Simdy's is an expert at alterations. I have been a loyal customer of this business for many years as they have always provided top notch service and care with all my garments. Very friendly customer care! My uniform shirts sleeves are always way too long and so I have to have them altered. Simdy masterfully measured the correct length based on my body dimensions for my arms. Every time I replace my shirts , they have always come back perfectly tailored. Same experience for my jean and trouser alterations. I have always been given proper advice on fit and how certain styles should fit. I feel that this place is a bit overpriced. I brought in a wedding dress that was slightly too tight in the upper body area and Simdy wanted me to put on my own silk dress for a fitting fee of $35. That just seemed suspiciously scammy to me regardless of skill. So, I took my business and dress to another shop also on Davie street (one of the tailor and dryclean places) a few blocks away and was able to put on my own dress on for free to show where it needed to be let out. Total cost of "fitting", consult, alteration, AND professional cleaning? $18! Turnaround time was also less than a week versus Simdy trying to tell me 4 months would not be enough time because she was busy. Yup, another tailor on Davie did the job for me for HALF of Simdy's fitting fee in just a few days...I don't even want to hear what it might have cost to have Simdy actually do an alteration for me! Anyhow, I understand she could do good work, but I would definitely suggest visiting other shops first. Being overcharged like this reminds me of taking the car to the shop and being quoted inflated prices--it sure leaves you with a bad taste. read more

About 4 months ago I bought a jacket that I really liked. It wasn't the most expensive jacket in the world, perhaps about $150 but I liked it. I liked it so much I said I would only use it for more dressy events. The problem is by the time I could use this jacket I lost about 20 lbs and it no longer fit. So do I buy a new jacket or get it altered? I ended up bringing it to Simdy's, for just under half the price of a new jacked they altered my coat to fit me and it looks amazing. Not only does it fit but it fits well, fits better than any off the rack jacket I could buy in a store. I ordered my prom dress online, so of course it didn't fit exactly right. The waist of the dress was a bit too big and the slits that ran up both my legs were too high. We took my dress into Simdy's and she altered it perfectly (taking in the waist and stitching up the slits a few inches). We were concerned that with the mesh material of the dress that it would be difficult to take in, but Simdy made the dress look beautiful with no harsh lines. I'll preface this by saying that I haven't received my dress yet, so can't attest to the quality of her work - but I felt compelled to write a review because I was so impressed with Simdy. I took my $400 wedding dress in for alterations - it needed shortened, bustled, and taken in at the top. The top was only a little bit too big (or so I thought). Turns out the waist needed taken in an inch or two, which would fix the top. I was told that taking the top in would be $180 (yikes) since its beaded and time consuming to fix. It was $35 per bustle, and shortening was $120. (I had three layers) Simdy suggested an alternative to taking in the top (adding a thick elastic band to cinch the top in) to help save money (it was half the cost of actually taking in the top), and also suggested hemming my bottom layer all the way around so that I wouldn't have to bustle two layers of fabric. I ended up doing one bustle and hemmed my dress - cost came to $165. She told me to wait until my next appointment to decide on whether I want to add the band or not. I've never been to a place that is as honest as Simdys. I also feel fairly confident leaving my dress there, as she had a row of 20+ wedding gowns hanging up along the wall. Simdy has years of experience both of owning their own clothing manufacturing shop in Hong Kong but also she does all the alterations for highend designers like Vera Wang and Berta gowns. I bought a gown from a designer boutique overseas that was too big and did not have a chance to get it altered. The boutique owner recommended some alterations and when I brought to Simdy not only did she recommend the same alterations, she recommended including the bra into the dress for the best silhouette. The result, a gorgeous fit and I felt like a princess. It is more pricey from other places but Simdy really knows her stuff and is worth every penny. I would highly recommend her! read more

I had a small job that needed a creative tailor. I wanted a leash clasp attached to a dog harness without interfering with a mid-vest zipper. Not only did that get done but frayed ends on the straps were cleaned up and finished so that they won't fray again. They did a great job, with care, and I couldn't be happier. read more

I don't mind paying $20/$30 for a hem on my pants, but I expect a good job. The thread chosen was not the right colour and it was too thin, not matching the rest of the original stitches. I bought a wedding dress on Craigslist, but it was a touch to small, and I believed the panel retired replacement so I made an appointment and went with my girlfriend to the store to get a quote. I had the dress but showed photos first. Simdy looked at the photos and told me that she was a wedding dress specialist and I didn't need to have any change done. She told me for $35 she would 'dress me' and show my friend how to leave me in properly, if it didn't look how I wanted, the $35 would come off any alteration. The cost of a new panel and dressing would have totalled $168. But she was right. She spent a good half hour with me and showed my girlfriend exactly how to do the dress up so that she could do it on the day. I asked her the cost to steam the dress, $65-but, she said as its a destination wedding it will get creased again in travel, so I don't want to take your money as its pointless. In addition to saving me a bundle where she could easily have ripped me off, she was hysterically funny, my friend and I were were in stitches! We will both be retuning for any dry cleaning or alteration needs-this woman clearly know her stuff (there were very Wang wedding dresses on her rack being altered) and she's a lovely lady! read more

This guy is brutal. Took some pants to get the slit closed up. The guy did such a 5 minute amateur job and tried to charge me $48. Then he went on to say he charges $28 an hour which the job he did wouldn't of taken 15 minutes by hand. Total rip off. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

For various reasons, my non-traditional custom wedding dress arrived in the mail about a month late. Consequently, I only realized a week before the wedding that I needed to have the rib cage expanded ever-so-slightly in order to allow me to breathe properly/not pass out. Simdy came to the rescue! She wasn't pushy at all, and she took the time to ensure that the alteration was in fact necessary. I have no in-depth experience with them, so shouldn't give a "eek" rating or anything. But When I phoned, he quoted me 48$ to just lengthen the sleeve of a men's suit jacket. I'm sure there was no misunderstanding as triple checked using different vocabulary. I think I've had this done at Tip Top (not great communicators or level of care, admittedly) for 12-15$, so there's some pretty big price range. Just thought I'd put that out there in case you don't ask and dump a bunch of stuff off with them without investigating price... Maybe it's way cheaper if you get a bunch done at once? read more

Brought in a white cotton shirt because it was too big on me and I wanted it more fitted. Paid $70 + tax and it was a HOT mess. Even though they measured me, they ended up cutting too much on the shoulders and left them too narrow. Guy kept saying that my "shoulders are too broad" and suddenly pretending not to speak English (Perfect timing). So not only was I left with a narrow shirt, but also insulted and laughed at. Besides their poor execution they were never even humble enough to say they made a mistake or had any willingness to try to fix the problem. If they are not able to do this simple task....even though they advertise their shirt making abilities, then I have no clue what all those girls are sending their wedding pictures for. For all we know they are as fake as their excuses. My recommendation is save your shirts and dresses and try somewhere else. read more

Wonderful job relining my full length vintage wool coat. Saved some money by providing my own fabric. They also did such a great job sewing a hole on my partner's favourite tweed pants - it's practically invisible. They're very busy so it takes 1-2 weeks but it's worth the wait. read more

Disappointed - I went in for a bridal dress alteration consultation, hoping to hear her approach to fixing my dress and also the total cost of alterations. I thanked her, and told her that I would like some time to think about it afterwards before I confirm, as she told me that the total cost would be a whopping $900 (3 times what other bridal shops/alterations stores were charging)! Meanwhile, she was trying to justify the price, telling me she was the in-house seamstress at Vera Wang. After I had told her again that I needed time to think, she demanded that I would have to pay around $30-something dollars for the "consultation fee," which she did not remind me beforehand, nor does it say anywhere on the store website. Feeling very pressured and somewhat ripped off, I paid and left the store - and I will NEVER come back again. I'm sure Simdy's really talented at what she does; however, she's using some manipulative sales tactics. read more

I took my wedding dress here because of all the good reviews - turns out it was a huge mistake. My dress fit me almost perfectly when I bought it, was just slightly too large. It's a very simple dress, with no beading and didn't require anything other than for the bodice to be taken in. This was all I asked them to do, and they charged me $300, which was outrageous, but I didn't know where else to go, I was in a hurry, and I figured I would be paying for quality. This is not what I received. When I went back for a fitting after the alterations had been completed (they took a month, despite the simplicity), I tried to put on the dress and it tore in the back, below the lacing. Simdy told me it was my fault, that I hadn't put the dress on correctly and that she would fix it. She tied it up and it was so tight! I figured when the actual day came, I could loosen it a bit. She said that if I lost some weight, it would fit me perfectly! I am smaller than a size 2!!! She had also put a bustle on that I didn't ask for and didn't want to pay for. When I mentioned it, she quickly said it was a gift. She tied it up, and I thought it looked horrible (it was way too far down on the dress and looked like it would tear at the slightest tug) but I figured I could always get it taken off, since I had decided to go to a different seamstress to get the bustle done anyway. She fixed the tear in the bodice and I was on my way. Four days later, I tried the dress on for fun, and it tore again in the same spot! Not only that, I couldn't get the back to close up without my skin showing (I guess this is why she told me to lose some weight!). It was a size two and she made it too small for me to pull it up over my hips without it tearing and it wouldn't do up in the back and also allow me to breathe. My fiance and I went back to the store to see what they could do in terms of a refund, since we had to take the dress out of Vancouver in four days and didn't think this was sufficient time to fix the problems since it had taken a month initially for a simple alteration. This is the bit that really upset me - instead of listening to our situation and trying to come up with a solution, the business owner screamed at us. At the mere suggestion of a refund, he got entirely too defensive, kept cutting us off and wouldn't listen to a word we said. He yelled in our faces so much that we ended up just walking out. I was shaking. It was so unprofessional and I probably wouldn't be posting this review if that hadn't happened. Maybe the dress being done improperly was just a random, uncommon mess-up, but no business owner should be screaming in their customer's faces until they have to walk out. Needless to say, I will never be giving these people my business again. Thankfully, I found a seamstress in a different city who undid all the mistakes and properly fitted my dress and gave me a strong, beautiful looking bustle for a third of the price I paid at Simdy's and everything was alright for my wedding day. I have just never had such a poor experience with a business. I refuse to recommend them, not because of their alteration quality, but because of their conduct when we encountered a problem with their work. I have never been screamed at by a business owner, especially when I paid them $300, and I think Simdy's should learn that that's not how you treat your customers if you expect them to come back ever. read more

I took a suit here last year to get altered. I had to alter everything from the pants, shirt and jacket. It ended up costing as much as the suit, but well worth it. When I pick up my alterations I usually just leave without checking it because I guess I just trust it's ok. But Simdy asked if I wanted to try it on and I'm so glad I did. When I walked out and look at the changes, I was SO excited to wear my new suit again!! She did an amazing job and I have gone back to her numerous times for alterations.
