What's there in a name?! Apparently quite a lot, especially if you're in the restaurant business! A…read morecatchy "nom de guerre" for a place serving nom noms is marketing done right. In this context, when the almost-hangry duo comprising of the missus and me were driving south on the scenic BC-6 along the beautiful Slocan River, we stumbled onto the name "Sleep Is For Sissies" when searching online for food options along the route. Though the name felt like an apt one were it a cafe serving dark, strong coffee, we curiously checked out their website and menu. And, so grateful that we did! This quirkily-named restaurant is a gem serving yummy and neatly plated delicacies, and whose owner decided to hang on to the quirky title when they purchased the business. It's right at the start of a sharp curve along the road, so you need to properly time and execute your exit into their parking lot (read, it's their way or the highway!). The bright, airy and spacious seating area offers a perfect pitstop for the sore and travel-weary bums and eyes, and the items on their vast menu are just the flavorful nourishments which the doctor ordered for our famished tummies and souls! What caught our attention en route to the place was the Seafood Chow Down Chowder, and it didn't disappoint - so so good! Highly recommend the Harmony Hills Basil Pesto Prawns, Wild Spring Salmon and their Pasta which we took To Go. Kudos to Leia and Ethan for their fantastic recommendations, local travel tips, stellar service and hospitality in what felt like a fun fine-dining experience in, ironically, a rather casually named eatry!

Review Visit: July 14th, 2015…read more Who knew there were so many places to get coffee in such a little town. Our journey across Canada brought us to Nakusp, where there seems to be 1 coffee shop per 500 people in town. No, seriously. This is one of three places I got coffee while I was in Nakusp. Not that I am complaining or anything. As with a lot of places in Nakusp, we stumbled upon this place during our afternoon stroll through town. Since I am magnetically drawn to coffee places, my accomplices had now choice but to follow me in. At first, I wasn't 100% sure this was a coffee place. I didn't get a good look in the window before heading in. I was kind of expecting it to be a bar or something to do with adult beverages. It was a welcome surprise that it was a coffee place. We entered and looked around. I noticed the menu offered more than coffee to order. We all noticed they had your typical coffee shop stuff for sale. Bags of coffee, baked goods, various coffee accessories, etc. They also had a small table or two set up inside for consuming your beverage/food. If it's a beautiful day outside, they have some outdoor seating. While we looked over the menu, I decided on my usual ice caramal latte. My cohorts got plain coffees and Andy also picked up some nanaimo bars here for the kids. Seeing as we just got coffees and baked goods, we resumed our walk around town. This is when I took my first sip and what a delicious latte it was. It wasn't something to write home about but after having it made in many different ways, it was nice to have it done in a way that I prefer. The drink was smooth and full of flavor without anything overpowering the other ingredients. It's a shame we never made it here for lunch. The menu had some stuff on it that sounded really appetizing and also the baked goods looked delicious behind the glass. I also wanted to pick up some of the Kick Ass flavor of coffee they had on sale.

Was definitely full and satisfied after that meal. It is a walk up deli type for ordering. But was greeted with great service and a smile. I definitely recommend this place if your ever in town. It is located right on the Main Street not far from the oldest operating bar in BC. "The Leland hotel. Est 1892 Cheers Dino.

Marzano clearly puts intention behind what they do, drawing inspiration from traditional Neapolitan techniques and a focus on high-quality, simple ingredients, and that care shows up on the menu. From an accessibility standpoint, this was one of the easier Italian meals I've had while eating GF. Gluten-free options were clearly labeled, including modification notes, which made ordering straightforward. Nearly all pizzas and pastas could be made gluten free, aside from specialty pastas like the gnocchi and lasagna. They also had a gluten-free focaccia available as an appetizer, which had an excellent texture. The appetizers were a standout. We shared the gnocchi and burrata and both were delicious. Pizza got great feedback from the table overall, though a couple slices were slightly undercooked in the center and flopped when picked up. I ordered the sirloin, which was okay, though not my favorite part of the meal. Service was excellent. Our server was attentive and thoughtful, offering a soup sample to our 90-year-old guest who was unsure about the daily option, and kindly helped wrangle us for a group photo during a busy dinner hour, which I really appreciated. The interior is gorgeous--modern, warm, and very well maintained. Even though Marzano opened in 2018, it feels much newer. I debated between a 4 and 5 star review due to my entrée and the pizza texture, but the intention is clearly there, and the overall experience was strong. I'd absolutely come back and would love to try more of the menu next time.
