We have always wanted to try this restaurant out and finally did. We have been to a few restaurants in the area, but this time we chose to dine here. We were not disappointed. We both had the clam chowder and the fish and chips. They were both excellent! The service was also good too. Vanessa and Brandon were both attentive and very nice. I went here with a party of 3 on a Saturday afternoon and it was a good experience. The menu is quite large and there was live music to keep us entertained. We had shrimp taquitos and fried clams for our appetizers and I ordered the Brazilian Lobster Special for my entree. The taquito were good, and the clams were good too but they gave us so many that after a while it started to get old. I think this would be a great option for a larger party still. The lobster meal that I got had beans and coleslaw. It was good but nothing groundbreaking. Overall I really liked the vibes here and I want to come back to try more of their menu items. read more

I had reservations for 5:30. My family checked in at 5:15 and they were told there would be a delay. When I arrived at 5:20 I checked in myself. I walked up to the hostess podium and I was ignored. Then I said that I was checking in for 5:30p reservations and the hostess said " that's gonna be much later than. I'll probably get your party in closer to 6:30p." Obviously I was upset by this response since we drove over an hour to this restaurant for the sole purpose of a celebration of life. If reservations were going to be ignored then I would not have bothered making them in a timely matter as I was instructed to do by the organizer of the evening. I basically got the brush off like there was nothing they could do since people were not leaving (including walk-ins) after a 90 min dining limit was posted outside. I was very peeved about this response and said clearly that is not my problem yet I am being penalized. My first encounter with the hostess carried throughout my visit. Our servers name was Linda and she took our drink order as soon as we were seated, however it did seem to take a while for our drinks to arrive. Apologies were made again for the wait but at this point it was clear there was gonna be an issue throughout the meal. I ordered a Caprese salad with brussels sprouts to share family style .When my salad arrived there was no basil. It was just mozzarella and tomatoes, balsamic and olive oil with a dried herb sprinkled on top. When I asked my server if this is how the Caprese is served she said yes. I never had a Caprese with no leaves of basil. Needless to say it's not what I wanted nor expected. My sprouts were dry and overcooked. Linda was truly trying to be accommodating. I could tell she is working very hard to satisfy our group despite the fact the restaurant was packed. Linda was great. We decided to share key lime pie and the warm butter cake w/ ice cream and raspberry sauce. The key lime pie was fine. The warm butter cake was a bit different as it had a hard sugar top. Ice cream with raspberry sauce on the side as well as below. It was too much sauce for my taste. More like a jelly doughnut. My blueberry pomegranate margarita was the best part of my meal. I can only speak about my food. Since they claim they have the best fish & chips that's what I got. Fish, nice big pieces. Perfectly battered and crispy. The fries were seasoned well and maybe a little battered to lock in the flavor. It came out piping hot and fresh! So, yes I agree. The BEST fish and chips! Coleslaw was bland and had raisins. That visually was a turn off for me. Coleslaw didn't have enough dressing and was more like a cabbage salad. I don't remember any condiments on the tables. It would have been nice to have at least salt and pepper. Other items my table ordered: Caprese salad NO basil. You really can't call it Caprese salad then. Brussel sprouts. They were okay but definitely had too much of a "roasted" flavor (aka burnt). I could only eat a couple. Cioppino was okay. Again I wish it had more garlic and flavor. The sauce seemed more like marinara than a wine broth. We were there for a luau memorial. One of the regular musicians wife passed away. She was a regular and loved person at Simply Fish and in the Hawaiian community. We made reservations like we were instructed to do so. When we checked in ON TIME, we were told we would maybe be seated in an hour. The hostesses were kinda flippant and dismissive to the fact we followed the rules and made a proper reservation. They even said in front of us that more people came than expected who did NOT have reservations. It was the attitude of the hostesses that were unprofessional. I understand it was a memorial for a VERY loved individual but why punish the people who followed the rules? We did make a reservation. We did get seated only because another member of the community gave up their table and left early. It was a crazy busy night. Our server Linda was fantastic. She was still able to deliver fast and efficient service. We really appreciate her aloha and service. She was very fond of Auntie Consuelo too and it really showed. She was really helpful in ordering our food. The rest of the table wanted dessert. They ordered key lime pie and butter cake. I think the key lime pie was the better one of the two because that disappeared first. Butter cake looked like they torched it like a creme brûlée. I'm no pastry chef or connoisseur but that butter cake did not look like a butter cake. Calling the processed sauce coulis doesn't make it taste better. It still tasted like it came out of can. I'm so glad my friends introduced me to this place, and we even got seated next to the owner, Derek, who was so pleasant, kind, and humble. He and his staff went above and beyond, and made us feel so special. We came on St. Patrick's Day, which was perfect for their Taco Tuesday specials. We ordered a ton of food, and nothing disappointed. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. When it comes to seafood, it is usually a hit or miss for me, and items such as fish are easily overcooked. Not here. We got the CIOPPINO $22, with fettuccine $7 extra, ROCKIN' SHRIMP TACOS $3.50 each, a battered fish taco $4, a FILET MIGNON TACO $4.50 (special prices on Taco Tuesday), SHRIMP TAQUITOS (5 for $12), the WARM SEAFOOD SALAD w/ lime vinaigrette $23, and the SEABASS with rice/French fries $16. My favorites include the cioppino, Rockin' shrimp tacos (their best-selling taco), the shrimp taquitos, and the warm seafood salad. The tacos were huge and delicious as well. The fish taco was a little salty. Their menu is extensive, and they even have a SECRET MENU for more options. Could it get any better?! They even have LIVE ENTERTAINMENT on Wed, and Fri through Sun, although reservations are required on Fridays I believe, for their Tribute to Frank Sinatra and their classic 70s/80s/90s night. Good seafood and friendly staff. The space is one room with a high ceiling, but it felt cramped with how close the tables are to each other. Long wait time for dinner when we went on a Friday night, and service was a bit slow since it was packed, but staff eventually checked in to make sure we got everything. Orange roughy with fries and grilled zucchini: 3/5. The fish tasted plain, as it was very mildly seasoned. The creamy sauce was quite skimpy, and it didn't really add much flavor to the dish, but the lemon helped a little. Apps/sides such as clam chowder, calamari, and breaded scallops: 5/5. Sorry to say our second trip was marred by the purchase of their supposed huge lobster tail for about 70 dollars. When it came it was the same size as the ones they sell at Costco. I've had this place bookmarked for a while, and decided to come in on a Friday at 2:30. Lucky for me it was happy hour menu! We tried the lobster roll and that was $35 if you get two it's $60. I got the three taco selection and for happy hour. It's only $12. Even beers on draft at happy hour is six dollars each, which are all really reasonable prices. The menu is huge. I had a hard time deciding and thoughts and this was my first time I wanted to give something off their happy hour menu a try. Their service is excellent and they have a live. Frank Sinatra impersonator on Friday evenings and a jazz singer on Saturday evening evenings. The place is fairly large cozy and has a diner type feel . Last night my family and I went to Simply Fish for dinner. I've been passing it on my way home for years and always meant to stop in, and this finally gave us a reason to go. My sister had the clam chowder bowl. Both of my nieces ordered bowls as well--one had a rock shrimp bowl and the other had a salmon bowl. I ordered the filet mignon skewer with a 4-ounce lobster. We also shared the sampler as an appetizer, but I didn't get a photo because it disappeared pretty quickly. Everyone really enjoyed their food. They had live music playing, which was actually really nice. When we arrived around 8:30 PM, the restaurant was very full and we got the last table, but we never felt rushed. We were able to take our time, enjoy the music, and relax. My skewer was tender and well seasoned. The lobster was small since it was a 4-ounce portion, but the meat was still very tender and flavorful. As for service, our server was very kind but a bit forgetful and on the slower side getting things back to us. That could have been because it was busy when we first arrived, but even later in the evening when it had cleared out, that was still the case. He may have been in training, so I'm not holding it completely against him. There was another man and woman who came around and delivered our food, and they were much better. I can't believe I've lived in Costa Mesa for almost a year now and have only tried this place today. The menu is vast and there is a choice for everyone. We ordered the Sunday special which had lobster and steak on rice. My god, what a deal. Service was amazing and we never had to wait too long to have someone come ask us if we needed anything. We were greeted and seated pretty quickly, ordered our food, then realized we didn't get any utensils, so we had to wait a few minutes before we could actually eat. We started with margaritas, got oysters for appetizers, and surf and turf for entrees. Margaritas- They make them strong which is always appreciated. The regular one is limey and refreshing and the mango marg is sweet and fruity. Oysters- Fresh and meaty! Came with different condiments and sauces so it was fun to mix and match with each sample. Surf and Turf- We got the baseball cut steak which was cooked to preference. The meat is nice and juicy and perfectly seared. The lobster is fresh and tasty. We won't be returning. The service was extremely disappointing. We came in around 1:50PM for a late lunch on 4/4/26 and were assigned a blonde server. Unfortunately, she never brought husband's drink, even after main course had already arrived. To make matters worse, hubby's appetizer came out after the main course, which made the whole experience feel very disorganized. She was also quite rude and didn't check in on us at all. When we were leaving, she simply walked past without acknowledging us. I do want to give credit where it's due--the gentleman who kept refilling our water was kind and attentive, and he was honestly the only positive part of our visit. The food itself was good, but the poor service completely overshadowed it. The restaurant is cozy but cool. The crowd featured a significant number of "seniors". The menu is vast and features all the seafood you expect. For $38, mind you the shrimp taquitos are $13 for 5 and fish and chips is $16 thats $29 supposed to have an option of clam chowder or salad. I simply wanted to try this place. It had the "look" and that was the hook having driven by a time or two. A swirl of Whale Gray and Ocean Blue on the floor works it's way onto and around the booths. Look around and you might decide if Jonah ended up inside this Whale's stomach he might not have complained. Pull the fish handle front door open and the Hostee will greet you and seat you. You will be handed a stack of material to peruse. A book as long as the rough draft of Moby Dick along with a hand full of separate laminated offerings of Craft Beer here, Basic Wine, which is fine, Desserts till it hurts, Specials and a Photo Album like a Graduation Annual of Simply's Greatest Hits. The Staff: Patient and helpful as an Urgent Care facility and just as clean. Jesus went over the entire menu fish by fish. Thank you, Jesus. Comfy booths, more than reasonable prices, who could ask for anything more? Me. As soon as digest the menu options and order the food, things start to fly (swim) out of the kitchen. There is no pacing, rhyme or reason to food service. You order it, you're gonna get it, and eat it right now. It's the "fast" part of Fast Casual. Everything arrives at once. So, if you have to catch a plane or a concert you're in great shape. The Food: The fish is wild caught and fresh. Best to go early, I think. The early fish catches the smelt and everything smelt good. No smoke billowing out of the kitchen, no grease splattering all over the walls, no paint peeling off the ceiling from the heat of the Grill. But, it all comes out at the same time. You came here to eat and so Simply delivers. (They also do deliver if you are compelled to dine on the Sofa in your Sweats). My dining adventure began with the House Salad which was served with an insipid Cilantro Avocado Dressing in a cup on the side. It was a small plate of simple greens waiting to be dressed. It's still waiting. The common denominator between Cilantro, Avocado and this Dressing is that all three are green. While nibbling at the Salad, the Calamari Fritti appeared. Hard to beat a good Calamari Frite. My Rings and Tentacles fought back. They were a bit chewy. Good if you're a Dachshund. Calamari needs to be par boiled for 60 seconds then dunked in an ice bath before breading and frying, but what do I know? This Calamari needed a Spa Treatment. The Cup of Salsa masquerading as Marinara was nice and helped perk up the Salad too. The bottom line was that this was just a Squid Game and not Calamari Fritti to make Massimo Bottura smile. The Cajun Blackened Halibut nestled between the Salad and Calamari and had the right idea. A large square of Hali Filet filled the plate. It had a slight bite of pleasant heat. Fork in, a piece pulled away from the corpus. It was sadly a click dry. If the Line Cook has to ask himself "Hmmm...I wonder if the fish is done?" It's already overcooked. A minute less in heat would have blessed this dish. The Brown Rice was, well, just Brown Rice. The Cole Slaw was just plain blah. The Mahi Mahi was exhausted from swimming from Hawaii. It too was flirting with being dry. This came with Black Beans in a supporting role. More juice than Bean it had me wishing I brought my Travel Pack of Tapatio and Cholula. In all fairness most of both fishes came home with me. At room temp the next morning they were serviceable as a platform for two Farm Fresh Eggs just set. I support small business. I support this business. It could have been better and hopefully management takes this review with a grain of Salt or at least sprinkles some on the food and fishes the fish out of the oven or off the grill before the thrill is gone. I've been meaning to try this place based on yelp suggestions. I finally got a craving and packed my 4 yr old in the car to try some seafood. He's a big fan of shrimp and I saw they had a kids menu. The place itself is tucked in a strip mall across from the Vons shopping center. The place is small but had a nice atmosphere. They've got fish on the walls so my son got excited pointing out the kinds of fish he knew. Linda was our server and she was very warm and friendly. Great service and great food If you're craving some seafood at a simple and affordable place then this is definitely it. My sister have been telling me to go for awhile and I finally got the chance on a weekday for a late lunch. I started with their calamari strips and octopus. The calamari strips were good but not the best. The octopus was really good just a tad overcooked. But the it was still amazing and the green sauce it came with was delicious. For my main I got their Orange Roughy which was a delicious white fish with your choice of sauce. I got the one they recommended. You can also choose your sides. I got their roasted corn and yummy coleslaw. It was a large dish but it was so good I devoured it. I also got to try some of their scallops and fries. The scallops are a must if you love scallops. Their fries were seasoned and perfectly fried. We couldn't have been happier. The service was excellent. The waitress was attentive, informative, and helpful. The inside is casual and has a chill vibe. I like that their menu had lots of different options and some items you can't find anywhere else. They also have daily specials and great happy hour prices. Over cooked food, very slow service but an abundance of people that know not what they do. Most all the reviews about this eatery were from people that were paid to give it high ratings. Do yourself a favor and go to McDonalds and get a fish filet sandwich which would be 1000% better meal and would not cost you $250 for 4 adults and 2 kids like this place charges me for terrible nasty food. 3.5/5. Decided to try this restaurant on a Friday and we did not make reservations since it was last minute but we waited about 35 minutes before getting seated. They do have plenty of parking which is nice. The restaurant itself is not too large but definitely cozy seating with high ceilings and they had singers entertaining us which was neat. We waited about 10+ minutes until one of the hosts saw us and decided to jump in to take our order which we appreciated. We started off with the clam chowder and crab cakes. The clam chowder wasn't too bad, wish it was hotter in temperature. The crab cakes came out quick and was slightly on the dry side. For our main entrees we had the swordfish and the shrimp/lobster. Both came with sides and I highly recommend getting the brussel sprouts because they were cooked very well. My swordfish was slightly overcooked and the shrimp was bit chewy. The portions are very generous for the price as this place does have reasonable prices for seafood. No one really checked in on us throughout our dinner and we finally flagged someone down for the check. read more
