Terrible customer service. We were told to wait and then were skipped bc we were waiting in the car with the AC on.

Last year, we rented a convertible from Hertz in Rome and drove up to Piza. On the first night in…read morePiza a quarter window on the car was broken by thieves (car was empty, they stole nothing). We went into Hertz in Piza to switch cars and were told the charge for the broken window would be less than the deductible "about $50 euro" and we were downgraded two tiers to a hatchback that the lady at the counter said would "probably make up for cost of the window." I told her that we were on our honeymoon and would appreciate a better ride (they had a Jaguar in the lot) but she said we would have to pay more for the jag. So we said Ok whatever and drove off in our little hatch. We didn't get any invoices or paperwork about the broken window or the change in price for the downgrade from Hertz Pisa at the time. The experience in the lot and counter was confusing and felt very unprofessional. When we returned the car in Rome, our original ~$300 USD bill was suddenly ~$1100 USD. No invoice, no explanation why it was so expensive. When I refused the sign the credit card authorization the Hertz rep said "It's already done." Uhh, how do you charge my CC without my authorization? So I disputed the difference between what we were told the rental would cost and the mystery charges (~$800 USD). Hertz Italy contacted me by email demanding full payment. I replied demanding an invoice and details about why we were being charged so much for a window that the rep said would cost 50 euro and a downgrade to a hatchback. Hertz never provided any of that information to me. Instead they provided it to debt collectors, which is how I finally got an invoice (via a debt collector). It looks like they charged us $297 euro for the window (conveniently 1% under the insurance deductible), and the hatchback rental jumped from ~$300 USD to ~$500 USD for the week. Toss on some extra charges and fees and boom, $1100 USD. However now we are dealing with debt collectors so of course there are more fees for late payment, and I'm being told I owe ~$1100 USD on top of the $300 USD I already paid. I would have been happy to work with Hertz directly to resolve the matter, my primary beef isn't the $297 euro for the broke window, but being charged more for a downgrade. Instead I'm getting harassed from rude debt collectors who treat me like I'm a criminal. Not cool!

A Costly Mistake - Avoid LOCAUTO at Pisa Airport…read more We had a terrible experience with LOCAUTO (National Car Rental's local partner) at Pisa Airport. When we returned the car, they claimed there were two tiny "dings" -- barely visible even in photos -- and charged us €880 (over $1,000), including so-called admin fees. We refused to sign the damage report, but they told us we had waived any right to dispute the charges under their contract. Since credit card CDW isn't valid in Italy and we didn't purchase their extra coverage, we were fully liable. They even sent written threats about turning us over to a collections agency if we contested the charge. After some research, we discovered many similar complaints, especially involving their Pisa branch. This seems to be part of a larger pattern. We've submitted complaints to: * National Car Rental (we're Emerald Club members) * The European Consumer Centre * Italian consumer protection authorities We've rented in Italy for over 20 years (usually with Avis or Budget) and have never faced anything like this. LOCAUTO's low rates come with high hidden risks. Tip: Don't take the bait. Avoid LOCAUTO -- it's not worth the trouble.

The woman advised they would be closed from 12:30pm-2:30pm for lunch and we there is no key drop box for express return (????) We rushed to get there right at 12:30pm, calling several times to find out where to park the car as there is no parking lot at this location. Nobody answered our five phone calls, and by the time we found parking and went to the office, it was locked with no one inside. We had to wait outside the office for two hours, and the attendants finally returned at 2:35pm. They then insisted we pay an additional $50 euros since we were late. A horrible experience, through and through. We will NEVER rent from this unprofessional and unreliable company again.

Then again, I'm far too miffed to say nothing, so here goes. Goldcar are thieves, plain and simple. I didn't think they were. I thought the majority of negative reviews out there were hyperbolic, or perhaps written by customers who'd just had exceptionally bad luck. I was quite wrong. My girlfriend and I, along with every single other passenger on our flight, were - and I do not use this word lightly - extorted into paying sometimes obscene amounts of money to Goldcar to get cars we had already pre-paid in full. And for every single one of us, Goldcar told a different lie (often contradicting previous lies) that found no support in their terms & conditions or any other form of rational reasoning known to man. During the booking process (about a month before our vacation) I had input my flight details as part of the rental process. According to the rental form, this was to ensure Goldcar would be notified in the event of our flight being delayed. And what luck, because our flight was indeed delayed; by 190 minutes no less! Of course, to be sure we got our car I had also notified Goldcar directly before take-off as soon as we were told about the delay - just in case the flight number wasn't enough. Imagine my surprise, then, when the hysterical, angry Italian creature who "greeted" us at the Pisa International Goldcar counter told us our car had already been rented to someone else, and that we would have to pay to upgrade to a more expensive car if we wanted a rental. I asked him how this was possible - after all I did give them our flight number AND contact them about the delay after all. He simply told us "Not my problem.". When I insisted we get the car we booked, or at least something similar, he said "Okay, then I cancel your booking!" and hand gestured as if tearing the contract apart. I was dumbfounded...only in writing had I heard of people like this. People so wholly committed to being an absolute they appear entirely immune to all logic. You've signed a contract? Doesn't matter! You quote their own terms and conditions? He doesn't care! You try holding him to something he told you not ten seconds earlier? He's already forgotten it. At this point the Italian demon-being behind the counter was quickly becoming so aggressive and threatening it was beginning to worry the other customers. Realizing this wasn't a person that could be reasoned with, I politely informed him I would record the remainder of our conversation, since I would need it for documentation with my travel insurance company (and because I knew what he was doing wasn't exactly legal). This was a YUGE mistake - the Italian man got *very* upset, threw my contract down on the counter and ran out of the room in a huff faster than you can spell linguini. When he returned ten minutes later I'd begun to feel so bad for the twenty people behind me and, realizing this wasn't an argument I could win, thought I might as well just pay the money and get it over with. As I signed the contract, I saw that I wasn't paying for an upgrade at all! In fact I was getting THE EXACT CAR I HAD BOOKED, only with an extra fee added for "GPS rental"! Wonderful, another lie. Not wanting to spend the vacation in jail on manslaughter charges, I rolled my eyes into the back of my skull, swiped my credit card and got on our way. ...but of course it wasn't over yet. You see, Goldcar not only pride themselves on criminally bad customer service, they also pride themselves on dead customers. I can see no other reason why our tires would have such wildly different pressures - the front left about to burst, the rear right nearly flat. Compared to this, the empty wiper fluid and defective GPS unit almost didn't bother me at all. So I pulled into a gas station and filled up the tires. After making sure there wasn't anything else Goldcar was doing to try to kill us, we were finally off to the hotel. In the end, Goldcar lied about nearly everything, made threats and in the end gave us a dangerous car of a lower class than we had paid for with a non-functioning GPS we didn't want but were charged extra for. We got off easy though. Our friends had to pay double their initial rental fee for extra insurance, as the Goldcar demon insisted their Norwegian insurance wasn't valid in Italy. This, of course, was a lie...
