This is Detroit Areas best kept secret! Who knew that this type of white water adventure was in Macomb County, let alone anywhere in the Midwest. Heck, I thought that Macomb County was where everyone goes to get out on Lake St. Clair, The Greatest Lake! For the Best River Paddling in the Midwest, start off by grabbing some friends and begin your adventure at Yates; the first two or so miles move quite fast, so you are basically just steering around tight meanders and viewing the scenic high banks full of white cedars, Paw Paw Trees, deer and blue herons. Once you're beyond the foot bridge in River Bends, the nature still abounds, however, the river is still pretty technical but is tamed a bit in comparison. This stretch is not for kids or others if there is high water. This is the best Urban (but feels like "Up-North Michigan") paddling I have ever done. This place needs to be on the "How do we get Amazon HQ2 here, because this is the Clinton River that is not to be missed. Make a Pit Stop in Downtown Utica; where you can stop off, tie up your kayak and grab a burger and beer at one of the many outdoor cafes. Finally, you can finish up the voyage at Heritage Park, which has a boat lauch that is handicapped accessible. The Sterling Heights sections of the Clinton River are a close second and more family friendly from Heritage Park all the way to Rotary Park. And Budd Park in Clinton Township all the way down to Downtown Mt. Clemens is another close 2nd or 3rd as it is wider and deeper but very tranquil compared to what's upstream. For Great Lakes Coastal Paddling, don't miss out on Lake St. Clair Metropark as Black Creek Marsh is a wildfowl and angler's dream. The area up by Historic Downtown New Baltimore is at the top of Anchor Bay and there you have crystal clear Great Lakes waters, clean beaches, and an Historic Downtown with plenty of places to eat and have libations. Well we got there early and once it became our start time, noone was there. I ended up calling them to make sure someone was coming, and I was able to get a hold of a staff member who said they would be there in a couple of minutes. Well that turned into about 15 minutes later. Once the staff member came, they got the kayak on the water, showed us how to get in and gave us life jackets. The actually kayaking was nice and the weather was good that day. Basically two ways you can kayak through a nature area or by some huge lake houses. Both are obviously beautiful choices. So overall, it was a decent adventure but just did not like the fact they were late in getting things started.

The staff are fantastic and very informative. I'm not an expert kayaker but was able to easily navigate the waters. The Detroit River is a bit challenging to navigate due to the current, but the guides are there to help if needed. I learned a lot along the way as we stopped periodically to learn some history about Detroit and the homes we encountered on the canals. I had a blast and want to buy my own kayak!

I like to bird watch and saw a cool Wood Ducks in the water, a tree swallow, and a swan! You can also stop by the water (very close to the shore) in the short hike at least 3 times and see some turtles. And there are many chipmunks and some other birds along the path. And there are a lot of people canoeing or kayaking on the water.
