So Bonaventure was always on my list to visit, with or without pop culture references (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) or status as a tourist stop. A little bit outside of the city, but not terribly difficult to get to, there is a small parking lot for visitors, with public toilets and maps available. They have tour options, but you can also just walk yourself around. The big gravesite draws (Johnny Mercer, Conrad Aiken) are well marked and fairly easy to find on your own. The place is beautiful and very well maintained. Large cemeteries were often meant as strolling green spaces, meant to be visited and used. But do be aware and conscientious if there appears to be a service going on. I could have spent ages and ages walking every path and taking in the loveliness. Highly recommend a visit here, with enough time to wander and sit and see.

It is also home to the oldest existing structure on the island, the Baynard Mausoleum, which was built in 1846 by William Baynard, a wealthy Plantation owner. The cemetery contains the graves and memorials for four Revolutionary War Patriots: Isaac Baldwin, James Davant, John Stoney, and Charles Davant. Charles Davant was ambushed by a Tory militia unit, was mortally wounded, and is the only known Patriot casualty on the island. It is clearly an old and disused cemetery. Some of the headstones are quite worn and impossible to read. There is a small parking area that is accessible from the Matthews Drive ramp. This is history. They also have a few burial sections for the unknown thru out. The cool thing is you can drive thru most of it, streets are clearly marked. They could do a better job taking care of the grounds. Some of the other well known cemeteries have tours, guides and well take care of... I love going to old cemeteries and wandering around, most of them have so much history. They don't have a office like some of the well known cemeteries with staff. Upon entering the grounds they do have maps and a few thing marked. My advice would be go online and look at a few reviews to get more info if you are looking for something specific. Even the maps need to be redone. Things should be clearly marked, its history. I recommend a visit, review the grounds, maybe things will change in the near future.

We found a peaceful place that could've been better kept. It contained graves that were almost 230 years old! One particular place that carried especially heavy emotions and struck me with an extra heavy weight was the slaves burial place. Many where laid to rest in graves that were either unmarked or had headstones that could barely be read due to the lack of upkeep and time. The feeling of pain and sorrow was thick. We stood there for a long time and honored the many lives lost to the unimaginable horror they experienced at the hands of their "masters." Many of the city's African American clergy were also laid to rest here. It's a strange mix of hope and sadness, but it's definitely a place to go if cemeteries are "your thing."

My father is buried here. I go out there on a regular basis to keep the area clean. I had raked…read moreleaves and swept the markers on Sunday before Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving my brother went there and found that there was a pile of leaves that was blown from around the area on top of Dad's grave. The leaves completely covered the foot marker. He took a picture and reported it. If the workers can't properly dispose of the leaves then they should not do anything. It is bad enough that you have to watch for the potholes in the road to get there. This is completely unacceptable.

This funeral home is terrible. They were hired to service my father's funeral on 1/12/2023. The…read moreonly good thing I can say about them is that they did a good job on my father's body. Everything else was unacceptable. First, after the viewing, they rushed us into our cars to go to the graveside service. Only, we didn't immediately leave. We all waited in our cars for about 10 minutes until two men came out and asked "Where are the pallbearers?!" Ummm...you mean my brother and my partner? No one informed us that we were expected to bring our own pallbearers. We assumed that the $11,000 we were charged for the funeral that would include pallbearers. My brother, partner, and two cousins jumped up and volunteered themselves to help move my father's coffin into the hearse. Then the nightmare continues. They instructed us to follow them and then proceeded to lead us to THREE different random cemeteries before finally arriving at the correct cemetery where my father was to be buried. How do you not know which cemetery your client is to be buried at, leading a grieving family on an impromptu (and unwelcome) tour of cemeteries all over Savannah?! We finally arrived at the (correct) cemetery and noticed that my father's to be grave was at least 200 feet from where we had just parked. One of the two employees remarked "Well if I had known it was this far, I would have brought the rolling cart. Oh well." The "pall bearers" (my brother, carrying his own father's coffin, my partner, and my two cousins) struggled to carry the 250 lbs+ coffin to the grave. The service, thankfully, went without any additional problems. But the ordeal continued the next day when we realized that we had never received our father's death certificate. We called the nursing home that he passed away at and they stated that Adam's Funeral never sent them the certificate to be signed by their physician. We then had our legal representative call Adam's, and they curtly said that they would only speak to the person who paid for the funeral. So my brother and I went to the funeral home ourselves (along with our legal representative). They immediately claimed that they had just faxed the death certificate to the nursing home (of course). I wouldn't recommend anyone trust this funeral in handing one of the most stressful and traumatic experiences of their lives. Stay away.
