they gave of each were perfect. The chicken wings were delicious- great flavor and moist. The homemade ranch for dipping is to die for. The Cobb salad was probably the best Cobb salad I've ever had- the bacon wasn't overwhelming, the croutons were made in house, and there was plenty of chicken, egg, etc. and as stated earlier, we just loved the ranch dressing! The lamb pappardelle was good- I would have liked a little more sauce on the pasta, but the sauce had great flavor, as did the meatballs (not too gamey). Finally, the beignets- not overly sweet, tasted of apple, and with the caramel dipping sauce? Amazing. I was extremely fond of the caramel dipping sauce (the honey was okay). I just don't understand why the staff at Silver can't seem to figure out how to run a restaurant! There is never a dedicated bartender, and you are lucky to get more than one drink, ever. (that is a huge loss to revenue!) There are a lot of staff milling around (including 2 managers just walking around) but not doing much. What happened to them walking around with water pitchers or helping to clear tables? We had reservations at noon, and there were a bunch of people who were walk-ins and put on a wait-list, which meant there was no room to stand. Three hostesses stood staring at the iPad and seating folks from the wait-list over those of us who had reservations. I live locally and it's disappointing that they can't seem to train the staff better. read more

Much like its sister in Bethesda, the Cathedral Heights location offers a nice selection of cocktails and spiked milkshakes, among others. As Silver celebrated its 15th year anniversary at this location, they had a number of festivities such as cocktail class and tastings, late HHs, special menus, and meet the chef. I would recommend Silver and Silver Diners for out-of-town visitors, brunches, and week day dinners. read more

We went here the other night with my parents after seeing a concert at the National Cathedral, and overall it was a great experience! The ambiance is fun and diner-like but upscale, and the food was pretty darn good. A few misses, in my opinion, but the lamb meatballs, shrimp taco bowl and pistachio mousse were standouts. They have signs all over the tables... in mini print it says bar and patio only. We did not sit in either area. They would not honor Happy Hour in regular seating area. I don't understand why an establishment would advertise on regular tables and then give you parameters... so you want our money or not? The management did not budge. This was exactly what I was looking for after A long day at the zoo. I am a big fan of Silver Diner as I have many food sensitivities, and my suspicion that this was the same owners was correct. Really great food- everyone in my party was happy with what they ordered. I also liked that it felt like a restaurant even though it Had some diner like touches. This place is nice! I came here with my friend for brunch. There was plenty of seating and there is street parking available. For a Sunday morning, this place wasn't too busy, which was surprising. I guess brunch in DC doesn't really start until 1 or so, so if you get there at 11 you'll be fine. I got a peach Bellini to start and it tasted really good! It was strong but didn't taste alcoholic. For food I got the spinach, feta, and mushroom omelette. It was good overall. The egg to stuff ratio was ok. It could've used more tomatoes, mushrooms, and a hint more feta. The potatoes were my favorite part by far. Not too oily. The toast was really good too! I got one drink and an entree for $30. The price didn't break the bank but it also wasn't soo cheap. They are serving during the pandemic which is great. It's 100% out of doors which is...expected, but what's unexpected is the lack of dedication to making the dining experience palatable, much less enjoyable. My husband and I went to Silver to support whatever business was open after Martin's in Georgetown was closed. New Year's Day was blustery, rainy and miserable but a) we were hungry and b) we wanted to support wait staff since we were out. We sat down at a table next to an outdoor fireplace pretty quickly. The host was amazing, greeting us immediately, wiping down our table and moving the brassiere closer, but when we sat down, the bloom was off the rose. The undersides of the tables hadn't been swept in however long, they were covered in leaves, trash, and discarded masks. The heaters didn't really share the heat further than 8" or so past them which was unfortunate on such a cold day-- after we'd been sitting and freezing and contemplating leaving for 3-5minutes our server finally came and offered drinks. Then he disappeared and didn't come back for another 5 minutes to take our order. He forgot something on my husband's order-someone else ran our food, even though there were a total of 8 people braving the weather to be there, and we had to keep reminding him to bring the tea and refill my coffee. I had the buckwheat waffle with pickle brined chicken. I thought it would be like the juicy well seasoned chicken on the menu at Silver diner. WRONG. It was juicy but thin cut and scarcely seasoned chicken TENDERS served with buckwheat waffles barely bigger than silver dollars. The syrup was good. The fruit was fresh and good but the serving size was minute. My husband ordered the buttermilk pancakes with the beyond sausage, home fries and scrambled eggs. They still hadn't brought his hot tea when the food came out and the waiter CLEARLY forgot to order his home fries. He's the type of person who likes to eat his food together so we waited 7 minutes for the potatoes, another 2-3 minutes for the ketchup and salt and pepper, another 7 minutes for the honey for his tea and by then everything was cold. I wolfed down my food and it was good but I'll admit I was hungry two hours later. Overall it was okay. The experience was definitely colored by the patio, the cold, and the inattentive service. Def not on the shortlist to go back. read more

Bison meatloaf with potatoes and broccolini: scrumptious and perfectly prepared. (I don't typically get meatloaf when I go out, but we were so happy that I did). Salmon and Asparagus: sooo delicious. They have boozy milkshakes and spiked coffees! We had a blast with these. The (complete) service was sweet, pleasant, and wonderful. The management here has gone severely downhill and the food has been very inconsistent lately. We are regulars here as we live just down the road and probably eat here 1-2 times per week whether dining in or getting take-out. All of our issues recently have come when the short-haired manager (not sure her name) is working. She has very poor customer service and is unpleasant to speak with. My wife doesn't eat meat, and the past 2 times we have gotten breakfast here, her meal (which doesn't have meat in it to begin with on the menu) has had bits of ham or bacon in it. Makes me question the attention to detail and the cleanliness in the kitchen. Back in March we came to get a table outside for breakfast. It was 45 degrees and sunny. The manager (short-haired lady) said they weren't going to seat outdoors because it is too cold and it's dangerous for the staff and the heaters don't work well enough. What!?! We have never been told this since we have been living here for 3 years. 45 degrees and sunny and it's dangerous oustide? The outdoor area has plexiglass siding and heaters and we have eaten here outside all throughout the pandemic in the dead of winter when it was sub 30 degrees and never had an issue. Most recently (last week), we came for the Monday special (burger and a beer/shake for $15 or so we thought). When picking up our last take out order we grabbed a flyer from the stack they were handing out at the counter inside where we noticed the deal. It turns out their deal now is actually half price on a burger with the purchase of a beer/shake. When they brought the bill, they again had the same flyer for the $15 special in with the bill. The manager would not honor the deal on the flyers they were actively passing out and was very argumentative. On top of it, the bill was incorrect to begin with and the manager didn't know how the bill was supposed to look. It was absurd and the manager was very argumentative and had zero customer service skills. For the above reasons, we will no longer be going back. The food overall is good and we have enjoyed the salmon salad pretty often, however we will seek out other options nearby going forward. read more

I do have to say that they aren't the most knowledgeable with all the liquors they had because the server hesitated when we asked for a specific Irish Whiskey. Food: Oreo Milkshake - Standard. I always get the oreo shake to check for the quality of the shake. I liked the thickness of the shake but I wish they blended it more. There were too many chunks getting stuck in my straw. Coffee Bean Milkshake - Good Coffee. If you love coffee, you will love this shake. There are beans blended with this mixture which adds a really nice touch to the texture. Irish Coffee with Tullamore Dew - So strong. This nigh cap will put you to sleep with the amount of whiskey in the cup. The bartender had a very heavy hand. I really have tried to like this place over the years. I think I've finally learned not to try new things, to just stick with the French toast. The location is really convenient and they have plenty of parking, a lovely heated patio for outdoor dining year round and a really nice indoor dining room with a bar. The servers are always so nice. Horrible and discriminatory service!!! A couple who just sat down got their drinks within 3 minutes. My party waited 45 minutes for water... so horrible, we had to ask for a manager... over water. I never ever like to pull the race card in reviews... but it was so obvious, it hurt. Drinks from the EMPTY bar took 45 minutes. Food took nearly an hou Half of the orders were messed up. And we got a "sorry" from two managers. It was horrible. I've never felt so horrible at a restaurant and it saddens me to leave this review. The managers looked at us as if we were strange for asking to be compensated for our horrible treatment. Someone who has a severe nut allergy asked for them to no put pecans on the food.... only to have pecans on her food and have to rush to the bathroom after feeling ill. Our waitress had a clear unpleasant attitude from the beginning. She may have been overwhelmed, which is a managerial issue for not assigning her some additional help. Regardless of the large party, she never cracked a smile, rolled her eyes serval times at simple request like "can we have a side of ketchup?" She seemed really bothered by us for not a reason I could notice. The people who brought out the food were more apologetic than the actual managers. Things got so bad the general manager had to be contacted. I'm not going to even comment on the food. It doesn't matter at this point, does it? I'm not sure what happened tonight at this place, but I will never be back. Never. read more
