Love coming here with my (future) in-laws for dinner! Last night was my second time coming here for…read moredinner, and it was just as delicious as I remembered from last December. Once again we visited on a night when they serve the à la carte menu, so that's the review below.
We made a reservation for 8 and were seated in a comfortable booth, and our coats were taken for us so that they wouldn't clutter the space. For the five of us we ordered 3 starters, 3 mains, 2 veggie side dishes, 4 pilau rice, 1 bread basket, and 1 order of peshwari naan. We also ordered a bottle of pinot noir. Before the food arrived, a server brought over some small lentil patties for an amuse bouche, which are good but too dry for me. The salmon and the lamb starters were quite good, and the soft shell crab was 50-50: the soft shell crab itself was very enjoyable, but the crab cake tasted more like a potato patty and did not work well.
For the main courses we went with a seafood, a lamb, and a chicken: the crab curry, the Welsh lamb rogan josh, and chettindad chicken. I wasn't a fan of the flavor of the crab, but others loved it, so do order this if you like crab. The chicken was my favorite--what tender meat and perfectly seasoned curry sauce/gravy! The lamb was also very good, just as it was last year. The lentils we ordered for a side were a nice balance for the spiciness of the chicken and the lamb. The cauliflower had very nice flavor but was a bit too firm in the middle still for my liking for such a dish. Their rice is always superb, and I'm now a huge, HUGE fan of their peshwari naan! Wow was it good! I ordered it on a whim at the last minute because the sweeter flavors sounded like a nice mix for the food, especially as I can't have dairy. My rave reviews got the other four to try it, and now we're all super fans of this naan here! I'll see if I can find a good version here in the US to tide me over until next Christmas when we visit again!
For dessert we also all shared the mango cardamom brûlée and the donuts. The donuts were good as always, and the brûlée had nice creaminess and mango flavor, but it needed a lot more of the cardamom as we could hardly taste it, and it would have balanced the sweetness and the heaviness of the dish very well.
Can't wait to return here again and again, and can't wait to check out their new place in downtown Liverpool next year! And next time I'll take photos (who knew their Yelp page was so empty?)!
