This marker is located on a quiet road near an intersection. There are clearly horse farms all around and that's why we're here. Sir Archie, foaled in Virginia in 1805, became the most celebrated thoroughbred connected to North Carolina and the foundation sire of champions like Timoleon, Boston, Lexington and Man O'War. Before Kentucky rose to prominence, Virginia and North Carolina horses dominated racing across the country, and Sir Archie stood at the center of that early reputation. Trained first by William Ransom Johnson and later purchased by William R. Davie, he proved so successful on the track that he was soon retired to stud, where his offspring shaped the next generation of champions. He remains unmatched in American turf history. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "Foundation sire of American Thoroughbred race horses, including Timoleon, Boston, Lexington, & Man O'War. Died at Mowfield, one mile north, in 1833." It is marker number E-83 and it was erected in 1974 by North Carolina Division of Archives and History.
